The gaudy offensive numbers produced during the regular season allowed Lake-Lehman juniors Cassandra Konopki and Chloe VanGorder to gain recognition on the Pennsylvania High School Softball Association all-state teams without the Black Knights advancing into state tournament play.
Konopki was named as a first-team infielder and VanGorder a second-team outfielder in Class 3A.
Sophomores Jena Simmons and Hope Jones from state finalist Tunkhannock each made the first team in Class 4A.
Konopki averaged one extra-base hit and nearly two RBI per game while leading Lake-Lehman to its first winning season since 2012. She hit .551 with eight doubles, a triple, six homers and 28 RBI while scoring 14 times.
VanGorder batted .630 with 10 doubles, two triples, two homers, 17 RBI and 16 runs.
Simmons, an infielder, led the team in homers (six) and RBI (28) while batting .320. She also had seven doubles and a triple while scoring 24 times.
Jones was selected as a flex player after splitting time between pitcher and playing in the field. She was 11-3 with 82 strikeouts and a 1.64 earned run average in 85 innings. She batted .315 and shared the team lead in runs scored with twin sister Faith with 27 each.
BASEBALL
Two players each from Dallas and Tunkhannock, along with one from Lake-Lehman, were part of the West team that had a 3-0 lead when the Wyoming Valley Conference Senior Baseball All-Star Game was halted in the second inning July 20.
The game was rained out and will not be completed.
Dallas graduates J.D. Barrett, who scored, and Christo Huntington each walked in their only plate appearances.
Tunkhannock’s Brian Muckin drove in a run during the three-run top of the first on a fielder’s choice, then made a diving catch in center field in the bottom of the inning. Teammate Connor Hulslander was preparing to pitch the bottom of the second when the game was stopped.
Lake-Lehman’s Mike Sikora grounded out to end the first.
