20 YEARS AGO – 1997
Cub Pack #155 of Trucksville recently held their Pinewood Derby Races. Winners are: 1st place – John Considine; 2nd place – Dan Retzena; 3rd place – Brian Parrish; and 4th place – David Judge.
Boy Scout Troop 232 recently entertained the resident sisters of Mercy Nursing Unit with holiday songs. The troop also presented the Sisters of Mercy with handmade angel ornaments. Troop members participating in the project are: Nick Joseph, Matt Flanagan, Brent Mayernick, Tom Dougal, Joe Latosek, Rich Dougal, Rob Neher, Tim Flanagan and Paul Dougal.
Shannon Leary scored her 500th point last week at home against Regis Academy. Shannon is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leary of Dallas. She is an honor student at Gate of Heaven School.
30 YEARS AGO – 1987
The election of officers for 1987 was recently held by Dallas Fire and Ambulance Inc. The following will serve as officers of the organization: President, Robert Richardson; Vice-President, Timothy Carroll; Secretary, Lynn Sheehan; Treasurer, Paul LaBar. Directors: Don Shaffer, Don Bulford, Edwin Roth, William Baker and Brett Slocum.
An Investiture Ceremony for Daisy Girl Scouts was held recently at the Dallas Township Elementary School. Daisies participating in the ceremony were Patricia Smith, Danielle Jones, Allison Kehler, Alycia Roberts, Laura Brody, Lacey Popson, Rebecca Marcy and Jenelle Kerr.
40 YEARS AGO – 1977
In recent student elections at Wyoming Seminary, Sara Slaff and Charles Umphred, both of Dallas, were chosen as sophomore class president and junior class representative, respectively.
Dallas Women of Kiwanis conducted their installation of officers for 1977 at Irem Temple Country Club. Mrs. Walter Roberts, immediate past president, was in charge of the installation program. Each new officer was charged with her duties and presented with a blue and gold corsage. Mrs. Walter Kozemchak was installed as president.
Howard Grossman of New Goss Manor, Dallas, will be a guest lecturer at College Misericordia this semester for a special course in “state and local government” according to a report from the college. Grossman is the executive Director of the Northeast Pennsylvania Economic development Council. The course is being offered as a part of a special series of “mini-courses” scheduled to begin at the college this month.
50 YEARS AGO – 1967
Carol Pasquini, French horn, and William Steckiel, clarinet, will play with the District PMEA Band this month at Coughlin High School. The two were among five seniors at Dallas High School who tried out for the band.
James Davis was appointed assistant chief of police at a meeting of Dallas Council Tuesday evening.
Members of the Dallas Rotary Club are finishing up the final preparations for their traditional annual community service turkey dinner, to be held this Saturday at the Dallas Senior High School. Making the final preparations are Red Ambrose, Jack Stanley, Jack Landis and Rolly Koeb.
60 YEARS AGO – 1957
Tanya Kocher, senior at Lake-Noxen High School, is in the running for State Homemaker of Tomorrow, having passed with the highest score in her Home-Making course. The Betty Crocker Contest is an annual affair sponsored by General Mills. Winner of school awards are eligible to enter the state contest, and the state contest winner is automatically in the running for the national title.
Hamilton George Clemow was elected senior of the month by members of the senior class at Dallas-Franklin-Monroe Township High School, to be recognized by Dallas Rotary Club at a dinner meeting. Clemow, popularly known as “Porky,” son of Mr. and Mrs. Afton Reese, Dallas, is a member of the National Honor Society. He is vice president of his class in junior and senior years; Key Club secretary; delegate to Key Club convention in reading during junior year.
On Thursday and Friday, students at Dallas-Franklin-Monroe High School participated in the oratorical contest sponsored by the American Legion. The subject was “The Constitution.” Winner of the contest was Joyce Sweppenheiser, a sophomore.
70 YEARS AGO – 1947
Troop 281 Dallas Boy Scouts is making progress under the leadership of Z.E. Garinger, scoutmaster, and Elmer Hunt, assistant scoutmaster. The group of enthusiastic youngsters who are now members is composed of Robert Snyder, Harold Sowden, Roland Gavenas, George Schooley, Wayne Knecht, David Kunkle, Jerry Machell, Nelson Garinger, Thomas Kingston, James Gansel, David Evans, Robert Bodycomb, William Berti, Russell Honeywell, Russell DeRemer, Carl B. Bailey, Edward Van Horn, George Drake, Robert Stair, Lee White, and William Wolfe.
Among the eighteen senior students elected to the Wyoming Valley Chapter Cum Laude Society at Wyoming Seminary last week were four Back Mountain boys and girls. They are Lois Warriner, Benjamin Marshall, Granville Sowden, and Nancy Heffernan. The Cum Laude Society, a national society based on high scholarship, requires that members be in the first ten per cent of their class and have an average of 88 per cent or better.
