The Dallas Lions Club held their annual Installation Dinner at the Castle Inn. Installation of new officers was conducted by Lion Board Member Paul McCue with outgoing President Dr. David Spring presenting remarks on the group’s activities throughout the past year. New officers for the 1999-2000 year are: Carlton Chase, Lion Tamer; Gary Hozempa, Board Member; Nick Calvitti, Board Member; Dr. Jay Tanner, President; Thomas Bagley, Secretary; Jack Williams, 3rd Vice President; Patrick Burke, treasurer; Frank Michael, Tail Twister; David Fitch, 1st Vice President and Joseph Canfield, 2nd Vice President.
The congregation of Trucksville United Methodist Church recently recognized 13 members who joined the church in 1949. During the service Rev. Charles W. Naugle presented each person with a fifty year pin certificate. Following the service the Membership Committee gave a reception in their honor. Honored were: Barbara Dingle, Walter Phillips, Lorraine Chamberlain, Elizabeth Williams, George Gaylord, Bette Truscott, Jeanne Thomas, Frank Billings, Robert Johnson, Harold Birth, Rita Nichols, John Roushey, Jr., and Robert Shoemaker.
Breean Davies, daughter of “Bud” and Denise Davies of Jackson Twp. has been chosen as the 1999-2000 Drum Major for the award-winning Lake-Lehman Band. To earn the title of Drum Major, Ms. Davies had to conduct the band before four judges. She also had to call commands and take a written test consisting of music theory.
30 YEARS AGO — 1989
Six skaters from the Rollaway Skating Club of Dallas have qualified for the United States National Championships, as a result of their performance at the U.S. Eastern Regionals in South Amboy, New Jersey. The top three skaters in each event will compete against skaters from the nine regions in the United States for first, second or third places. Leaving tomorrow for the national competition in Fort Worth, Texas are: Lisa Berger, George Manzoni, Trudy Wandel, Franmar Kopko, Jeff Mullen and Roy Holcomb.
Miss Stephanie Ann Ruckno, daughter of Louis and Deborah Ruckno of Dallas has been selected as an entrant in the 1989 Miss Pennsylvania Teen All American Pageant to be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Mount Laurel Hilton on Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6. This event will select Pennsylvania’s representative to the 12th Annual Miss Teen All American Pageant to be held at Sheraton Bal Harbour Resort in Miami Beach next July. Miss Ruckno is a recent graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston. She is a part-time employee at Hillside Farms Ice Cream and has been accepted in the freshman class of Pennsylvania State University, Main Campus at State College for the 1989-1990 school year.
40 YEARS AGO — 1979
William A. Dick of Trucksville has been named director of College Misericordia’s Act 101 Program. The appointment to the administrative post was announced by Rev. William B. Hill, Acting President of the college. Dick has been involved with the program prior to being named Director, working as a counselor and a reading specialist.
Chris Frederick, nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Frederick, Harveys Lake, took first place on the 1979 NBA Schwinn Tour at Royersford, Sunday, July 15. Chris competes locally at the Rocky Ridge Bicycle Motocross (BMX) Park, Courtdale. This is his first year in racing and he has collected six first place and two second place trophies.
50 YEARS AGO — 1969
Installation of Officers of the Women of Rotary for 1969-70 was held recently at a dinner meeting at the Irem Temple Country Club. New and retiring officers are: Mrs. R. Spencer Martin, first vice president; Mrs. Walter Mohr, secretary; Mrs. Ralph Postorive, retiring treasurer; Mrs. Herman Otto, president; Mrs. Earl Phillips, second vice president; Mrs. John Casner, retiring corresponding secretary; Mrs. Archer Mohr, retiring president; Mrs. John Konsavage, corresponding secretary and Mrs. Joseph Morton treasurer.
A Court of Awards was held by Harveys Lake Junior Girl Scouts, Troop 638, recently at Camp Wildwood, Harveys Lake. The girls were attending a three-day weekend session at the camp, enjoying swimming and badge work. The court of awards began with a flag ceremony and ended with a candle-light ceremony. Scouts receiving awards were: Kathleen Borton, Patty Cadwalader, Eileen Connolly, June Engle, Marie Fetsko, Ann Fondi, Sheila Morrow, Brenda Merrill, Roberta Miller and Gwen Salansky.

One of the largest rainbow trout taken at Harveys Lake in a decade was caught Tuesday night at 8:30 at Outlet by Earl McCarty of The Dallas Post. McCarty, using a light spin-cast outfit with a No. 8 hook baited with a nightwalker, was still-fishing from his boat with son, Billy, and Nelson Dymond. The fish measures 25 3/8 inches long and weighs 6 ¼ pounds.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harris, Claude Street, Dallas, entertained at dinner on Sunday to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Present at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harris, Bobby, Jr., Carl and Annette Harris of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harris, Cheryl, June and Richard, Jr. of Demunds; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harris of Trucksville, Erne, Gary and Joy, and the guests of honor.
Explorer Scouts of Shavertown Post 232 started down the West Branch of the Susquehanna early Monday evening, leaving Renova at 7, and camping for the night in Hyner Park on the outskirts. They expect to reach Sunbury sometime on Saturday, where cars will meet them for the drive home with their canoes. Making the trip are: Paul Sickert, Peter Blessing, Edward Jenkins, Bob Blessing, John Butler, Barry Dierolf, John Szela, Frank Stocker, Mike Chalawick, Harley Misson, Mike Chalawick, Sr., Joe Noon and Peter Lukasavage..
70 YEARS AGO — 1949
Nellie Holley, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Holley, Dallas Township was painfully injured when her bicycle went over an embankment at the top of Roushey Plot Hill last Thursday evening. She was taken to the hospital by Willard Newberry, a neighbor. Five sutures were necessary to close her wounds. Residents said the six-foot wall which covers an area of approximately 50 feet has no guard rails to offer protection. Four days previous to the Holley girl’s accident another child, Leona Lecht went over the wall on her bicycle.
Mr. and Mrs. Conway Paden entertained a group of agriculture instructors and their families at a picnic supper at their home at Alderson Friday evening. Mr. Paden is a vocational agriculture teacher at Laketon High School. Present were: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Newcomer, Shirley Newcomer, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Gartley, Patsy and Jimmy Gartley, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Mosier, Marilyn Mosier, Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Koch, Patty and Carl Koch, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Henney, Mr. Ray Branican, Margaret Paden and the host and hostess.
