At a recent awards ceremony held at the Dallas Middle School the William W. Kubis Award was presented. The award is presented annually to the Dallas Middle School student who exemplifies a positive attitude toward the responsibilities inherent in being a good student and citizen. The award recipient for this academic year was Chris P. Arnaud an eighth grade student. The winner is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Arnaud of Dallas.
T.J. Amico, of Kingston Township is currently participating in the 1998 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington, D.C. T.J., in the class of 1999 at Dallas High School, is among 350 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across America who have attained the qualifications required to participate in the Forum. T.J. was selected because of his outstanding academic achievement and his interest in the profession of medicine.
30 YEARS AGO — 1988
Four sixth grade students at Lake-Noxen Elementary School recently received Academic Awards. The awards were given to the outstanding student in five subjects. Winners are: Amber Tarreto, Science Award; Michael Ruger, Math and Computer Science Awards; Jennifer Hollos, Language Arts Award; and Cristy Shamus, Social Studies Award.
Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services announced the winners recently of its sixth annual essay contest, and three Back Mountain students were among those honored for writing against drug abuse. Seventh grader Ronnie Moses, Dallas Junior High School; Laura Cashore, Gate of Heaven, Dallas; and High School Junior Katherine Andrew, Bishop Hoban High School, won honors for their respective age groups from over one thousand essay entries.
Jason Gearhart, Eagle Scout candidate, Boy Scout Troop 4, Lake Silkworth, recently completed his Eagle Scout Service Project requirement by leading his troop in assisting the Auxiliary of The Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, with their annual Flea Market on the Pond event that benefits residents at the center. Under Jason’s leadership, posters announcing the event were distributed, items were collected for sale at the troop’s booth, and the scouts worked in shifts throughout the day in several areas.
40 YEARS AGO — 1978
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman G. Hefft, Carverton Road, Wyoming, observed their 40th wedding anniversary last Sunday, July 16th. They were married in 1938 by the Rev. Charles Gilbert in Carverton Methodist Church. The Heffts are parents of four children: Mrs. John M. (Elfriede) Turner, Shavertown; Mrs. Joseph M. (Gretchen) Miller, Greenbelt, Md.; Miss Lenchen J. Hefft, Gettysburg; and Milton Sherman Hefft, a senior at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park.
The seven and eight year old girls were the youngest participants in the Dallas High School Cheerleaders Clinic held last week at the school. Coming through the clinic with flying colors were Amie Mathers, Sandy Hanson, Rosemary Hometchko, Karen Tabor, Randi Harvey, Allyson Lukasavage, Tricia Adams and Heidi Strazdus.
50 YEARS AGO — 1968
Movie actors from the cast of The Mollie Maguires, now being filmed in this county, enjoyed the 22nd annual Library Auction as guests of the Dallas people whose home adjoins the Auction grounds. Their hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan L. Weir, of 95 Huntsville Road, who contributed the use of their garage and yard to the event. The actors and actresses circled around the auction grounds and made many purchases. Among the guests were Ian Abercrombie, Scotland; J. P. Burns, Ireland; Louise Loughran, Australia; John Orchard and Kathy De Noto, both of England.
St. Ann’s Altar Society of St. Andrew’s Eastern Orthodox Church of Dallas will hold a bake sale on Saturday at Sandy Bottom, Harvey’s Lake. A large variety of baked goods will be available. Chairman and co-chairman for the event are Mrs. Frank Lengyel and Mrs. Michael Brin, respectively.
60 YEARS AGO — 1958
Tommy Gauntlett pitched a no-hit game against Trucksville last Tuesday. Tommy has pitched twelve innings this season for the Dallas Little League Team sponsored by Lazarus Department Store.
The ceiling at Boyd White’s fell in on Ray Titus Wednesday afternoon at 2. Ray thought he was paralyzed when a big chunk of plaster hit his shin, but feeling returned after he had sent for help from Billy Berti. His left arm was struck violently, but no bones broken. A big waste can close by was caved in by the crash.
Becky Button had beginners luck at Sharbot Lake last week, landing a seven pound and a five and a half pound pike with live bait in rough water that discourages most fishermen. Miss Button, a member of Lehman-Jackson-Ross faculty, drove to Canada to spend a day with the Lester Squiers. She spent three days, and was separated with difficulty from her fishing rod.
Third annual Garden Party and Tea of the Dallas Women of Rotary will be held Tuesday at 2 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Charles W. Lee, Country Club Road, West Dallas. In case of rain it will be held at Dallas Township High School. Mrs. Floyd Chamberlain is chairman assisted by Mrs. Donald Evans, Mrs. Oswald Griffiths, Mrs. David Williams and Mrs. Lee.
Herman Garinger of Alderson has reason to be proud of the purchase he made at last week’s library auction. Herman bought the 600-pound boar hog, given by Col. Henry Pool, for $50. On Tuesday, he loaded the hog on his truck and took it off to the Nicholson Auction where he sold it for $106. Mr. Garinger’s confidence in the auction committee was well placed for he bought the pig without seeing it and only from the auctioneer’s description. There were many others who obtained similar bargains.
