DALLAS TWP. — Recipes can show a lot about an area, including the population’s tastes, availability of certain foods and a glimpse into how families celebrate special occasions.

As the Dallas Township Bicentennial Committee planmed its year-long celebration, the thought of collecting recipes from residents to create a cookbook fit in perfectly to reflect on the region’s history, said Township Supervisor and assistant secretary Elizabeth Martin.

“We are opening it up to families from the Back Mountain, new families, old families to share recipes from Grandma’s cookies or something like that,” she said. “To make this even more special, we would like to include a photograph of say the person they got the recipe from celebrating with family and, of course, we would give credit to the family in the book.”

Recipes may be emailed to Martin at [email protected] or dropped off between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the Dallas Township Municipal building at 2919 Route 309, Dallas. Martin will scan the photos and return the original to the family.

“Photos need to be a high resolution for publication,” she said.

The recipe collection drive began last week and will continue through April 15, Martin said.

“I have a few so far, but we would welcome more,” she said, noting other cookbooks done as fundraisers have at least 100 pages.

“It has to be worth printing,” Martin said.

The Bicentennial Committee has a variety of events and programs planned to celebrate the township’s 200th anniversary.

Martin said the celebration kick-off begins with the Gold Shield Gala on April 7 which will honor Back Mountain law enforcement officers.

“That (Gold Shield Gala) is actually the day of the township’s founding, April 7,” she said.

Tickets are $60 per person and may be purchased at the Dallas Township Municipal Building or from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Monday to Friday at the Kingston Township Municipal Building, 180 E. Center St., Shavertown.

Other events include, but are not limited to:

• Dallas Days History and Art Display in May at the Back Mountain Regional EMA building on Route 118 in Lehman Township;

• Dallas Days Car, Dallas Days Truck & Motorcycle Show plus an Ice Cream Social in June at the Dallas School District, Conyngham Ave, Dallas Township;

• Dallas Days Community Movie Nights throughout June and August at the Dallas High School;

• Dallas Days Firemen’s Bazaar and Fireworks display in July at the Luzerne County Fairgrounds, Route 118, Lehman Township;

• Dallas Harvest Fest in September at the Dallas School District;

• Dallas Days Pumpkin Decorating contest in October;

A flyer with a complete listing of bicentennial festivities is tentatively scheduled to be completed by the end of March, Martin said.
