20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Dr. Karen Boback and daughter, K.C. were both recently installed as presidents of Greater Federation of Women’s Services Clubs. Karen will preside as president of GFWC Harveys Lake. K.C. will serve her second term as president of Country Crossroads Juniorettes. Both clubs are conducting a June membership drive.

Each year the Dallas Area Federated Women’s Club presents awards to three outstanding high school art students. The winners for this year were chosen by Ms. Donahue, a Dallas Elementary Art Teacher. Receiving the awards from Jane Gritman, Art Awards Chairperson for the club, are: Matt Schweitzer, 1st place winner; Stacy Wagner, 2nd place winner and Melissa Shaver, 3rd place.

Girl Scout Troop #650m from Dallas Elementary School recently held a Mather/Daughter Tea at St. Therese’s Church in Shavertown. The girls made ceramic tiles for their mothers as favors. Troop members are: Kenslie Kerestes, Devin Lacey, Lauren Yurko, Alyssa Miller, Amanda Musto, Jackie Lowe, Katie Gilligan, Nicole Madden, Nicole Brezinski, Megan Youells and Becky Travis. Leaders are Katie Youells and Toni Madden, Senior Girl Scout Aide is Nicole Sutton.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

The Jane M. Stitzer Memorial Spelling Bee was recently held at the Dallas Middle School. The bee is held to honor the memory of Jane Stitzer, a former Art Department member. The winner was Melanie Evans, an eighth grade student. Evans outlasted participants from grades 6, 7 and 8. Runner up was Richard Sylvia, 6th grade.

Brian Kelly, an eighth-grader at Lake-Lehman Junior High School, was chosen this weekend as a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania State Select Under-14 Soccer Team. The team is chosen from youth players throughout the region in tryouts sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association.

In light of the historical events occurring in China today, the Dallas Middle School’s sixth grade World Cultures class of Mrs. Mary Ann Storz completed a special social studies unit on the Chinese. The students researched the history, culture and designed posters on Chinese lifestyle. A class discussion was conducted on the current student protests in Beijing. In addition, Mrs. Rosa Lee, wife of Mr. Eric Lee of Peking Chef Restaurants, spoke to the class on customs and gave a demonstration on Chinese writing. The week’s activities were culminated with a Chinese lunch complete with chopsticks and fortune cookies.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Harveys Lake resident and pornography kingpin Albert Morrow was reported in “fair” condition as of press time in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a reported shooting Tuesday evening at a borough tavern. According to Harveys Lake police, Morrow was shot in the head while in the Dew Drop Inn at approximately 8:15 in the evening. Police were reportedly pursuing a suspect throughout the evening following the shooting. Morrow is the second Harveys Lake pornography dealer to be shot this year. His long-time competitor John Krasner was shot and killed in February while on a visit in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The New Community Singers under the direction of Mrs. Diane Wojciechowski recently completed rehearsals for the spring season. The women have performed at several places in the Wyoming Valley including Valley Crest Nursing Home, Westmoor Church in Kingston, Parson’s Women’s Club and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown. Members of the group are: Mrs. Emily Steltz, pianist; Mrs. Vern Hoyt, Mrs. Marianne Williams, Mrs. Mary Delinski, Mrs. Irene Katyl and Mrs. Kay Sigman.

Lake-Lehman High School Principal James Nicholas recently announced the top ten honor students in the senior class. They are: Rosemary Zbick, Wendy Smith, Carol Cigarski, Suzanne Hudak, Cathy White, Pam Marr, John Amos, Doug Nichols, Larry Williams and Bonnie James.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Members of the Dallas Junior and Senior Woman’s Clubs recently held a dress rehearsal of their “Country Style” skit which they will perform at the Fete Champetre to be held at the Penn State Campus in Lehman this Friday and Saturday. Taking part on the skit are Mr. Leon Brokenshire, Mrs. Joseph Katyl, Miss Jill Sickler, Mrs. Donald Shaffer, Mrs. Charles Mahler, Mrs. Walter Davidson, Mrs. Edward Barber, Mrs. Joseph Kaminski, Mrs. John Williams, Mrs. Glenn Case, Mrs. Robert Lutz, Mrs. Robert Besecker and Mrs. Evan Bonawitz.

It’s a quarter of a century of horse shows for Lehman Township Volunteer Fire Company this July 4 and 5 and it’s going to be the biggest show yet. A country style hoe-down, the selection of a show queen, and an anniversary parade will highlight the two day event. Planning committee members include Harold Coolbaugh and Joseph Johns, general co-chairmen, Joseph Ellsworth, Edward V. Hartman, Gilbert D. Tough and Myron S. Baker.

Charles Miller of Dallas RD 1 was awarded two honors at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. He was selected for membership in the Crowfoot Society for academic excellence, and given a chevron pin with sapphire for having appeared on the Dean’s List for five semesters.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Honor students who will take part in the commencement program Wednesday evening at Lake-Lehman are Allen Swanson and Alberta Shaw. Allen, from the Lake-Noxen building, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred V. Swanson. Pursuing an academic course, he has been accepted at the Pennsylvania State University in the chemical engineering department. Alberta Shaw is the daughter of Mrs. Florence Shaw of Sweet Valley. She is in the Lehman building and expects to enter nurses training at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital.

Harry Holak, Wilkes-Barre, has purchased Earl’s Drug Store, Trucksville, from Earl Henwood and will henceforth operate the business under the firm name of Trucksville Pharmacy. Mr. Holak is a graduate of Philadelphia College of Pharmaceutical Science. Until the purchase, he was with Whalen Drug Store in Wilkes-Barre.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Wayne George Hildebrand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Hildebrand, has the distinction of being the first child baptized by Prince of Peace Church. His daddy built the Baptismal font and gave it to the new parish.

Chosen as the outstanding Home Economics student of the Senior Class, Janet Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Wright, Lehman will received the annual Julius Long Stern F.H.A. Award at the Lehman High School Commencement, tonight. The award, a gold wrist watch, has been made possible by the generosity of Julius Long Stern of Idetown, owner of the Isaac Long Store, Wilkes-Barre.
