Alicia Roncevich, Tara Puffenberger and Peter Recchia played reindeer in the annual Christmas play presented Sunday by the gate of heaven School kindergarten class.
Third graders at Westmorland Elementary School presented their annual holiday show last week. The students performed a play, “Santa and His Snowmobile,” demonstrated traditions of Hannukah and sang choral selections. Some of the participants were Daniel Kinley, Katie Dompkosky, Jessica Jenkins, Hilary Smith, Shannon Dingle, Ian VanKuyk, Kyle Lewis, Kaitlin Stark, Celia Pambianco, Heather Mines, Amanda Fleig, Rachel Gallup, Max Winter, Brittany Sayre, David Judge, Mario Olivieri and Amanda Kretchmer.
30 years ago – 1986
Nine members of the Dallas Hockey team were presented with special awards for their outstanding play during the season at their recent banquet. They are: Lindsey Krivenko, Maureen Wisnieski, Renee Balberchak, Lori Warneka, Joyce Tinner, Eileen Walsh, Shaunna Griffin, Tracey Hunter and Renee Strauser.
Members of the Shavertown Branch of the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital Auxiliary held their annual Christmas party last Friday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown. Some of the attendees were: Ann Vaskas, Ruth Shotwell, Pearl Purvin, Esther Armitage, Almenia Evans, Eleanor Edwards, Jean Emanuel, Jessie Beckerman, Hazel Fielding, Evelyn Shales, Ruth Shortz, Ruby Elston, Inez Hummel, Bertha King and Evelyn Daley.
The Meadows Nursing Center Auxiliary recently hosted a festive tree trimming party for residents at the center in Dallas. Residents, volunteers, family members and staff joined in singing carols, followed by holiday refreshments. Auxiliary members include Sarah Williams, Alice Nordfors, Theta Dickson, Helen Parsons and Ann Hall.
40 years ago – 1976
A unique store will make its debut and closing Saturday, December 11 as the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club sponsors its “Christmas Store” at Gate of Heaven. The store is unique because only youngsters will be permitted to shop. The children will be escorted by Girl Scouts who have volunteered to help. Marlene Rollman, project chairman, is aided by Carmella Thomas, co-chairperson, Gloria Miller and Karen Shelly.
Tad Radzinski, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Radzinski, West Center Hill Road, Dallas, shot his first buck this week while hunting with his father at Vosburg, near Tunkhannock. Tad, a student at Dallas Junior High School, brought down a 150-pound eight pointer.
Edwin Davis and William Powell, officials of Burger King, announced Tuesday that ground has been broken for the new Burger King to be built on the former Shavertown Elementary School property. In a joint statement, they stated that they hoped to have this new business completed in the spring but that it depends on the weather conditions.
50 years ago – 1966
John L. Krogulski, N. Lehigh Street, Shavertown, has been promoted to Division Plant Manager – North of Commonwealth Telephone Company as announced by Granville Miller, General Plant Manager of the Company. Krogulski began his telephone career as a cable splicer in 1948.
The Dallas Senior High School Band, under the direction of Lester R. Lewis, and chorus directed by Mrs. Robert F. Sherwood will present a Christmas program Sunday in the Senior high School auditorium. Organists will be Ruth Higgins, Thomas Myers and Diane Davies. Accompanists for the chorus will be Frank Juarbe, Joan Nelson, Beth Sheehan, Michael Evans, Thomas Earl, Janet Balshaw, Patti Larson, Claudia Zaboski, Ruth Higgins and Dorothy Philo.
Harmony Club met recently at the home of Mrs. Alice Austin, Shavertown. Games were played and prizes won by Mrs. Emma Hoover and Mrs. Florence Carle.
60 years ago – 1956
Striking for the second time in seven years, thieves stole $1,500 worth of diamonds early Monday morning from Henry’s Jewelry Store, Main Street, Dallas. Following the same tactics as their predecessor, who was later apprehended, the robbers hurled a chunk of concrete through the big plate glass window and then snatched nine boxes containing matched engagement rings and wedding bands. They also took a diamond solitaire and tow keepsake wedding rings.
Joyce Oliver, Beth Weiss, Donna Weeden, Susan Lawry and Phyliss Pope were accepted as new members of the Dal King Jr. Tri-Hi-Y at the recent meeting held at the Y.M.C.A. building in Shavertown.
Members of Beaumont Seven Day Adventist Church sang Christmas carols on Dallas streets Sunday night and expect to continue their Christmas music throughout the Back Mountain area until Christmas Day. Among those taking part are George Sayre, Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Sayre, Mr. and Mrs. Alden Deets and Arthur Kibler.
70 years ago – 1946
Dr. and Mrs. S.R. Schooley entertained at a dinner party at Irem Country Club Saturday evening before the Woman’s Club dance. Attendees were: Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Steelman, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Ide, Mr. and Mrs. Frank LeGrand, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Smith.
Through a previous arrangement, the Department of Forests and Waters acquired last week and additional 5,600 acres of mountain land at Ricketts Glen. Negotiations for this purchase have been underway for several months. A check of approximately $50,000 was delivered to the Ricketts heirs when the deed was made of record.
