TUNKHANNOCK — Ben Robinson and Samantha Snead ran to victories in the Jack Daniels Mile on Thursday night in the race that kicks off the the annual big bazaar — the Triton Hose Company Carnival in Tunkhannock.

Robinson, 24, of Tunkhannock, crossed the finish line in four minutes, 22 seconds, scoring a six-second win over second-place finisher, Addison Monroe, 29, of Lewistown.

“I went out hard right from the start,” said Robinson, who ran cross country and track collegiately for High Point in North Carolina and Lock Haven. “Then I tried to go for (the record). But I didn’t have enough. I trained all last summer in the mountains, in Colorado, getting ready for an ultra marathon that I’ll be running in four weeks in Chamonix, France.”

Training in the mountains but not doing a lot of speed work may have cost him that record, which he missed by just two seconds. The mark is held by University of Notre Dame standout Hugh Mundy.

Like Robinson, Monroe also ran cross country and track at Lock Haven. competing there for three years and for one at Eastern Kentucky.

For the women, Snead’s win in 5:36 was her first in two attempts in the 1-miler. The 29-year-old from Dickson City outran second-place finisher Eryn Milius, 33, of Dallas, by 12 seconds.

“I moved in front after the second turn (just after the half-mile marker),” said Snead, who ran for Penn State Scranton.

“After taking the lead, I just tried to hold on — my heart isn’t used to sprinting,” she said with a smile.

Marina Martino holds the female course record, 4:58, set under her maiden name, Orrson. Mundy holds the male course record of 4:20. Laurel Park holds the female masters record at 5:17 while John Serrao holds the male masters record at 4:24.
