20 years ago – 1996

The Showin’ Blue 4-H Club of Borrowdale Acres in Dallas, recently held a non-perishable food drive for the Food Bank in Trucksville. Six cartons of food were collected by the members and delivered before Thanksgiving. Participants included Amanda Adamitz, Megan Ross, Jamie Laubenstein, Chelsea Andrews, Charity Andrews and Wendy Wallo.

A group of Dallas High School alumni – most from the class of 1991 – got together Saturday afternoon for an annual touch football contest. Participants included Mark Herstek, Brian Fett, William Jones, Mike Moses, Mike Tomaine, Carl Jones, Emery Yurko, Paul Deeble, Kevin Barnes, Jay Straigis, Mike Durkin, Chris Rogers, Kevin Rogers and Ryan Dauksis.

30 years ago – 1986

Insalaco’s Enterprises held the grand opening of its new supermarket at the new Country Club Shopping Center in Dallas on Sunday. The supermarket, ninth store of the Insalaco Enterprises, features everything from a floral department to a special display of large stuffed animals. Lydia German and her husband, Carl, of Dallas were among the first shoppers. Both expressed their pleasure with the store, especially the meat department.

The Lake-Lehman High School Band Sponsors will hold their annual banquet on Sunday at Convention Hall in Plains Township. The seniors will be presented with jackets and the sophomores will receive letters as their recognition for being part of the “Award Winning Band.” Several band members to be honored are: Trena Cigarski, Michelle Phares, Tanya Fostock, Julie Folmar, Lynn Gabel, Albert Cigarski, Mike Lubinski and Phillips Stark.

40 years ago – 1976

Members of the Lake-Lehman Senior Class, under the direction of Robert Reese, presented three short one-act plays in the high school auditorium last Friday. “The Makeup Artist” was directed by Senior Lisa Kosakowski and featured student actors Bob Cumens and Eileen Connolly. “Mr. Winkler’s Birthday Party” was directed by student Sandy Mrochko and featured student actors Gerald Naugle, Ed Mark, Bob Walsh, Desiree Knorr and Debbie Palmer. “The Lottery” was directed by Senior Cindy Ide and featured 13 student actors.

Five new members were initiated by Dallas Women of Kiwanis at their meeting at the Country Club last week. New members are: Mrs. Marie Wise, Mrs. Joan Grimms, Mrs. Marion Harvey, Mrs. Joan Pillets and Mrs. Theo Billinge.

50 years ago – 1996

Dallas Woman’s Club Chorale, long a feature of the holiday season, recently gathered at the Back Mountain Memorial Library Annex to rehearse for its singing engagements. Members are: Mrs. William Carroll, director, Mrs. Robert Besecker, Mrs. John Brown, Mrs. Willis Hapeman, Mrs. Leon Brokenshire, Mrs. William Walp, Mrs. Joseph Katyl, Mrs. Charles Mahler, Mrs. Robert Kirchner, Mrs. John McGoey, Mrs. Victor Cross, Mrs. Leo Mohen, Mrs. Albert turner, Mrs. Joseph Kaminski and Mrs. Ralph Carey, accompanist.

Women of Kiwanis assembled baskets of cheer last Tuesday in the Carl Goeringer Recreation Room, for holiday distribution. Each basket contained a complete Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, cranberry sauce and the works. Participants included Mrs. John Marsh, Mrs. Don Anthony, Mrs. Carl Goeringer, Mrs. James Huston Sr., Mrs. Harry Lefko, Mrs. Thomas Kreidler and Mrs. Robert Maturi.

Howard Whitesell, one of the founders of Whitesell Brothers, building contractors and suppliers of Dallas, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the growth and success of the Home Builders Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania at the annual dinner-dance of the Auxiliary of the Home Builders Association.

60 years ago – 1956

Thirty-five members of the Westmoreland High School football team, eight cheerleaders and three managers will be honored Saturday evening at the school’s annual football banquet in the school cafeteria. Guest speaker is Harold Pugh, former Kingston High School football coach and official of the Central Board of PIAA. Football players who will receive jackets are: Allan Williams, Ray Dymond, Richard Bodycomb, Fred Anderson, Thomas Cole, Burt Berrettini and Merton Coolbaugh.

Three Back Mountain members were elected to the directorate of the newly organized Wilkes-Barre Ballet Theatre Guild at Tuesday evening’s meeting in the Adams room of Hotel Sterling. Elected for a one-year term of office were Mrs. Paul Gross, Mrs. Joseph MacVeigh and Mrs. T.M.B. Hicks.

Beth Weaver and George Williams were crowned by Fred Anderson as Hopeful Mud and Tiny Yokum, respectively, at the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance held last week at the Back Mountain YMCA. The decision of the judges was based on attire.

70 years ago – 1946

Mrs. Richard Sowden was chosen president of the Durbin Sunday School Class at their meeting at the home of Mrs. John Roberts, Claude Street, Friday evening. Other officers: vice president, Mrs. Robert VanHorn; secretary, Mrs. Norti Berti; and treasurer, Mrs. Ord Trumbower.

Seniors at Laketon High School, under the direction of Miss Margaret M. Dunn, will present “Apple Blossom Time” by Eugene G. Hafer on Thursday evening. Cast members include Robert Lutinski, Lorraine Nicholas, Bernard Rogers, Helen Harding Rebecca McColotion, Eleanor Steltz, Joyce Hoover, Alberta Gensel, Clinton Ide, Rita Nicholas, Luther Kocher and Bernard Gray.

Carole Blejwas has been designated chairperson for the 1977 March of Dimes drive in the Idetown-Lehman area.
