DALLAS TWP. — A roar for reading by the Penn State Nittany Lion wrapped up national Read Across America week at Dallas Elementary School March 4.
The Nittany Lion and Dallas Township Police Officer Taylor Dunn teamed up to share a story about baseball legend Babe Ruth with two first-grade classes at Dallas Elementary School.
“The Nittany Lion acted out some of the story,” said Bridget Kapmeyer, a first-grade teacher at Dallas Elementary School. “The Nittany Lion danced with students to the Penn State Fight Song.”
Read Across America is a national initiative held the first week of March to coincide with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. The program is designed to foster a love of reading in children.
Dallas School District noted the occasion by hosting a variety of guest readers consisting of local celebrities, community heroes and school officials.
Dallas Elementary school first-grade teachers Heather Pitcavage and Kapmeyer will continue hosting guest readers for the rest of the month.
There are “more exciting readers scheduled in the next few weeks such as two sets of local authors coming to share their stories, as well as a couple of Dallas High School sports teams including wrestling, football and swim teams,” Kapmeyer said in an email.
