20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Janelle Perlis, a senior field hockey captain at Lake-Lehman High School recently scored her 100th career goal. She was awarded the games ball, balloons and a huge Tiger by her teammates and coaches, who joined in celebrating this accomplishment. Janelle is a 4-year started for the Black Knights under Coach Jean Lipski. She is an All-State and All-American and was a member of the U-16 National Field Hockey Team.

Ten senior members of the Award-Winning Lake-Lehman High School Band were awarded jackets on Sunday, Sept. 26. The 18th annual “March of Champions” was hosted by the band and the senior members were honored for their hard work and dedication. The jackets were given by the Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors and presented to each senior by Band Director, Edward A. Richards and Assistant Band Director, Mrs. Maureen Richards. Jackets were awarded to: Kimberly Bronson, Adrianne Rigez, Amanda Estus, Katie Boice, Nathan Matusek, George Maille, Jeremy Yakus, Ryan Mariner, Bill Metzger and Matt Keller.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Dallas Senior High School Peer Helpers Program is in its third season of assisting the younger and new students on the school. They assist other students with drug problems, curriculum problems and act as a support system for new students during adjustment time. Some of the Peer Helpers are: Mark Labbate, Amy Kowalski, Kristin Hardisky, Jennifer Rosentel, Mary Lou Baines, Kelly Cleary, Amy Nadzan, Derek Petrini, Sam Jayne, Peter Selensky, Steve Oliver, Moly Connolly, Emery Yurko, Keith McDonald, Martin Allison and Joseph Hudacek.

The Harveys Lake Yacht Club recently held its annual “Cups and Flags” ceremony when trophies were presented to the winners of the club’s various sailing categories. The Comet Fleet was represented by the following: first place, The John Curtis Trophy went to Jack Barnes and crew, Charles Wasserott V. Second place, The Truckenmiller Trophy winner was Joan Williams and Jane Harter, crew. Third place, The John Piepon winner: Dr. Lane Giddings, and crew Linda Schall. The Woolbert Trophy for the most improved sailor went to Linda Schall.

It’s auction time again at Gate of Heaven School, Dallas. The PTG is sponsoring its Fourth Annual Fall Auction, Saturday at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Committee Chairperson, Jay Tanner, has announced a wide selection of holiday gifts at bargain prices. All proceeds will benefit Gate of Heaven School. Auction committee: Tina Oulette, Arlene Feleccia, Virginia Reisser, Mary Ellen Roch, Joan Wagner, John Pambianco, Paul Gaffney, Dennis Garvey, Ann Marie Narcum, George Narcum.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Dallas High School students joined over 200 other students this past week to participate in College Misericordia’s annual Business Career Day Program. Participants from Dallas were:

Tauna Brobst, Dallas; Linda Sosin, Dallas; Cherie Stroud, Dallas; Bernie Simon, Dallas and Connie Suder, Dallas.

Miss Hillary Maslow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Maslow, Sutton Road, Shavertown, was named Wyoming Seminary Homecoming Queen in ceremonies held last Saturday during the halftime of the Seminary and Wilbraham-Monson football game. Crowning the queen was Miss Becky Smith, also of Dallas, and the 1978mHomecoing Queen.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Final plans have been made for the International Fashion Show to be held Thursday at 8 p.m. at Irem Temple, Wilkes-Barre. The show, sponsored by the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club, will be presented by Hess Brothers of Allentown. Mrs. Edward E. Kale Jr., Mrs. Bruce Tenley and Mrs. Edward Thompson, all of Dallas, are co-chairmen of the show. The show, which is the club’s biggest project, will feature fashions from Spain, Paris, Rome, Turkey, Asia and America. It is projected to draw fashion conscious women from as far as Hazleton and Scranton.

Residents of the Back Mountain area usually associate the name of Pearle Gilroy, Shavertown, with success in blood collections. But most persons do not realize that she can also be associated with an emergency service to servicemen in this country and overseas. Mrs. Gilroy, through the American Red Cross, provides a channel of service between servicemen on active duty and their families in the area. While residents are sleeping, she is on duty every Monday night and whenever else she is needed. She operates a dusk to dawn emergency service, receiving and sending messages, calling direct to any military installation in the country. She also sends messages overseas via Washington, D.C.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Back Mountain Branch YMCA held a hayride and wiener roast on Saturday at Mohawk Riding Academy, Harveys Lake. Despite the downpour of rain, an enjoyable time was had by the 35 boys and girls who participated in the program. Some of those present were: David Cutler, Jimmy Brown, Barbara Brown, Bill Pace, Barry Markowitz, Carol Montross, Art Miller, Art Baird, Carol Pickett, Ruth Tinsley, Bb Hewitt, Wayne Sproul, Bob Graham and Sue Davis.

Mrs. John Girvan turned out a big batch of pies on Monday, in advance of Election Day, when she annually serves snacks to the Election Board and to anybody who wants a piece of pie. Most popular, she reports, are pumpkin, banana cream, coconut cream, lemon meringue and chocolate. For thirty years Mrs. Girvan has been doing this at her home on Lake Street.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Alderson W.S.C.S. made plum puddings at Beaumont Cannery last week and are now selling them. Place your orders with Mrs. Alan Kistler, Mrs. Warren Dennis, Mrs. Gilbert Carpenter or any other member of the society.

Eunice Humphries was installed as Noble Grand, Lady Toby Rebekah Lodge, and Mary Shaver, Vice-Grand, at the meeting last Wednesday. Other officers: Margaret Robbins, Pearl Walton, Edith McElwee, Alice Davis, Dorothy Culver, Betty Farr, Harriet Rogers, Myrtle Rineman, Frances Smith, Alice Hand, Jennie Shaver, Bernice Hill, Arlyne Siglin, Alberta Lohmann and Matilda Croom.
