20 YEARS AGO — 1999

As part of “Good Health Month,” parents, staff and students at Trucksville Nursery School whipped up some healthy meals. 3-year-olds made biscuits, young 4-year-olds made fruit salad and 4-year-olds made enough vegetable soup to feed the whole school with some left over for the Saint Vincent dePaul Soup Kitchen. Some of the students who joined in the fun were: Casey Barrett, Bethany Dennis, Amelia Jenkins, Amanda Dembowski, Christie Conway, Devon Phillips, Elizabeth Hoover, Casey Conway, Mark Westfield and Miranda Dembowski.

Kristin Kolesar of Harveys Lake, a junior at Wyoming Seminary, met with Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski, during her visit to Washington, D.C. in February to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference, a non-profit, non-partisan leadership program in the nation’s capital that offers young people an opportunity to discuss major issues of the day with the men and women who shape the country’s policies and laws.

Students in Mrs. Ellen Boyer’s sixth grade reading class at the Dallas Middle School recently completed a unit on poetry. The highlight of the lesson was a dramatic presentation. Students memorized and presented poems written by their favorite authors. The following student chose modern poet Shel Silverstein as their Favorite: Sara Greensberg, Ashley Wolanski, Samantha Decker and Nikki Gelso.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Victor E. Matthews, a senior at Dallas High School, will represent Dallas at the Region IV Chorus this weekend at Montoursville High School. Victor is a Bass II. While there, Victor will compete for states. Victor is the son of Victor Sr. and Marcia Matthews of Trucksville.

Dallas Middle School health classes, under the direction of Ms. Robyn Jones, are involved with bringing community resource people into the classroom to speak about contemporary social issues. Recently the Victim’s Resource Center provided a presentation to the middle school seventh grade health classes on child sexual abuse. The presenters were Mrs. Ruth Aqua and Mr. Louis Catina. Class members who welcomed the speakers were: Lindy Berlew and Phil Fuller, Bill Bullock.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

A fashion show for the benefit of the Back Mountain Memorial Library is scheduled for March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Irem Temple Country Club. Mother and daughter models to be featured at the show include Mrs. Nancy Brown, Mrs. Jule Wilkins, Tish McCarthy, Marci Brown, Mrs. Mary Jule McCarthy and Mrs. Nancy Eckert. The show is presented in cooperation with the Kay Regan Shop of Wilkes-Barre. An ultra-suede dress will be awarded as a door prize for the event.

During Back Mountain Kiwanis Club’s third anniversary breakfast last week new members were inducted. They are: Pete George, Eric Weber and David Scott.

Greg Dunazusky, representative of Martin-Senour Paint Company, Chicago, demonstrated the basic fundamental of refinishing a car for the power technician course at Dallas Senior High School on Thursday. Using one of the student’s cars for the demonstration, the class was shown proper sanding, priming and sealing procedures and how to refinish a car with an acrylic enamel. They were also shown the proper use of a spray gun. Participants in instructor Russ Owens’ class included Dave Turpack, Rick Frederickson, Jerry Gryskevich, Alan Gordon, Snake O’Donnell, Keith Calkins, Dan Krispin, Jim Starbuck, Neal Yerabeck, John Harper, Jeff Sodrosky, Tom Reese, Jerry Kolman, Terry Harvey, Hack Bohon, Mike Kapral and Jim Keller.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

The Junior Class of Dallas Senior High School will present its annual play at the high school auditorium at 8 this Friday and Saturday evenings. Donald F. Hopkins is directing “I Remember Mama,” assisted by Robert Bauman, student director, and Nancy Hughes, stage manager. This year’s presentation is a memory play in which “Mama” wisely and warmly helps her family through the difficult years of growing up. Members of the cast are: Debbie Fader, Dave Ratcliffe, Ernie Gelb, Linda Colovas, Judy Allen, Sue Owens, Scott Saffian, Elaine Friedman, Debbie Kapral, Bill Guyett, Chris Rubino, John Harowitz, Virginia Jenkins, Michael Breakstone, Sharon Musto, Curtis Britt, Carol Shaskin, Laura Menzel, Duane Sprau, Debbie Anderson and Debbie Hartman.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ward are instructing Cadet Girl Scout Troop 649 on aviation. Trips taken have included attendance at a Civil Air Patrol meeting conducted by Air Force Squadron Commander Lieutenant Alex Sherinski at the Air Force Reserve Building in Forty Fort and a visit to the Wyoming Valley Airport in Forty Fort with tour by Mr. Eugene Schleinger, Manager, and a ride in an airplane over the Dallas and Wilkes-Barre area. Upon completion of requirements, the following girls will receive the aviation badge: Melanie Albert, Debbie Bulford, Megan Delaney, Fern Egliskas, Diane Masoner, Ellen Parker, Chrisan Pyle, Nancy Rinehimer, Jenni Rhodda, Elaine Ward, Lynne Wasserott and Edith Wilson.

Three Dallas Middle School students were among the Wyoming Valley Motor Club and Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis sponsored safety poster contest winners. They are: Dottie Anthony, honorable mention, Dallas Elementary; Gale Young, honorable mention, Shavertown Elementary; and Clare McCarthy, second place winner, Dallas Elementary.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

The Key Club and tri-Hi-Y Club of Westmoreland High School combined efforts on Sunday afternoon and canvassed the homes in the Back Mountain area for the “Heart Fund Drive.” The Key Club committee, William Steinhauer, Robert Bullock and Ronald Trewern, met every day during the week to map out the streets to be canvassed and the students had no difficulty knowing what routes they were assigned.

Mrs. Raymond Daring was winner in the fashion show contest sponsored by the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club held at the Library Annex Tuesday night. She will represent the club at the County Show at Hotel Sterling next Wednesday.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Dallas Township PTA will sponsor a hobby show in the high school building on Monday, March 21. The Home economics Farm Bureau will display all available materials and classes of hobbies. Persons wishing to display hobbies will kindly get in touch with Mrs. Jean Mitchell, Mrs. Mildred Pruett, Mrs. Arline Evans, Mrs. Dorothy Hislop, Mrs. Mary Hartman, Mrs. Minnie Sidorek, Mrs. Eleanor Barnes, Mrs. Iona Davis, Mrs. Catherine Mulcey or Mrs. Helen Evans.

Cris Eipper says that he has seen no robins or blue birds, but fifty ducks stopped at his place for an hour’s swim and then headed north. Whether Cris has seen them or not, dozens of residents have called the Post to say that they have robins and some blue birds in their yards.
