DALLAS — The Back Mountain Memorial Library, 96 Huntsville Road, lists the following upcoming events:
Civil War program
The program “Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Civil War” will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:15 p.m. It will examine the complicated nature of the Civil War in the northeastern counties of the commonwealth. Through the use of primary sources, local historian and educator EJ Murphy, of Waverly, will discuss how residents of the area thought, acted, and reported during the Civil War era. Whether you’re a Civil War buff or an interested beginner, come out and view that formative war from a new perspective.
Designer Purse Bingo
Don’t forget to get your tickets for our popular Designer Purse Bingo. In addition to gorgeous bags by designers like Kate Spade and Michael Kors, this year’s prizes will also include five Disney passes. Another fantastic prize, courtesy of Sundance Vacations, is a gift certificate for an 8-day, 7-night stay at either Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head, SC, for up to six people. Tickets are on sale now for the Sunday, Oct. 13 event. Pre-sale price is $20, which includes three cards for each of 20 games. Tickets at the door will be $25. ‘Five Easy Pieces’
The season is changing and if your fall wardrobe is past its prime, come join us for “Five Easy Pieces,” a fashion show featuring the designs of Candyce Fike. Candyce creates unique and comfortable clothing in gorgeous fabrics found in her travels. In addition, a framed print of a landscape painting by local artist Elizabeth S. Fulton, on display here in the library, will be raffled off. Chances are $5 each for “Wheat Fields,” done in calming shades of gold, green, and blue. You do not need to be present to win. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a cash bar. The show is being held Sunday, Oct. 20, at Appletree Terrace, Newberry Estates, starting at 2 p.m. Tickets are now available at the library and cost $20 per person. Be aware deadline for tickets is Friday, Oct. 11. All proceeds from this event will benefit the library.
Halloween Story Hours
The Children’s Room is planning a spooky good time with its “Halloween Story Hours” on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Youngsters can dress up in their costumes and hear Halloween-themed stories, then create a craft and experience other fun activities of the season. Children 2 ½ to 4 years old can sign up for the session from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and those ages 5 to 7 will meet from 6:15 to 7 p.m. The Misericordia University cheerleaders are presenting these safe, not-too-scary story hours.
News and notices
If you love working outdoors to create lovely, thriving landscapes, please consider volunteering for the newly-formed Library Gardening Guard. We’re looking for people willing to give the library flower beds care on a regular basis, planting annuals and bulbs, and weeding as necessary. A small commitment of your time can make a big difference. The library will give a budget for the plants and bulbs; you provide the creativity! The premiere meeting is Thursday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. Put your gardening skills to work and beautify the library grounds.
Time is getting short to visit the farmers market. The last day is Oct. 12 to get the freshest and most delicious produce in the area. Your favorite vendors are set up at the Dallas High School parking lot on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Locally-grown fruits, vegetables, baked goods, honey, jams, herbs, and even mushrooms, are available for purchase. The market benefits the Back Mountain Memorial Library.
