20 YEARS AGO — 2000

Recently the Dallas Middle School Student Council held its annual Penny Wars contest. The money raised is donated to charities that the Student Council has selected. The students in sixth grade won the contest for the second year in a row. Eight hundred and sixty dollars was raised by the Middle School students. The money was equally divided between a local charity and the United Way of Wyoming Valley. Ms. Norine Amesbury, Student Council advisor, stated that this was a very successful campaign thanks to the students’ enthusiastic participation.

Youth members from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Shavertown recently participated in service project at Penn State Wilkes-Barre in Lehman. The group assembled and distributed bags containing soda, fruit and other snacks to Penn State students living at the Nittany Woodlands Apartments adjacent to the campus during final exams week. Participating were: Rev. Cheryl Cavalari, Nicole Sabatura, Laura Loeffler, Katie Dale, Ardeth Dale, Youth Group Advisor, Eric Kowalek, Andrew Dale, David Kowalek and Jordy Spencer.

30 YEARS AGO — 1990

Two members of the Lake-Lehman High School Band have been selected to attend the District 9 Orchestra Festival to be held Jan. 24-27 at the Susquehanna Community High School. The two Lake-Lehman students will be among 101 dedicated musicians from 38 schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Attending will be Scott Brown, trombone, and Sara Yoblonski, oboe.

Recently 20 members from Boy Scout Troop #281 from Dallas, completed, with full packs, a 15-mile section of the Appalachian Trail beginning in Wind Gap, Pa. and ending at the Delaware Water Gap. During their three day experience, scouts worked on their camping, cooking and hiking skill awards. Participants are: Eric McTague, David Petrikonis, Richard Sylvia, Craig Bowersox, James Galliford, Brian Achuff, Donald Hosey, Chris Pelton, Dean Evans, Chad Williams, Charles Wasserott V, Randy Hozempa, Mark Chappell, David Seidel, David Townsend and Jason Toluba. The boys were accompanied by Charles Wasserott IV, Scoutmaster, Jeff Townsend, Weblos Leader, John Achuff, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Mark Hozempa, Jr., Assistant Scoutmaster.

40 YEARS AGO — 1980

Mark II Family Restaurants, Inc. announced that they have engaged the service of Bridgette Correalle as a consultant in the area of dining room sales and customer satisfaction. Mrs. Correalle’s many faceted talents will be part of the continuing improvements in the expanding restaurant organization. She has functioned as hostess-cashier at the Dallas restaurant since 1975.

Dallas Senior High School power technology students have received a certificate of merit from the editors of “Mechanix Illustrated” magazine. The students received the commendation from the editors for their expert craftsmanship in their workshop projects. The award will be presented in an upcoming issue of the magazine. The students have completed a custom-made motorcycle, four student motorcycles and restored 25 cars for the program.

Cub Pack 155, Trucksville, held their annual Pinewood Derby on Friday, January 18. Following the den run-offs, the top three boys from each den raced their cars to find the three fastest cars in the pack. Those winners were: first place (gold medal), Shane Fegley; second place (silver medal), Arron Kelley; and third place (bronze medal), Keith Reb.

50 YEARS AGO — 1970

The original poems of ten Dallas Senior High School students will be included in a poetry anthology entitled, “Young America Sings” which will be published early in February by the National Poetry Press. Mrs. William A. Moran, teacher of English at the high school, has received certificates of acceptance for publication of the poems of Nancy Pichert, Patti Lewis, Susan Neilson, Tena Hicks, Debbie Mitchell, Janice Culp, Roger Brown, Nancy Howell and Debbie Shook, sophomores. Lorene Daring, a senior, has also been awarded a certificate of acceptance.

Harold J. Rose, Jr., 25 Harris Hill Road, was named president and chief executive officer of the Wyoming National Bank of Wilkes-Barre at the annual reorganization meeting of the bank held Tuesday afternoon following the annual stockholder’s meeting. Rose, at age 34, is one of the youngest bank presidents in the country. Rose is a native of Wyoming Valley, a graduate of Westmoreland High School and attended Wilkes-Barre Business College, majoring in Accounting.

60 YEARS AGO — 1960

Rose Anne Patner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Patner, Fernbrook, has been chosen as one of the hostesses for Eastern Airline’s new jet, the DC 8, and is presently receiving special training for her new position at Miami Springs Villa, Fla. Miss Patner recently chosen to fly Eastern’s chartered trips, was among the staff and crew to follow the Columbine on the president’s recent trip to Augusta, Ga. The Patners had the pleasure of seeing Rose Anne shaking hands with Mamie and Ike on Dave Garroway’s morning program.

Westmoreland Key Club will meet Friday evening at 7:30. New members who have been accepted for their community and school efforts will be installed during the evening. New members who will be admitted are Lou Chere, Stuart Stahl, Barry Kennington, Charles Kishbaugh, Lynn McCarty and William Keaye.

70 YEARS AGO — 1950

Miss Edith Dietz, Center Hill Road, was hostess to the Christian Fellowship Society of Huntsville Christian Church last Wednesday evening. Important changes regarding election of officers were adopted at the business meeting and plans were made for a box social to be held during Valentine week. Present were Rev. Charles H. Frick, Mrs. Gerald Frantz, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Covert, Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Culp, Mr. and Mrs. William Eckert, Mrs. Kenneth Brobst, Miss Mildred Major, Mrs. Eva Warmouth, Dale Warmouth, Mrs. Mabel Honeychurch and Miss Edith Dietz.

Mrs. Alice Tinsley is general chairman of the second annual banquet of the Dallas Township Alumni Association to be held Saturday, February 18 at 6:30. Other committee members: Mrs. Alice Stevens, Miss Mildred Devens and Mrs. Dorothy Verfaille; music, Wilma Hess and Barbara Hope.

Third Annual Community Concert of Back Mountain talent will be held in Kingston Township High School Auditorium on Friday evening, March 24 at 8. Talent obtained to present the program exceeds all previous concerts. This concert was started three years ago to encourage at greater interest in music throughout the Back Mountain area. The program is sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Largely responsible for its success is Mrs. Paul Winter who has again been appointed to chairman.
