20 YEARS AGO — 1999

The atmosphere in the courtroom was tense as the “prosecuting attorney” made “his” case to the jury. The three defendants had been charged with possession of drugs, and now it was time for a verdict. But this time there really was no crime, just a group of Boy Scouts learning firsthand about the American justice system. Scouts from Troop 281 and 693 held the mock trial at the Trucksville office of District Justice James Tupper. Scouts playing key roles in the trial included Mark Miller defense attorney), Rick Blaine (prosecutor), Tommy Van Horn (policeman), Eric Pimm (Judge), Joe Bednash (prosecutor) and Andrew Van Loon (prosecutor).

The newly formed Back Mountain Children’s Theatre Company performed songs from “Madeline’s Adventure” Last Monday in a special performance at the Back Mountain Memorial Library. Members of the company included Dana Kinter, Allison Considine, Mary Theresa Condosta, Carmella Gubbiotti, Bryn Harvey, Ashley Howell, Jillian Keller, Erin Kovalick, Christine Zavaskas and Katee Pelleschi. The group is a non-profit children’s touring company, under the direction of Gina Ackerman and Judy Harvey.

Recently, a freshman team coached by Miss Gail Meeker copped second place honors at the Honesdale Indoor Field Hockey Tournament. The Lake-Lehman team competed with 18 other teams. Team members include Kristin Ruda, Dina Sarmonis, Suzanne Pierce, Stephanie Bendik, Angela Basta, Ashley Heacock, Meg Tribendis, Joanna Oliver and Abbie Lewis.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Ben Coslett, Jeremy Moore, Eddie Krasniak and Chrissy Carboni, students in the pre-kindergarten class at Little People Day School, has fun with their spring farm project last week. They visited a local dairy farm, made butter and built birdfeeders and a 3-D farm model.

Senator Charles D. Lemmond, Jr., a member of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Board, will be one of the state legislators taking part in the ground breaking ceremonies, May 5, for the gymnasium/multipurpose building to be constructed on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus in Lehman. The senator recently met with Dr. James H. Ryan, campus executive director, and several Penn State students to examine the building plans. Students present were Saburnia Scott, Marcia McCarroll and Calvin Fields.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Jim Easton and Joyce Krivenko have been named co-chairmen of the 1979 Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction, according to Auction chairman Bill Spurlin. A resident of Idetown, Eason is married to the former Carol Ruger, owner of Carol Eason’s Beauty Salon in Dallas. Mrs. Krivenko has resided in the Back Mountain for six years. She lives with her husband Dr. Charles Krivenko in High Point Acres.

The Citizen’s Award committee met and selected Jean Hillard and Robert Cartier as this year’s Citizen’s Award winners. These two people will be honored at a dinner Wednesday at the Irem Temple Country Club. The roast beef dinner is $5 and will begin at 7 p.m.

The Kunkle United Methodist Church Women met a special meeting at the church on Thursday to honor the following members for their years of service, many of them being charter members of the society: Mrs. Dorothy Henney, Mrs. Ella Brace, Mrs. Ruby Miers, Mrs. Naomi Ashburner, Mrs. Jennie Miers, Mrs. Myrtle Hess, Mrs. Erma Ellsworth, Mrs. Agnes Elston, Mrs. Dorothea Heinen, Mrs. Arline Updyke, Mrs. Sara Kerlin, Mrs. Anna Weaver and Mrs. Anna Landon.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Kingston Township’s new Frances Slocum Park, sparkling in its appropriate setting among the shaded picnic areas and clear waters, will open to the public today. Fishermen will find the peaceful waters stocked with Bull Heads, Channel Catfish, Muskelonge, Black Bass, Wall Eyes and Pickerel. Paddle boats are an innovation this year, introduced by Dana Sickler, who holds the boat concession. One of the newest public recreation spots developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Forest and Waters, the park proved extremely popular with both those seeking the open spaces and fishermen following its opening last year.

Dallas Senior High School won second place for Youth Physical Fitness at the Marine Corps Training Center in Wyoming recently. The United States Marine Corp sponsors the program each year. Exercises consist of sit-ups, push-ups, squat-thrusts, chin-ups and a 300 yard shuttle run based on the physical training standards. Members of the Dallas team are: Raymond Yagloski, Robert Samanas, Richard Martin, Mark Hicks, James Tupper and David Merithew. The Dallas team was coached by Clinton Brobst.

Five new members were inducted into the Dallas Kiwanis Club recently, announces Merrill Faegenburg, Kiwanis Past President and Inducting Officer. New members include Rev. Paul C. Duncan of the Huntsville Christian Church; George Dunn, Dallas; William Allabaugh, Dallas; P. Jerry Pillets, Dallas; and Charles Tomasko, Orange.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Jean Fleming, daughter of Attorney and Mrs. Robert Fleming, a sixth grade student at Dallas Borough, was chosen to represent the school at the School Patrol Convention in Washington D.C. Jean is being sponsored by Wyoming Valley Automobile Association and Dallas Borough PTA.

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Ide of Oak Hill, accepted a $100.00 check from Lloyd C. Newson, national General Electric representative. The Ides won first place in the West Side Jaycees Christmas Lighting contest and were entered in the GE Corporation Home Lighting contest where they won fifth place. The Jaycees as the sponsoring organization also won a check for $100.00.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Jacqueline Mahoney, with her many attendants will reign as Queen at the May Day Festival to be given by Dallas Township High School on Thursday, May 5 at 10 a.m. Miss Mahoney was elected by Senior High School members. The all day program is in charge of Mrs. Helen Guyler, assisted by Alfred Millner Camp, Mary Vahey, Robert Dolbear and teachers of the elementary grades; Mrs. Charles Lipp and Mrs. Melvin Mosier, refreshments; Melvin Mosier, properties.

Sgt. Philip White, a member of Pennsylvania State Police who resides at Harris Hill Road, Trucksville, was elected president of the Parent Teachers’ Association at a meeting Monday evening at Shavertown Grade School. Others chosen were: Robert Lilac, vice-president; Mrs. Frank Thompson, secretary; Mrs. Robert Shotwell, treasurer.
