20 YEARS AGO — 1977
Dallas High School seniors Lori Buzin, of Shavertown, and Heather Wilt, of Wyoming, were recently awarded Book Scholarships of $350 each by the Dallas Area Federated Women’s Club. The annual club scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement and need.
Melanie Yakus recently achieved the honor of making All-State Band where she performed along with the State Orchestra and State Chorus at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. Under the direction of Edward A. Richards, Melanie was a member of the Lake-Lehman Band for six years, principle clarinetist, soloist and section leader for the past two years, and is serving as the band’s president for the 1996-1997 school years.
Seven young people were received into membership at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Dallas through confirmation of faith. Confirmed were: Matt Hoover, Jeannie Dreier, Tyler Morgan, Rob Roderick, Richard Bonin, Chris Riley and Jacob Swartwood.
30 YEARS AGO —1987
Members of Brownie Troop 637, Dallas Elementary School, held their Fly-Up and Court of Awards Ceremony last month directed by leader Melanie Williams and assistant Linda Laity. Girls taking part in the fly-up were Megan Elston, Melody Sarti, Hope Eaton, Allison Cutter, Jennifer Russ, Gwen Zaremo, Aileen Williams, Jacquie Prothero, Kelly Killeen, Sarah Wysocki, Samantha Browne, Jennifer Bozunis, Lori Buzin, Joey Lynn Walko, Gail Culver, Stephanie Jancewicz, Jessica Elston, Tracy Patton, Vivian Riley and Jaime Elston.
Two new members were recently inducted into the Dallas Kiwanis Club. Leo Corbett, Past Lt. Governor of Division 15 and member of the Dallas Kiwanis Club, handled the induction ceremonies. New members and their sponsors are: John Gouse sponsored by Tex Wilson and Bill Nicoll sponsored by Cliff Parker.
Carolynn Edwards, daughter of Ronald and Carole Edwards of Harveys Lake, recently won second place runner-up for Miss Photogenic in the Northern Pennsylvania Hemisphere Beauty Pageant held at Holiday Inn, Wilkes-Barre. Carolynn, 4 years old, a student of ballet and tap at the Joan Harris Dance Studio.
40 YEARS AGO — 1977
The Dallas Senior Women’s Club recently presented cash awards to the winners of the art contest held for the students of Dallas Junior High School. First-place winners were Jeff Barbose, seventh grade; Brenda Beckerman, eighth grade; and Karen Thompson, ninth grade.
Mike Gennetts, Lake-Lehman High School senior, brought back a state title in the javelin event this spring. Gennetts’ throw of 213’10” was the longest throw in the state competition at Shippensburg, surpassing the Division AAA competition. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gennetts, of Loyalville.
50 YEARS AGO — 1967
Miss Georgeann Nash, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nash, Dallas, was crowned queen of the Dallas Junior Prom held recently in the Dallas Senior High School Gymnasium. She was escorted by Chester Kyle. The theme for the affair was Tropical Paradise with Barbara Hughes as chairman of decorations.
John Pickett, a sophomore at Dallas High School, has joined the Sebaco Canoe Club of New York City to further his training of Olympic Flat Water Kayak Racing. The young enthusiast is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pickett, Dallas, and has been interested in down river racing for the past two years. He goes to New York each weekend to train under the direction and supervision of expert coaches.
60 YEARS AGO — 1957
Sixty-one members and guests of Lehman-Jackson Ross Educators’ Association met at Irem Temple Country Club last week to honor Mrs. Ella Lewis, who is retiring after 35 years of service. Mrs. Lewis, a faculty member at Lehman for fourteen years, has taught under two supervising principals, Howard Hendricks and Lester Squier. During these years, because of her broad certification, she has taught various subjects including geography, science, mathematics and social studies.
Couples Club of Idetown Methodist Church will conduct an auction Saturday at 2 at Idetown Corners. Robert Wilson is chairman with all members of the club assisting. Some of the items to be auctioned include barbecue grills, casseroles, planters, dishes, glasses, Venetian blinds, suitcases, electric clocks, salad sets, auto polishes, cleaners, oils, television tables, new dresses, blouses, wearing apparel, stereoscopes and slides, shrubbery, flowers, lamps, cutlery, perfumes, toilet articles, kitchen appliances, games, toys and pillows.
70 YEARS AGO — 1947
A mere matter of seventy years is bringing to a close the public career of Ralph Rood, connected for many years with Dallas Borough Schools and for other years with the local bank. Mr. Rood, now teaching at the High School faces compulsory resignation with the close of this school year because he will pass the allowed seventy years this summer.
Leading their class of forty-one seniors at the thirty-seventh annual Commencement of Lehman High School on Tuesday night were five seniors: Betty Rebennack, who led the Academic Department with a straight A average; Gerald Hoover, who led the Commercial Department; Margaret Sholtis, who had the highest average in the Home Economics Department; Kenneth Hunter, who received the Charles H. Long award for all-around general development and leadership; and John Nulton, who led the General Department.
The bake sale conducted Saturday at Oliver’s showroom by Dallas Borough Parent-Teacher Association netted $115.20, enough to make the final payment on the school’s new motion picture projector and leave a balance on hand. Mrs. J.G. Sheehan, chairman, and Mrs. Irwin Coolbaugh, co-chairman, wish to thank all who assisted in any way to make the sale a success.
