20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Girl Scouts from Lehman service Unit 118 gathered Saturday at the Dallas United Methodist Church for a “Girl Power” day. There were sessions on dancercise, self-defense, avoiding drugs and other topics as well as a visit from Sweet Valley veterinarian Roseanne Crisci and a Manx cat. Some of the girls participating in the day program, which was organized by Troop 662, were Sammy Stirewalt, Elizabeth Sulerice, Katie Makura, Katie Berenato and Megan Oliver.

Lake-Lehman High School recently recognized winners in the Senior High Crafts class Rice Art Competition. Winners are: 1st place, Mary Smee, junior; 2nd place, Katie Sprau, junior; 3rd place Sandy Lowery, senior; Honorable mention, Sarah Race. Craft students began rice art, a mosaic art form, in the second marking quarter. Exhibiting great patience, the student completed the tesserae project three weeks into the third marking quarter. The subject matter was selected by students.

Jim Chupka, Gate of Heaven 8th grade, recently scored hi 1,000th point for the Gators. He received a commemorative ball from Jim Keiper, coach.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Mr. Gilbert Griffiths, principal of Dallas Middle School, recently recognized 16 outstanding academic students who earned Highest Honors during the second semester. The students earned this distinction by earning straight A’s in the marking period. Those recognized were: Keith McDonald, Nina Mathers, Karen Wisnieski, Allyssa Rosentel, Marc Barbose, Eric Lehman, Scott Sobocinski, Mike Vozniak, Becky Yurko, Nicholas Sabatini, Kathleen Sallitt, Rina Fernandez, Vanessa Wysocki, Kim Jones, Quentin Reese and Kathy Delinski.

The Lake-Lehman High School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. John Milauskas, will present its annual concert on Friday April 7 and Saturday April 8 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. On Saturday night the Lehman cadet Band, directed by Mr. Jonathan Pineno, will play a series of selections. Officer of the band are: President Alan Perrego, Vice President Maryann Kasko, Secretary Michelle Phares and Treasurer Marcy Yencha.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Dallas ninth grade student Norman Bordley received five awards at the Dallas Wrestling Club’s dinner Sunday night at Irem Temple Country Club. He was awarded for most team points, most falls, most takedowns, team captain and undefeated season. Other junior high wrestlers recognized at the diner included Ed Yakabovicz, most improved; Leigh Eyet, most near fall points; Jim Cook, team captain; and Bill Rudick, fastest fall and most takedowns.

Robert Eyet, treasurer of Dallas Wrestling Club, presented a trophy to George Dombek, Dallas Junior High wrestling coach, in appreciation of his 20 years of service of the Dallas School’s wrestling program. Dombek introduced wrestling to the Dallas School District.

In recognition of the coming springtime, Dallas Senior High School will present William Shakespeare’s comedy-fantasy A Midsummer Night’s Dream on April 6 and 7 in the school auditorium. A perfect remedy to winter blahs, this production includes fairy sprites love struck mortals, clumsy country bumpkins and, of course, immortal lines. Stage Manager is Chip Morgan, and Costume Designer is Susan Carey. The cast includes Karen Thompson, Alice Baloga, Wendy Baird, Nathan Faut, Pam Carey, Jill Crompton and Bonnilyn Vail.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Miss Jane Mitchell, a 1968 graduate of Dallas Senior High School, was elected first vice president of the Student Government Association at Geisinger Medical Center School of Nursing, where she is a first year student.

Members of the Lake-Lehman PT-A will conduct a Rummage Sale on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Daniel C. Roberts Fire Hall at Harveys Lake. The proceeds will go toward the annual Band-Athletic Banquet which I s also sponsored by the local PT-A. Anyone having rummage may call the following members: Mrs. Judy Dawe, Lehman; Mrs. Carl Swanson, Lake; Mrs. Catherine Fry, Oakhill and Idetown; Mrs. Grace Fielding, Jackson; and Mrs. Allen Kitchen, Noxen.

Fifty-five Cadette Girl Scouts – Dallas Neighborhood, attended an overnight at Camp Joy Lowe last month. The girls planned the outing by selecting menus, shopping, budgeting, making Kaper Charts and planning activities. The purpose of the outing was to become acquainted with Cadette Scouts from the four troops in the area. Troops 649, 655 639 and 648 participated. Elaine Kuhn, Carl Schmidt and D’Anne Cooper, senior scouts, taught songs and games.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

The male lead in the current Little Theatre production, “Monique,” which started last night at the Community Center on North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, is a Trucksville Gardens man, Don Law. Mr. Law, a personable young man in real life as well as on the stage, is a graduate of King’s College. His wife is a Misericordia College graduate, who substitutes in local schools. There is a small boy, Greg, five years old. Mr. Law’s business connection is with Robert Weaver in the Clay Products Company.

Six students of Westmoreland High School and two students from Lake-Lehman jointure participated in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Heart Association Contest March 21 at Lake-Lehman School. From Westmoreland were Joan Hand, Naomi Holtzman, Donna Garinger, Donna Weeden, Beth Weiss and Mary Jane Jurista. From Lake-Lehman were Robert Rogers and Thomas Evans. Students taking the test had previously passed elimination contest tests.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Meade J. McMillen, Shavertown, has been elected president of Dallas Rotary Club. Other officers elected are: Donald J. Evans, vice president; Dan G. Robinhold, treasurer; and Don Ide, secretary. James Gross was elected sergeant-at-arms.

Several girls and their advisors will attend the fourth annual state convention of the Pennsylvania Future Homemakers of America in York today and tomorrow. They are Grace Barall, voting delegate, and Mary Alice Lewis of Lehman and Marjorie Wolfe, voting delegate, and Treva Traver of Lake Township. Their advisors, Miss Ruth Shellhamer and Miss Margaret Lukasavage accompanied them.
