20 years ago – 1995

Recently students in Dallas Middle School participated in an Earth Day poster contest with the theme Save Water, sponsored by the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority. Winners received savings bonds. Winners are: 6th grade, Randa Shanin, first place girls; Dan Laurenzi, first place boys; 8th grade, Marcus Sowcik, runner-up and Colleen Murphy, second place.

Marina Knappman’s artwork will be displayed in the lobby of the Mellon Bank, Main Street, Dallas, throughout June. Knappman, who has worked in all fine art drawing and painting media, has studied art for the past nine years with Sue Hand.

Four Back Mountain students taking Spanish at Bishop O’Reilly High School in Kingston have earned awards in the 1995 National Spanish Examination, held recently at King’s College. Winners are: Alma DeRojas, Level 01 first place and trophy recipient, Dallas; Kristen Bednarek, 11th place, Level 01, Dallas; Gussie Malpass, 11th place, Level II, Shavertown; and Erin Stair, 11th place, Level II, Trucksville.

30 years ago – 1985

“Butterscotch,” a prize hare of Hughes’ Hilltop Hoppers, hopped right into first place last month in competition in Harford, Pa. Wayne and Ellen Hughes, the proud owners of the rabbit, said she took the first prize for the Best of Breeds in the French lop-eared category, beating out 85 other hopeful hoppers. According to a recent news release, raising rabbits for fun or profit is becoming a favorite American pastime – one that the Hughes family has recently begun to pursue.

Betsy Dukes, Dallas, portrays Steffy in the King’s College Theatre Department production of Neil Simon’s “I Ought To Be In Pictures” to be performed this weekend and next in the auditorium located in the college’s Administration Building.

40 years ago – 1975

The 17th Annual Commencement of Lake-Lehman High School was held earlier this month at Irem Temple Country Club. John Zaleskas, Assistant Principal, presented awards to eight graduates. Marjorie Wolensky and Brenda Edwards, academic awards for achieving the highest and second highest scholastic averages respectively in the academic field; Ann SanFanandre and Darlene Whitesell, Business Education Awards for achieving the highest averages in the business field; Harold Cornell, craftsmanship, scholastic average, and citizenship in the industrial arts field; Marjorie Wolensky and Daniel Yankowski, Citizenship Awards; Jayne Zaleskas, craftsmanship, ability, attitude and cooperation in home economics.

The “half day” session of the Sandy Beach Nursery recently visited the Daniel C. Roberts Fire Company, Harveys Lake. Mrs. Millie Hanson, president of the women’s auxiliary, assisted by Mrs. Carol Sorber, gave the three and four year olds a tour. Children on the tour: Bobby Hanson, Brian Sorber, Leesa Sorber, David Davies and David Robbins.

50 years ago – 1965

Miss Carol Pope, Roushey Street, Shavertown, entertained at a Stork Shower Sunday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Joseph Tondora, the former Phyllis Pope. Present were Mesdames Thomas Covert, Denton Updyke, Stephen Doroskewicz, George Trudgeon, Spencer Holmgren, Frank Tondora, Wilson Honeywell, Kenneth Trudgeon, James Trudgeon, Bryce Lewis, Andrew Chewy, Seth Howell, Floyd Pope, Philip Pope, Misses Mary Tondora, Earlene Layaou and Marlene Ulitchny.

Mrs. Allan Major and Mrs. Forrest Kunkle, retiring teachers, were honored by over a hundred administrators, teachers and guests at the annual retirement banquet held by the Lake Lehman Area employees at the Country club last Wednesday.

The Fine Arts Fiesta Children’s Sidewalk Art Exhibit in Wilkes-Barre was of special significance to five Dallas Area Elementary School children. In the five year old group, Deborah Ann Whithey received honorable mention for her felt pen drawing. In the six-seven age group, Michele Cybulski received first prize for her crayon drawing. In the eight-nine year old group, Carol Duffy received first prize for her crayon drawing. Honorable Mentions went to two students in the eight-nine year old age group, Cynthia Witek and Karen Carey.

60 years ago – 1955

Christian Friendly Class of Huntsville Christian Church will hold a strawberry and ice cream social on Thursday. All ice cream is homemade and cake and coffee will be served. Chairman is Mrs. Arline Covert assisted by Mrs. Evelyn Roberts and Mrs. Irma Culp.

Eight wins and two losses put Lehman-Jackson-Ross at the top of the Back Mountain Baseball heap this spring. The championship was decided at a playoff game last Friday at Dallas-Franklin high School memorial Athletic field, when Lehman defeated Tunkhannock 4 to 1. The champs are Bob Radinovitch, Bob Stash, Ray Harned, Bert Balliet, John Ruda, Steve Andrasko, Wayne Moss, John Stolarick, Charles Hoyt, Richard Lincoln, Larry Wolfe, Alfred Pecukonis, Ferris Roberts, Glenn Rittenhouse, Paul Malak, Bob Sholtis, Bill Lopasky, Lester Lynn and Jim Rogers.

70 years ago – 1945

Laketon F.F.A. entertained their fathers at a banquet in the high school auditorium last Thursday. The food was prepared by their mothers and served by the women of the faculty and the high school girls. Herman Kern, accompanied by Denton Treefry, furnished the entertainment. Short talks were given by Calvin McHose, Walter Roberts, James Hutchinson, N.E. Newcomer and Ray Henney.

Carverton Girl Scout Troop Committee entertained the Scouts and their mothers at a tea in the Carverton Methodist Church Monday evening. Mrs. Leon Manard was invested as Brownie Leader. Attendees included Mrs. Edgar Sutton, Dora, Phyllis and Sue Sutton, Mrs. Louis Harris, Joan and Jane Harris, Mrs. Alfred Scureman, Helen Scureman, Mrs. Dana Sickler, Lois and Gloria Sickler, Mrs. Almon Altemus, Mrs. Richard Prynn, Mrs. George Kromelbein, Mrs. Harold Dixon Jr., Mrs. Manard, Joan Sickler and Dorothy Ann Edwards.
