Editor’s note: The Dallas Post is rich in all kinds of history, especially sports history. Each week, the Post will bring you several different highlights from a particular decade. For this week, we chose to highlight the decades ending in “4.”

September 2004

Stacey Stepniak, Dallas, won five medals in the girls 13-14 age group at the 2004 Keystone State Games. She took three gold, one silver and one bronze. Stepniak was also a member of a team representing the Pocono region.

September 1994

Dallas used a heavy dose of defense to upend Hanover, 21-0, to open the 1994 football season. Mountaineer quarterback Ted Jackson threw a touchdown pass to Mike Viglone, while Buddy Rhodes ran for a touchdown.

September 1984

Thanks to Chris Van Gorder’s one-yard touchdown plunge late in the fourth quarter, Lake-Lehman edged Bishop Hoban, 9-6, to open the 1984 football season.

The Black Knights added a two-point safety with two minutes remaining for the final score. Lehman tallied just 58 yards passing and 84 yards rushing, but came out on top.

September 1974

Brian Sickler and Dave Fritzges led the Dallas Mountaineers to a 30-0 win over Towanda to open the 1974 football season.

Sickler threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Fritzges in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Sickler recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. To open the second, Sickler ran 46 yards for a touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Sickler again found Fritzges for a touchdown score.
