20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Aaron Katyl of Dallas won the 16-18 Boys Division of the Anthracite Golf Association Junior Tournament event held at Valley Country Club in Conyngham. One hundred thirteen golfers participated in the event, and Aaron captured the event with a round of 74. John Pavlik also shot a round of 74 but on a match of cards Aaron won with three consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15. Aaron is the son of William and Cynthia Katyl of Dallas.

The Dallas Area Federated Women’s Club recently awarded book scholarships to Vanessa Velikis and Jeffrey Nutche. Vanessa, daughter of Debra Velikis, Dallas, plans to attend Wilkes University and major in pre-med. Jeffrey, son of John and Susan Nutche, Shavertown, plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh where he will major in Biology. Both are graduating seniors of Dallas High School.

David McLaughlin-Smith, Principal, announces that academic awards were recently presented to outstanding sixth grade students at Lake-Noxen Elementary School. Awards are presented to the top student in five different subject areas. Their names are engraved on plaques placed on permanent display in the lobby of the school. Winners are: Susan Dobinick, Language Arts; Jason Wagner, Mathematics and Computer Science; Patrick Cocallo, Science; Kenneth Davis and Paul Rigez, Social Studies.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Recently Cub Scouts from Pack 331 Harveys Lake and Pack 336 Centermoreland were awarded the Parvulis Dei Catholic Religious Award at Our Lady of Victory Church in Harveys Lake. Taking part in the ceremony were: Darrell Hogan (grandson of the founder of Pack 331, Dick Williams), Ray Schultz (great grandson of Dick Williams), Aaron O’Neil, Justin Martin, Kenny Olshefski, Mary Pat Brody-O’Neil, unit commissioner, Pack 331, Ken Olshefski, cubmaster Pack 331, Fr. Louis Grippe, pastor, Our Lady of Victory Church, Lynn Martin, unit commissioner Pack 336.

Trucksville Cub Pack 155 visited the Swetland Homestead, Wyoming, July 9 to tour the Colonial Re-enactment being held there. The boys toured the historic Swetland Homestead along with the many colonial displays set up on the grounds. Afterwards they witnessed the re-enactment of the 1778 Battle of Wyoming. Participation in the activities earned the following boys credits in their American Heritage Achievement, toward the rank of Bear and toward their Summertime Award: Jeff Ryan, Tim Pacewicz, John Shaskas, Seth Lajeunesse, Chris Banks, Jim Krispin and Bill Duda.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Lake-Lehman High School varsity cheerleaders recently attended the Stroudsburg Sports Camp where they won ribbons for sparkle and shine, super-spirit and overall excellence. They also received a blue ribbon for overall excellence in final competition and a red ribbon for second place for overall excellence in Grand Champion competition. Cheerleaders who attended the camp are: Sandy Major, Kippie Steele, Liz Mack, Tammy Fox, Ellen Harabin, Judy Lavelle, Beth Donsavage, Susan Conaway, Shari Sutton, Tammy Lincoln, Jean Zaleskas, Wendy Anderson, Lori Edwards and Bethel Cowart.

A first place trophy was awarded to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 4-H Youth Group for their float in the Hunlock Creek Independence Day Parade. The group assembled the float during the months of April and May. Participants included Katie Stefanowicz, Robbie Wilson, Karen and Mike Stefanowicz and Carrieann Konigus.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Dallas Junior Girl Scout Troop 640 enjoyed an all-day outing at Rickett’s Glen State Park July 1. They hiked the Falls Trail, a distance of 3.2 miles. After a “nosebag” lunch, the girls went swimming at Lake Jean. Later in the afternoon, the troop had a cookout and a scavenger hunt, which worked on their Rambler and Foot Traveler badges. Members of the troop present were Sara Baraket, Cathy Barry, Cheryl Bogart, Janice Demmy, Cindy Garris, Nancy Law, Cathy Misson, Debra Prater, Abby Rodda and Susan Tenley.

St. Ann’s Altar Society of St. Andrew’s Eastern Orthodox Church will hold a Bake Sale Saturday morning at Sandy Bottom, Harveys Lake. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of breads, tarts, crullers, pigs in the blanket and pierogies. Mrs. Jacob Brin is chairman, Mrs. Michael Brin, cochairman.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

There are some smart trout in Back Mountain streams but it will take a pretty cagey one to resist rising to a fly tied with hair from a movie star’s head. They’ll have a chance to prove how tricky they are after this year’s Library Auction for star of screen and TV have sent their hair to Bill Robbins to be made up in trout flies and sold at the auction. Betty Hutton of the new TV series “Goldie” has sent a lock of her blonde hair from California, as has Joan Shawlee who played with Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like It Hot!” The French actress Gigi Perreau of the TV series “Agnes;” Tom Conway of the “Falcon;” and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Tracy have all contributed hair for Bill’s flies.

George Mason of Kunkle did pretty well in the Indiantown Gap Coon Hound trials on Sunday. Thunderbird, a shepherd-type dog, took first tree, and Duz, a unique greyhound and shepherd mixture, took first line.

Bowman’s Creek Lions met at Herman Kern’s Restaurant last Friday evening and elected Gilbert Boston as president for the coming year. Other officers: first vice president, Leslie Kocher; second vice president, George Brody; third vice president, Arlie Harvey; secretary, Robert Timko; treasurer, Louis May; tail twister, Robert Ness; Lion tamer, Willard Bender; director, two years, Fred Coole and Robert Z. Belles.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Mrs. Malcolm Nelson is chairman of the dance sponsored by Harveys Lake Woman’s Service Club at Beaumont Hotel next Friday evening. She will be assisted by Mrs. James Garey, Mrs. Myron Williams, Mrs. Carl Shreiner Jr., Mrs. Clyde Hoyt, and Mrs. Eldridge Shaver.

Kay Valentine and Peg Weaver and their girl scouts have done a swell job on the play house given by Shavertown Builder Supply for the Auction today and tomorrow. Two shiny coats of white paint, fancy little curtains and flower boxes filled with red geraniums did the trick.
