20 YEARS AGO —1997
Music from Sister Act was on the list during last weekend’s bazaar at Gate of Heaven Church in Dallas Borough. Choir members who donned habits for the skit were Marcie Brennan, Diane McAnney, Marilyn O’Connell, Mary Lou Stahovec, Marcia Matthews and Erin Allardyce.
The talented trio of Kelly Wallick, Kristy Hritzak and Erica Swatko recently attended the Eastern Performing Arts Dance Competition held at the Mountain Laurel Resort in White Haven. They received first place in the Trio Pantomime, Novelty and Open categories. They also won the Junior Champion Duo/Trio Award (highest score in the age division).
At an awards program held recently at the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School, Lehman, the Michael S. Gruen Citizenship Award was presented to Amy Hartman, daughter of David and Donna Hartman, Dallas. Hartman was selected by teachers and students on the basis of those qualities which best exemplify a good citizen – academics, dependability, honesty, co-operation, respect and leadership.
30 YEARS AGO — 1987
A popular meeting place for young adults of the Back Mountain and Wyoming Valley will celebrate its closing this weekend with a Gala Fourth of July party. The Hearthstone Pub, located on Main Street, opened its doors in January, 1976, under the ownership of Ron Post and Dick Chaney and has been the center of attraction for those who came to listen or dance to many of their favorite bands or groups and renew friendships with former school pals. In recent months, however, Post and Chaney became increasingly aware that liability and management expenses were making it impossible to operate the Pub at a good profit.
Kevin McGovern, 8, of Trucksville, and Brian Ginocchetti, 10, of Trucksville, were among a group of local children who had their bicycle brakes tested in the parking lot of Gate of Heaven School recently. State Police and AAA representatives were on hand to issue safety stickers and to register bikes.
40 YEARS AGO — 1977
The Dallas Women of Rotary met recently at the home of Mrs. John Barney for a covered dish supper. Five members, with 25 years of service or more, were honored and received gifts marking the occasion. Honorees were: Mrs. Harold Titman, 33 years; Mrs. Francis Ambrose, 28 years; Mrs. Dale Parry, 28 years; Mrs. John Landis, 27 years; and Mrs. Lester Jordan, 25 years.
Lake-Lehman Junior High School students learned to use the pottery wheel in Richard Derby’s art class and each student made his own piece of pottery. Participating were Vince Narsh, Doug Osborne, Brett Perrego and Leonard Oley.
50 YEARS AGO— 1967
Deborah Ann Savickas, Dallas Area School, and Sheldon Ehret, Lake-Lehman School, received book scholarships from the Dallas Rotary Club. Deborah Ann, a National Honor Society Student, will further her education at the University of Texas and is interested in working in the National Aeronautics Space Administration. Sheldon, a member of District and State Band Festivals and winner of the John Philip Sousa Band Award, will study at Penn State University with interest in a music career. Each received a hundred dollars.
Two Shavertown young men were spared serious injury miraculously when their car skidded off the Luzerne Dallas Highway Friday morning at 7:30, turned over several times and toppled into Toby’s Creek. John F. Butler, Jr. and Paul Campbell were on their way to summer classes when the mishap occurred. Butler, who was driving, was thrown into the creek and was saved from drowning by his passenger companion when Campbell pulled him from the water and onto the bank.
The American Legion School Award presented by Daddow Isaacs Post 667, Dallas, for the outstanding boy and girl in the 8th grade of Dallas Junior High School, was awarded to Bruce M. Goeringer and Glenda S. Larson last month. The American Legion School Award is designed to give recognition through the award of American Legion Medals to the boy and girl who are deemed most worthy of the high qualities of leadership, scholarship, honor, courage and service.
60 YEARS AGO — 1957
Auctioneers for the Eleventh Annual Library Auction decided that, crowd or no crowd, auctioning will start at 11 a.m. both Friday and Saturday and that many good items will go at that time. Robert Bachman, chairman of the auctioneers, assigned half hour shifts to keep the sale moving at a fast pace and give relief to auctioneers who have never assumed the entire burden before. Auctioneers are: Norti Berti, James Hutchison, Neville Shea, Rev. Russell Lawry, Charles Frantz, Charles Poad, James Huston, Jr., Tommy Andrew, Robert Laux, Enoch Thomas, Judge Harold Flannery, Sherman Harter and Ralph Sands.
Mrs. Homer Middleton of Lehman Heights presented the following pupils in a piano recital, with a party following, Saturday afternoon: Janet Spencer, Charles Vanderhoff, Joyce Ide, Orville Ide, Elizabeth Ann Shaver, George Major, Shirley Disque, Linda Calkins, Richard Maye, Carol Ann Lamoreaux, Beverly Moyer, Cindy Disque, Tommy Shouldice, Robert Shouldice, Geraldine Goodman, Althea Disque and Judith Steele.
70 Years Ago — 1947
Herman and Ralph Sands, outstanding Carverton Holstein fanciers, have returned from Ontario, Canada where they purchased a carload of fifteen registered dairy cattle. During May the Sands dispersed their herd and are now rebuilding around new foundation stock.
Mrs. Walter Heidere was hostess to members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Auxiliary at their twenty-second anniversary covered dish dinner Wednesday afternoon. A hobby sale was enjoyed.
