20 YEARS AGO — 1998

Ryan Warner, winner of the 6th Grade Spelling Bee and Joshua Wysocki, runner-up were presented with plaques at the Annual Awards Day Program held recently at Lehman-Jackson Elementary School.

Alison M. Taroli, 13, of Dallas, will star in the Pocono Playhouse’s production of “The Little Mermaid” on August 22 and 29. Alison has been performing since she was seven years old and has lead roles in the Northeast Players, the Showcase Theatre, Music Box Dinner Theatre, and supporting roles in the Wilkes-Barre Little Theater and in Diva Productions in Scranton. Alison is the daughter of Atty. and Mrs. Garry S. Taroli of Dallas and is in the eighth grade at Gate of Heaven School.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Members of Dallas High School football team assisted Coach Ted Jackson and his mini-football coaches during a three-day football camp last week. Sixty-one boys, ranging in age from seven to 12 years, participated in the camp at Dallas High School practice field. The players assisting the coaches included Chris Lesjack, Matt Buss, Clark Van Orden, Tony Nazden, Phil George, Ron Post, Jay Cherup, Scott Starbuck, Bob Barbacci, Joe Piskorik, Corey Sands, Eroy Yurko, Jerry Ogurkis, Jay Straigis, Shawn Ruth, Scott Horoshko, Scott Rostock and Terry Joyce.

Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from Lake-Noxen Elementary School recently received Mathematics Awards for outstanding achievement in the Pennsylvania Mathematics League contest and the Continental Mathematics contest. Award winners are: Amber Tarreto, Jeff Kunkle, Brian Weaver, Geoffrey Engle, Michelle Nallon, Jessica Noon, Karen Kocher, Gretchen Dershimer, Ann Marie Barber, Jenifer Hollos, Larry Lucarino, Christy Jo Welter and Mike Ruger.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

Weight Watchers International is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. The Dallas class was formed in 1968 and meets every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Fino’s drug store. Last month, the Dallas class lost 275 ¾ lbs., accumulative loss 0f 23,382 ½ lbs. since 1968. Among the lifetime members of the class are Virginia Ricci – who lost 50 lbs.; Carolyn Straka – who lost 30 lbs.; Pat Sandstrom – who lost 60 lbs.; and Sr. M. Evangelist Toole – who lost 50 lbs. Lecturer Myrtle Karl has lost 35 lbs. and has been at goal weight for 5 years.

Billy Mathers, 55-lb. wrestler, Trucksville, placed second in the Grand National Freestyle Wrestling Championships at Lincoln, Neb., last weekend. The son of Mr. and Mrs. William “Hap” Mathers Jr., Cliffside Avenue, Billy is a member of the Back Mountain Wrestling Club and has won numerous medals and trophies over the past few years.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

Mabel Jones, 23 Orchard Street, Trucksville, has retired from Commonwealth Telephone Company after 15 years of service with the utility. Mrs. Jones operated the official P.A.B.X. switchboard at Company headquarters, 100 Lake Street, Dallas, at the time of her retirement. Commonwealth officials and coworkers honored her recently at a luncheon at Irem Temple Country Club. She was presented with a gift by Betty Hutchison.

The fun and adventure of camping outdoors is being enjoyed these days by many Girl Scouts throughout the Penn’s Woods Council. Several girls from the Back Mountain areas are presently participating in the first session of Established Camping at Camp Onawandah, Eatonville near Tunkhannock. Participants are Ellen Parker, Dallas RD1; Meg Hall, Shavertown; Fern May Egliskis, Dallas; Megan Delaney, Dallas; Debra Sue Bulford, Dallas; Helen DeMarco, Trucksville; Terri Rudick, Trucksville; Cathy Stellas, Dallas; and Mary Ann DeMarco, Trucksville.

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

Thomas E. Reese, Franklin Street, Dallas, was elected Commander of Daddow Isaac American legion Post 672 Tuesday evening, succeeding Gordon F. Mathers III. Mr. Reese, a 1943 graduate of Dallas Borough High School, saw service in the Navy from 1943-1946. He and the former Martha Hadsall, a graduate of Dallas Township High School, were married that same fall. Tom is associated with his father, Thomas G. Reese in the Glenview Coal Supply business located across Main Street from the Library.

One of the most colorful features of this year’s Library Auction was the variety of livestock offered. None was more appealing than a pony colt and its mother which was won by Tony Gould of Elston & Gould. It was young bidders, however, who stole the show when peacocks, puppies, ponies and a tiger skin went across the block.

Thomas Williams, one of the blonde six-foot two-inch twins who drives for Acme Stores, Inc. has recently won the award for driving 416,000 accident-free miles in seventeen years, a record which makes him eligible for the tri-State competition of truck drivers scheduled for some time in September in Trenton, N.J. Each day he puts in mileage over a radius of 100 miles from the Acme warehouse in Forty Fort. Up to date, he has not scratched a fender.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

Kingston Township Schools will conduct a band school during August, directed by Verus M. Weaver, Supervisor of Music. All students and alumni who are interested in music will be eligible to participate. The schedule includes group and individual instruction on all instruments, band rehearsals, a beginner’s instrumental group, and one day each week for those interested in baton twirling.

Confidence Class of Idetown Methodist Church will hold a Country Fair on the Shaver lawn August 6. Mrs. Harold Donnelly is chairlady assisted by the following: Mrs. Harvey Bottoms, flower and plant booth; Mrs. Russel Dodds, candy; Mrs. Al Rinken, fancy work; Mrs. Howard Boice, vegetables; Mrs. Glenn Spencer, hot dogs and hamburgers; Mrs. Claire McKenna, fish
