DALLAS — The Back Mountain Memorial Library’s popular annual farmers’ market will return this year, but the venue is changing.
This year’s tenth annual farmers’ market will kick off on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Dallas Elementary School, located off Hildebrandt Road. Library director Martha Butler explained that the auction has “grown to be such a success beyond our wildest expectations.”
That growth, however, also resulted in some parking issues.
“It’s all about the parking,” Butler said. “We have limited spacing here on the library grounds.”
To resolve those issues, Butler said that a venue change was necessary to ensure public safety during the event.
The market will be held each Saturday until Oct. 3, and will feature produce, baked goods, soups and other items from local vendors and farmers.
Butler explained that the library charges a fee to its vendors, which amounts to about $6,500 in proceeds each year.
Butler stressed, however, that the library’s farmers’ market is more about enhancing community.
“Our target is never about the money, for the most part,” she said. “It’s to provide a quality farmers’ market for the Back Mountain. That’s our objective.”
The library held its 69th annual auction last week from Thursday through Sunday. Butler said it was too early to tell how much money the library made from the event, but she said it was a success despite the rain putting a damper on business on Thursday.
“We feel it was a successful auction in spite of the fact that we lost Thursday night,” Butler said.
