20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Scouts from Pack 232, Gate of Heaven Church, used last week’s meeting to make costumes and decorations for Halloween. The scouts and their leaders gathered in the Gate of Heaven School gym. Showing off their pumpkin spiders were Joey Collini, Ryan Regan and Greg Nothstein.

Volunteers from the Wycallis Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization put on their best play clothes and shared some old-fashioned fun with students during recess last Thursday. The adults and children played traditional school yard games including jump rope, hop scotch, marbles and four square. Some of those enjoying the day are: Matt Yedesko, Arianne Schott, Mrs. Kim Smith, Andrew McCabe, Ben Lewis, Scott Yedesko, Alexandra Smith, Jodi Bartorillo, Stevie Kioske, Mrs. Nadine Young, Chelsi Hunter, Jason Crispell, Zachary Smith, Caleb Hufford, Jacob Hilstolsky, Olivia Dworak, Jon Laity, Erik Westfield, Kimberly Coscia, Samantha Hinson, Steven Shatrowskas and Dorreen Karrott.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Richard Fuller, Associate Professor of Art at Wilkes College, has been nominated for the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Professor of the Year Award. Fuller is in his 21st year of teaching at Wilkes, and was honored for his outstanding teaching ability. As part of the celebration of o Higher education Week, Fuller was presented with a special certificate commemorating hos nomination for the CASE Award. He resides in Dallas with his wife and family.

The Dallas Middle School Student Council, under the guidance of Miss Noreen Amesbury, recently held its annual election of officers for the 1989-90 school year. Steve Lieberman was elected president; Jill Kowalski, vice president; Karen Wisnieski, corresponding secretary; Becky Yurko, treasurer; and Kathy Delinsky, recording secretary.

Angela Patla, a junior at Lake-Lehman High School, was selected as one of the semi-finalists in the Miss Pennsylvania U.S.A. Pageant held last month in Monroeville, Pa. Angela, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Patla of Sweet Valley, was one of 97 contestants from all sections of Pennsylvania. Her application selected from among 700 entries.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

The Back Mountain Jay-C-ettes recently welcomed eight new member as part of their recent recruitment program. The Back Mountain Jay-C-ettes are a non-profit civic organization providing numerous services to the community. Over the past year they have been involved in the Back Mountain Library Auction, Luzerne County Fall Fir, distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets, and pictures with Santa, just to name a few. New member are: Debbie Natitus, Karen Berlew, Stephanie Reisch, Joan Marshall, Janice Kern, Barbara Regan, Diane Sharkness and Nancy Garvey.

As part of the installation ceremonies held by the Kiwanis Club of Dallas, retiring President Reese Pelton was presented his Past President’s Plaque by the new President Paul Hession. Kiwanis Division 15 Lt. Governor George McCutcheon installed the new officers and directors at their Oct. 10 meeting at Irem Temple Country Club. Newly installed officers are: Hession, president; George Maculloch and Paul Selingo, vice presidents; Clifford Parker, treasurer; Robert Lawhorn, secretary; Walter Roberts, John Rosses and John Luke, Jr. directors.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

A queen will be chosen from the senior class to reign over Homecoming festivities at Dallas Senior High School this weekend. The student will be crowned at the football games between Dallas and Nanticoke Saturday. Seven girls have been selected by members of the senior class. They are Judy Allen, Barbara Connelly, Roberta Gilbert, Debbie Hartman, Virginia Jenkins, Karen Kennedy and Caroline Stout. Students of the entire school will cast their votes for the one girl to be crowned queen.

Dallas Kiwanis plans a pancake and sausage jamboree Saturday, Nov. 1 I the Dallas Senior High School cafeteria. The jamboree is a Kiwanis project to raise funds for community and civic activities. Clyde Davis III is general chairman and Robert Parry, cochairman of the dinner Leo Corbett, Harry Lefko and Edward Wilson are in charge of cafeteria service and food preparation.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Annual Turkey Dinner sponsored by Dallas Rotary Club will be held on Thursday evening, November 5, in the Jackson Township Fire Hall. This affair has grown in popularity until this year ticket sales of 1000 are anticipated. James Besecker, general chairman, reports that the following are serving as committee chairmen: ticket sales, Myron S. Baker, assisted by Phil Moore, Bill Krimmel and Fred Jennings; door, Dr. L.E. Jordan, assisted by Dr. Stanley Hozempa; ticket sales, door – Harold Titman, assisted by Harvey Johnson; in charge of waiters, Dan Chapman and Hanford Eckman, Jr.; kitchen, Red Ambrose, Paul Gross, Jack Landis, Joe Sekera, Ed Lannan; ice cream and milk, Charlie Roberts and Wilson Garringer.

Dress is optional for Harveys Lake Woman’s Service Club dance at O’Connell’s Twin Lakes, Friday night. Mrs. Carl Schreiner, Jr., general chairman, is assisted by these decorations chairmen: Mrs. Thomas Garrity, Mrs. Joseph Rauch and Mrs. Edward Kanasky.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Cleo Carey, daughter of Mrs. Karlene Carey, Pioneer Avenue, Shavertown, has been awarded first prize in a Beautiful Child Contest held recently at Dallas 5 and 10 Cent Store. The little three-year-old blonde received a large hand-painted portrait of the prize-winning picture.

Co-chairmen Henry Peterson and Joseph “Red” Ambrose have announced the names of judges for the annual Back Mountain Hallowe’en Parade which will be held in Dallas on Monday night. Representing Dallas Township will be Alice Yaple, Mary O’Neil, Sheldon Mosier, Fred Hughey and Raymond Kuhnert from the school faculty, and Mrs. Betty Dixon, Mrs. Louise Goddard,

Mrs. Mildred Pruett, Stella Lancio and Catherine Evans, representing the parents. Representing Dallas Borough will be Mrs. Arline Rood, Mrs. Louise Colwell, Margaret Garris, Florence Park, Catherine Scureman and D.W. Rockowicz, from the school faculty, and Al Gibbs, Mrs. Alton Sprout, L.L. Richardson, Mrs. Peggy Weaver and Durelle Scott, Jr., representing parents.
