20 YEARS AGO — 1998

Sixteen-year-old Ashley Feldman of Shavertown knows that kids like to ride bikes. So, she’s doing everything she can to make sure that’s exactly what they get to do. Ashley has rejuvenated Bikes for Tikes, a small program that she and her two older sisters started about eight years ago. They collected used bikes, clean them up and donate them to various service organizations. Although her two sisters are now out of college, Ashley thought it was a worthwhile project to start up again.

Elizabeth Gardner, a dance student of tap, jazz, funk, ballet and pantomime with Bob and Kris Oberst, owners and directors of Back Mountain Dance Studio, Dallas, recently competed at the Calvacade of Stars Talent Exposition in Somerset, NJ. Competing in solo categories, Beth received a bronze medal in tap, silver medals in photogenic, funk and novelty, and a gold medal in pantomime. Beth is a third grade student at Gate of Heaven, Dallas.

Back Mountain Blues soccer player Harry Flack of Dallas met US National Team and NY/NJ Metro Star defender Alexi Lalas in the locker room at Giants stadium prior to the Metro Stars game with the LA Galaxy earlier this month. Harry was one of the 145 soccer fans from the Back Mountain who attended the game.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Back Mountain Baseball Inc. and Dallas Kiwanis Club kicked off its fundraising project this past weekend by distributing containers for “Pennies for Baseball” to Back Mountain business places. Among the Kiwanis who participated in the distribution were Bob Dolbear, Reese Pelton, Bill Kalinowski and Joe Grimes.

The Dallas Junior High School Student Council recently participated in the annual Daffodil Days campaign. The Student Council had sales which resulted in a contribution of $217 to the local unit of the American Cancer Society. Among the students preparing the daffodils for distribution to their classmates were Adilyn James, Melissa Makara and Michelle Glomb.

At the 1988 Pennsylvania District Key Club Convention, the Lake-Lehman Key Club was awarded the second place trophy for achievement in the bronze division. Officer certificates were presented to President Joanne Kelly and Treasurer Rebecca Roskos. In addition, Rebecca placed second in the statewide talent competition.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

There are plenty of homemakers in the Back Mountain as was indicated by the huge crowd who turned out for the Dallas Post Homemakers School last week at Dallas Junior High School. Hundreds of door prizes as well as the foods prepared by Debbie Rasmussen were given away to members of the audience.

Coming soon on May 5 and 6 will be the musical production of “Once Upon A Mattress” presented by the Lake-Lehman High School chorus. This year’s cast consists of many new actors and actresses who will make their debut for the first time. Amongst the cast are: Lisa Twardowski, Ed Chesnovitch, Lee Ann Wesley, Don Rubel, Mark Derwin, Keith Davis and Wendy Hall.

Eight Lake-Lehman High School girls were honored by the Harveys Lake Women’s Service Club for their outstanding scholastic and community development. Honored were: Renee Yascellis, Cathy Smith, Kathleen Stefanowicz, Ann Marie Mark, Sheryl Whitesell, Marcia Januzek, Jill McCarroll and Valerie Stefanowicz.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

Boy Scout Troop 281, Dallas Methodist Church, held a Court of Honor and covered-dish supper last week in the social rooms of the church. An Eagle Award, highest in scouting, was bestowed on Gary Kostrobala, who has earned 21 merit badges. Gary, 13, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Kostrobala, Dallas.

Two girls won the John Philip Sousa Band Award at Lake-Lehman. Presentation took place Saturday night, the final night of the Lake-Lehman Band Concert. Joann Wesoloski and Kathleen Price took the honors this year.

S. Kerr Smith, a junior at Wyoming Seminary, won the annual Declamation Contest held recently in Nelson Memorial Chapel. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph S. Smith, Dallas, he represented the Athenian Society. Mr. Smith presented Mark Twain’s version of “An Encounter with an Interviewer.”

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

Three men in a boat lost a hat, their fishing gear, and came within a breath of losing their lives yesterday morning at 11 at Harveys Lake when their small craft upset in rough water 300 yards from shore. Mrs. Milton Franks, Pole 170, heard cries for help, rushed to the dock, started her motor boat, and with the aid of Leo Kalinowski, a man laying carpets in her home, managed to tow the three men ashore.

Mrs. Martin Hewett, president of Kings’ Daughters Class, Shavertown Methodist Church, has named Mrs. Wilbur Lawry and Mrs. Budd Hirleman as co-chairmen for their twenty-fourth annual garden party. The affair will be held on June 24 at the home of Mrs. Abram Nesbitt, Lake Catalpa.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

Junior class of Dallas Township High School will present a three-act comedy, “A Mind of Her Own,” tonight in the high school auditorium. In the lead roles are Bob Henney, Mariella Sullivan, Gladys Pudhoe and Bill Henninger. Other members of the cast are: David Parsons, Nancy Diebert, Irene Wilson, Betty Vavrek, Charlotte Peeke, Donald Evans, Florence Tondora, Bart Zimmerman and Jacqueline Mahoney.

Lake Township alumni will present a farce in three acts, “Love Your Neighbor,” in the Laketon High School auditorium tonight. Taking part are Arnold Garinger, Hilda Leinthall, Jean Balantine, John Bronson, Reba Maccolatian, Esther Armitage, Dolores Dennis, Ruth Williams, Kenneth Davis, Robert Payne, Dick Williams, Pauline Davis, Virginia Swanson, Bernard Rogers, Robert Avery, Ferne Smith, Nellie Kitchen and Leah Sickler.
