20 YEARS AGO — 1999
Lake-Noxen third graders collected 400 lb. of dog food and supplies as part of their Iditarod project. The items were donated to the Luzerne County SPCA. Taking part in the project were: Evelyn June Brislin, Andrea Butchko, Sarah Sorber, Justine Martin, Dylan Chewey, Wade Ian Howell, Lindsay Williams, Tiffany Ritz, Julie Vitack, Alora Russell and Eddie Traver.
Jen McCall, a former Lake-Lehman standout, was presented with the volleyball Coach’s Award at the College Misericordia Fall Athletic Awards Banquet. A freshman with the women’s volleyball team, McCall played in 78 games for the Cougars. She has 247 receptions and 143 digs while helping the Cougars to a 17-11 record and a spot in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference semi-finals. The Coach’s Award is presented to an athlete who best demonstrates leadership and dedication.
30 YEARS AGO — 1989
Third grade students from the Dallas Elementary School collected food for the food bank in order to be certain the needy families in the Back Mountain have food for Christmas. Participants included Fred Krispin, Amy Michaels, Marla Brown, Kathryn Palmatier and Richard Samanas.
Fourth grade students from Gate of Heaven School decorated the entrance to The Meadows Nursing Center with holiday posters they made. James Simon, Stephen Bolin and Jennifer Bernick accompanied Mrs. Marcella Hiller, teacher, to the center.
Cathy Mugford of Dallas and Karen Cox of Shavertown are on the planning committee for the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Century Club holiday gala, scheduled for December 10 at the Hayfield House in Lehman. The party is held each year by the campus Advisory Board for Century Club donors to the annual Fund Campaign.
40 YEARS AGO — 1979
The committee for the Christmas Bazaar at St. Frances Cabrini Church, Mt. Olivet Road, Carverton, met recently to complete plans for the two-day evet, Saturday and Sunday following mass. Handmade craft gifts and baked goods will be for sale. Members of the committee are: Marilyn Pavlovec, Susan Starolis, Rev. Hugh McGroarty, Terri Haberstick, Joyce Handley and Pat Luke.
Gate of Heaven cheerleaders took first place in the Knights of Columbus 3987 Fifth Annual Cheerleading Tournament, defeating 16 junior high squads. Following three days of competition at Bishop O’Reilly, the local squad took the first place trophy for their second first place win of this season. Members of the squad are: Chris Kindler, Lisa Van Etten, Larisa Bergevin, Michele Farris, April Petroski, Cathy Clamer, Michelle McGraw, Patti Judge, Kim Dougherty, Chris Panuccio, Pam Solinski, Karen Martin, Adele Correale and Liz Burke.
50 YEARS AGO — 1969
Jim Heller, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Skip Heller, Dallas, captured a first place ribbon and trophy in the 4-H State Finals last month at the Farm Show Arena, Harrisburg. Jim won the awards in the pole bending class with his pony “Silver King,” a chestnut gelding owned by Mohawk Stables, Harveys Lake. A ninth grade student at Lake-Lehman High School, Jim has been in 4-H only two years, but is an experienced horseman. He started to ride at the age of two. In the past three years he has won 18 trophies and 59 ribbons in various shows.
Brownie Troop 710, which usually meets at the Orange United Methodist Church, held their investiture at the north edge of Perry’s Pond last week. Brownies received pins from their mothers preceding a wiener roast held by the pond. The eight girls invested were Annette Bethel, Nancy Coolbaugh, Linda Daubert, Susan Dickinson, Janice Hislop, Holly Moore and Margaret Perry.
Plans have been completed by the Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Jackson Township Fire Company to serve a banquet to the Lake-Lehman football players and their mothers next Saturday. Millie Yanchik was named general chairman of the affair at the regular meeting of the auxiliary Nov. 19.
60 YEARS AGO — 1959
Annual Christmas Dinner of Altar and Rosary Society of St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown, will be held Tuesday in the church auditorium. Mrs. George Messersmith, chairman, has announced that Rev. Lane Kilburn, Dean of King’s College, will be guest speaker. Mrs. John Bourke will be toastmistress.
Bird Club members will bring abandon birds’ nests to the December 10 meeting in the Library Annex. Assignments will be made for the Audubon Christmas Bird-Count, to take place December 26 under the direction of Edwin Johnson, director of field trips. Mrs. Arnott Jones will preside.
70 YEARS AGO — 1949
The senior class of Kingston Township High School is presenting a Minstrel Premiere tonight at 8 o’clock in the high school auditorium. The first act consists of the laugh-making endmen Donald Case, Carl Henning, Harry Trebilcox, Peggy Webster, Harrison Cook, Carl Johnson, Bruce Cleasby and Charlotte Gregory with their comical songs and jokes. The chorus is made up of a large group of students of the high school. Among the soloists are Shirley Drake, Jack Merolla, Janice Rose, James Owens, Louise Mikolaichik, Sylvia Jones, Harriet Williams and Edward Charney.
Putting male companions to shame, Madge Space Johns, wife of Richard Johns, shot a fine six-point, 165-pound buck shortly after noon Tuesday while hunting on the hill beyond Parrish Heights with her husband, and William Jeter, Ed Keller and Bob Johns. Last year Mrs. Johns also shot a buck; but it got away, ran some distance, fell down and was claimed by two boys who loaded it in a Jeep and carried it off. Madge made sure of this year’s kill with a well-placed shot.
