20 YEARS AGO — 1999
On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, a service of Confirmation was performed by Rev. Charles H. Grube, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown. After completing two years of study, the following were received into the voting membership of St. Paul’s by Affirmation of their Baptism: Justin Ash, Nathan Bohlander, Paul Hiller, Laura Loeffler, Jacquelyn Manley, Alecia Morris and Amy Roberts.
Several Wyoming Seminary Lower School students from the Back Mountain were recently recognized with certificates of merit for their outstanding artwork in Wilkes-Barre’s Fine Arts Fiesta. Under the direction of instructors Eileen Warren and Lorraine Jarden, the students exhibited work in a variety of media. Kelly Dickinson of Shavertown and Chelsea Yenason of Dallas displayed their award-winning coil baskets. Gabrielle Richterman was an Excellence in Graphic Award winner for her painting. Others who were recognized included Whitney Pollock, Dallas, drawing, and Navene Dasa, Shavertown, drawing.
Todd Buckley, an eighth grade student at the Dallas Middle School, was awarded a certificate of merit by the Pennsylvania Middle School Association. The award is designed to honor outstanding young adolescents who demonstrate leadership abilities, good citizenship and have made positive contributions to their school.
30 YEARS AGO — 1989
The Penn State Lion and friends from Dallas Junior High School will learn about the world of finance and investments in the upcoming “Cents-Ible Kids” program at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus this summer. A special feature is a trip to Wall Street and the Word Trade Center. Participating students include Steve Lieberman, Todd Paczewski, Alison Labbate and Andrea Shone.
The first through sixth grades of Wyoming Valley Montessori School recently performed Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for their parents. Back Mountain residents taking part in the performance were: Peter Redmond, Shavertown, as Demetrius; Jennifer Jerrytone, Dallas, as Helena; Juli Durkin, Dallas, as Hermia; Robert Weaver, Lehman, as Bottom and Jonathan Blome, Shavertown, as Lysander.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre sophomore, Kimberly A Weidner, Lehman, was honored with a special athletic award at a ceremony held recently at the campus in Lehman. Weidner received the H. Edward Kaminski Memorial Scholarship Award for superior academic achievement, athletic ability, leadership and character. She has earned letters in softball and volleyball at Penn State, was captain of the varsity softball team for two years and was co-captain of the varsity volleyball team.
40 YEARS AGO — 1979
The June meeting of Dallas Junior Woman’s Club was held at Price of Peace Church, Mrs. Robert Eyet presiding. Mrs. John Vozniak, membership chairman, introduced three new members who were then inducted into membership: Mrs. Robert Mittrick, Mrs. Joseph Rupp and Mrs. Bernard Riley.
Recently at the Canasawacta Country Club in New York, Mrs. Vera Tough was honored by the Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors on the occasion of her retirement, for outstanding services to the association. Mrs. Tough was an active member of the Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors for 12 years and held the office of corresponding secretary for 10 of the 12.
Miss Tina Marie Charney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Charney, RD 3, Dallas, placed first runner-up last night in the Miss Unico Contest at the Wyoming Valley Mall. Miss Charney, 1 1979 graduate of Dallas High School, was among twelve contestants representing all the Wyoming Valley Schools. The Unico game will be held June 27 at Wyoming Valley West stadium where Miss Charney will be representing Dallas High School.
50 YEARS AGO — 1969
A graduation party with six of the graduating class serving as hostesses was held Friday evening at Irem Temple Country Club for members of the 1969 gradutaing class of Dallas High School. While the New testaments played, guests danced beneath the long streamers white ribbon and the glimmer of blue tapers. Hostesses were Pamela Sabol, Sue Sipple, Pat Hughey, Debbie Allen, Sue Johnston and Nancy Love.
Miss Priscilla Allison of Lehman, instructor in speech at the Penn State Campus in Lehman, was awarded the coveted Hayfield Award at the college’s annual graduation dinner-dance held recently at Irem Temple Country Club. The award is given annually by the students in recognition of an instructor’s exceptional academic performance and extracurricular service to the academic community.
A highlight of the annual Father and Son banquet of Troop 232, Shavertown, held last Sunday at St. Therese’s Church was the presentation of Eagle Scout awards to William J. Guyette and David Salatino. Mr. John Kitchen is Scoutmaster.
60 YEARS AGO — 1959
Edward Eyerman announced yesterday the Eyerman & Fine, owners of Back Mountain Shopping Center, Shavertown, will shortly start construction of a large new unit at the Northern end of the present Center. The new unit will be occupied late this fall by McCrory’s Variety Store, a national chain which also has a store at the Gateway Shopping Center, Kingston.
Members of the General Solicitation Committee for the Thirteenth Annual Library Auction have about completed plans for house to house canvass which starts Monday. Be ready for them and promise furniture, odds and ends, electrical appliances that work, kitchen ware and dishes, jewelry, baked goods, candy and produce, books or money. Committee members are: Mrs.
Homer Moyer, Mrs. H.W. Smith, Mrs. George Montgomery, Mrs. Myron Baker, Mrs. Ben Marshall, Mrs. Prentice Lacy, Mrs. Walter Phillips, Mrs. Thomas Vernon and Mrs. Robert Walk.
70 YEARS AGO — 1949
Two Lake Township Vocational Agriculture students were honored during F.F.A. Week at Pennsylvania State College where 1,200 young farmers, gathered the first week of June to take part in competitive judging contests. They are John Boone and Wayne Hoover, both of Pike’s Creek. Boone received a bronze medal for his work in the poultry judging competition against 132 contestants. His was the third highest score. Hoover, taking part in the same contest, was one of nine boys who placed so high that they will go back to the college in August to take part in further competitions. Seven of the nine will be eliminated at that time and two will be picked to enter that National competitions at Ames, Iowa later in the year.
Pupils of Mrs. Bernard Whitney of Fernbrook were presented in Shavertown Methodist Church, last Thursday. There was a varied program of vocal and instrumental numbers, piano solos, duets, trios and recitations. Taking part were: Dorothy Belles, Betty Davis, Bertha Dickson, Ann Woicekowski, Barbara Woicekowski, Loretta Shank, Annjane Layou, Earlene Layou, Esther Layou, Carolyn Dickson, Nancy Dickson and Marie Stocker.
