20 years ago – 1996

Four freshmen instrumentalists were recently chosen to represent the Lake-Lehman Band at the annual Marywood College Junior High Honors Band for Northeast Pa. They are Jeremy Yakus, Ryan Mariner, Bill Metzger and Amanda Estus.

Recently, an assembly was held at the Dallas Middle School to honor the outstanding academic students for the first marking period. Anthony Martinelli, principal, announced that 20 students had earned award certificates for having achieved Honors with Distinction (3.8 to 4.0 average with no D or F grades). Eighth grade winners were Leanne Piasta, Melonie Sappe, Amanda Young. Seventh grade was represented by Herbert Bressler, Michael Choe, Brian Downey, Elizabeth Eby, Laura Fauerbach, Helene Jayne, Jeffrey Jumper, Erica Koehl, Ryan Morgan, Philip Pack, Brandon Pall, Laura Vodzak. Sixth grade students were Christian Cobleigh, Gabrielle Huh, Samantha Lloyd, Amy Pack and Chen Yang.

30 years ago – 1986

The Trucksville Volunteer Fire Company recently held election of officers for 1987. Elected to positions were: Richard Adamchick, president; Bill Sarley, vice-president; Mark Metzo, recording secretary; Chuck Woolbert, treasurer; Bill Eck, fire chief; Jerry Kapral, first assistant; Brian Johnson, second assistant; and Bill Sarley, third assistant.

Gate of Heaven School presented its annual Christmas Pageant featuring a Christmas Operetta, The Stockings were Hung. A marvelous cast told the cute story about a little mouse and Santa’s Elf, who are looking over all the toys Santa will be bringing a family for Christmas. The play was directed by Diane Wojciechowski and Sister Gracia.

Mary Gulitus of Harveys Lake and Barbara Kasper of Sweet Valley graduated from Pringle Vo Tech School recently. Both are now licensed in their field and will continue to share their knowledge and friendly smiles to their patients.

40 years ago – 1976

Commonwealth Telephone Company’s Employee Christmas project took place this week as volunteers at the company’s headquarters office spent their Sunday afternoon packing 100 Christmas stockings and assorted packages that were delivered throughout the area. Participants included Tony Botyrius, project chairman, Tanya Kocher, Bernie Stephens and Suzanne Gutch.

Members of Lake-Lehman High School’s debate team recently captured second place in the model supreme court debate competition held at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. Team members are Ed Mark, Ann Marie Mark and John Ziminski.

Elementary students at Dallas Borough gave a well appreciated Christmas gift of food to pets at the S.P.C.A. Some of the students who participated in the pet food collection were: Amy Herbert, Shawn Ruth, Richard Niski, Colleen Jordan, Ryan Holthaus, Pam Bevan and Kelly Saba.

50 years ago – 1966

The Franklin Tea House, Shavertown, was the recent scene of the Christmas Party which members of the Dorcas Society of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church herald the Christmas season with. Tables were gaily decorated, and the falling snow added to the holiday spirit. Mrs. Duncan Whitebread, President of Dorcas, offered the prayer before the banquet and afterwards read some appropriate reflections on Christmas.

The Back Mountain Hammond Organ Society held its annual Christmas Dinner Party at the Spa, Wilkes-Barre Friday evening. After dinner, guests entertained at the organ. A delightful program was presented, including solos by Sylvia Schooley and Dana Dungey. Virginia Swanson presented a reading.

60 years ago – 1956

Girl Scouts of Troop 147 held a combined investiture and Brownie fly-up ceremony Tuesday night at St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown. Twelve Brownies received their fly-up wings from Troop Leader Mrs. Vincent Makar: Lorraine Bednar, Helen Cummings, Alice Ann Dorasky, Mary Lou Hoover, Charlotte Dorrance, Suzanne Irwin, Carol Ann Makravitz, Carol Ann Pavlick, Janice Rondinella, Patricia Rottier, Marie Stolarick and Eva Sue Szela.

A new chain letter craze has hit the Back Mountain area just at the advent of the Christmas season. It is not an appeal for money or for charity but an appeal for sanity. Sanity in driving. The letter, apparently started in Trucksville, asks the recipients to write three other letters to friends in the Back Mountain area asking them to drive safely, to be courteous on the highways and to drive soberly, especially during the holidays.

Phillip “Butch” Shannon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Shannon, Harveys Lake RD, was one of the most successful hunters during the season just closed. Although only fourteen years of age, he bagged three ringneck pheasants, one grouse, six rabbits and nine grey squirrels. On the second day of the turkey season, he shot a fourteen-pound turkey which he will enjoy for Christmas dinner.

70 years ago – 1946

Silver Leaf Club of Kunkle held its annual Christmas Party Tuesday evening at the Hotel Prince, Tunkhannock. Christmas carols were sung and gifts exchanged. Attendees included Nell Ellsworth, Lillian Kunkle, Ella Brace, Alberta Brace, Arleen Updyke, Dorothy Dodson, Grace Ide, Naoma Ashburner, Sarah Williams, Florence Klimek, Emma Miller, Marie Rydd, Vera Wertman, Myrtle Hess and Edith Weaver.

Three troops of Dallas Girl Scouts held a Christmas Party in Dallas Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon. An enjoyable time was had singing Christmas carols. Some of the attendees were: Catherine Lavelle, Shirley Ferry, Barbara Williams, Mary Evans, Monica Sebolka, Mildred Kingston, Anna Mae Shaver, Jean DeRemer, Betty Jackson, Ann Booth, Rose Ann Pavlick, Nancy Carey, Joan Oliver, Frances Siley, Naomi Beech, Marilyn Harris, Dorothy Bellas and Katherine Noone.

Robert Layton, twenty-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Roushey of Heller’s Grove, Trucksville, has been chosen one of thirty winners in Berthold Studio’s search for “The Cutest Baby of 1946.” Over 800 babies were entered in the contest.
