20 YEARS AGO — 1999

The Gate of Heaven 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team recently took first place in the St. Mary’s Old Forge Holiday Tournament with a 37-35 win over Holy Rosary of Duryea. Janelle Zabresky and Sandy Krogulski led all scorers with 16 and 10 points each. Katy Whalen and Liz Clements provided the defensive spark in the back and forth finale.

Amy Withers, 15, of Dallas, recently competed in the Talent Olympics in the Poconos. Amy entered five different vocal categories, placing first in three. She placed first in “up tempo” by singing her own version of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” a capella. Amy is a sophomore at Dallas Senior High School where she is an active member of the Color Guard, Indoor Guard, Chorus and Girls Select Chorus.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Several Lake-Lehman students have qualified for the Johns Hopkins University Center for the Advancement of Academically Talented Youth (CTY). To qualify for the CTY each student has scored at the 97th percentile or above on a national standardized test for verbal and math ability. In January 1990, the students who have qualified for the CTY will take the College Boards which will permit parents and students to assess strengths and weaknesses in given areas, and to plan accordingly. Qualifying students are: Thomas Brown, Amanda Turner, Jessica Noon, Joel Toluba, Geoffrey Oldham, Christy Jo Welter, Shannon Kelly, Jonathan Tenenbaum, Christopher Pagoda, Allison Milunic and Bethany Offshack.

Art students from Miss Jane Walzak’s classes at the Dallas Senior High School made their annual trip to various establishments in the community to paint Christmas themes on windows for the holiday season. Participants included Melinda English, Chris Kuhar and Sylvia Stevens.

Lake-Lehman High School Band members were honored recently at the band’s annual Christmas banquet held at Convention Hall, Pittston Township. Thirteen senior members were presented jackets for their years of dedication in the band. Senior members are: Valerie Kliamovich, Colleen Delaney, Lori Stair, Molly White, Lori Lamoreaux, Kevin Koflanovich, John Lincoski, Shelly Hoover, Jason Yencha, Darcie Yetter, Rob Wilson, Ralph Bowman and Scott Brown.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

The Madrigal Singers will present several selections in the Dallas Senior High School Christmas Concert Sunday afternoon. Dave Orehutsky, Rob Robinson, Linda Akers, Sue Williams, Cathy Millington Arline Datly, Terry Ross and Matt Hoidra will be the vocalists.

The annual Christmas Party of the Altar & Rosary Society of Gate of Heaven Church was held recently at the Knights of Columbus in Luzerne. Mary Beth O’Konski, toastmistress for the evening, introduced Rev. William Cusick, moderator of the society, and Rita Lyons, society president. Incoming officers of the club include Theresa Thompson, president; Midge Scruitsky, 1st vice president; Mary Lou Stahovec, 2nd vice president; Jane Gritman, treasurer; Barbara Strazdus, secretary; Ruth Farris, chairman and Nancy Parsons, chairman.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Brownie Troop 650 recently attended a performance of “The Princess and the Pea” at King’s College. The group of girls was chaperoned by Mrs. Hands Dreher, leader; Mrs. Lloyd Warneka, assistant leader; Mrs. James Thomas and Mrs. Clyde Davis. In attendance were Sheri Ann Bango, Marcia Davis, Susan Dreher, Martha Dick, Molly Elston, Peggy Elston, Kate Kale, Christine Kern, Gayle Kirk, Lori Lieb, Linda McDonald, Martha Shannon, Michelle Thomas and Lynn Warneka.

The Acme Market – long a Dallas landmark – will have a new home this summer when work is completed on the huge new market now under construction at the corner of Church and Foster Streets, Dallas. At ground breaking ceremonies Monday morning, Acme Markets’ Division Manager Harry Carson announced the new structure will boast an area of 20,000 sq. feet, or 25 percent more areas than the Shavertown Acme.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

All the community is invited to attend a Christmas Party around the Christmas tree at Lehman Center on Friday evening at 7. The brass choir from the Lehman school band will play a group of carols under the direction of John Milauskas. A girls’ chorus will assist in singing which will be led by Myron Baker. Mrs. Gilbert Tough will be pianist.

The Jonathan R. Davis Volunteer Fire Company of Idetown will sponsor a “Tots to Teens Revue” Friday evening, January 8, at Lake-Lehman High School Auditorium. The Revue, produces and directed by Kathleen R. Sweeny, will have as its cast students from Miss Sweeny’s local studios, Included will be Dinna Smith and Judy Ann Moore in a specialty number. Proceeds will be used to defray the costs of auxiliary firefighting equipment for the new truck which is expected shortly.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Kingston Township Seniors will hold their Yuletide Ball in the High School Wednesday, December 28. Jack Melton will furnish music. Fred Zercoe is general chairman. Committee members: decorations, Rachel Reese, Harriet Williams, Marilyn Spare, Kenneth Malkemes and Harrison Cooke; refreshments, John Engle, Dick Houghwout, Dale Steinhauer; tickets, Lois Lamoreaux, Beverly Atwell, Peggy Webster; publicity, Dorothy Houser, Charlotte Gregory; orchestra, Jean Frank.

Mrs. Malcolm Borthwick was elected president of the King’s Daughters Class of Shavertown Methodist Church at a meeting of the class on Monday evening. Mrs. Charles Mannear was named vice president with the following members elected to other offices: Mrs. Lemuel Troster, recording secretary; Mrs. William Barney, Corresponding secretary; Mrs. Robert Clark, treasurer.
