20 YEARS AGO — 1998

“Mr. Electric” visited students at Dallas Elementary last week, to demonstrate the principles of electricity. Students participating in demonstrations included Lauren Murgatroyde, Kristen Justice, Joey Pretko and Kevin Norris.

The Flower Show Committee of the Back Mountain Bloomers Garden Club is planning the 1998 Northeastern Pennsylvania Flower Show, which will be held May 1-3 at the 109th Field Artillery Armory, Kingston. All proceeds benefit the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Members of the committee are: Linda Thoma, Roxanne Schulman, Barbara Turner, Lora Freifeld, Jane Nakkache, Claudia Banks, Louise Mattas, Linda Day, Marlyne Lipfert, Janet Flack, Jan Jost, Mike Burchie and Mae Rome.

Tom Reese, representing the Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post 672, presented a new flag to Martha Butler, director of the Back Mountain Memorial Library.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Sally Shea is co-chairwoman of Daffodil Days by the Wyoming Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society. During Daffodil Days, which run from March 21-27, the “Flower of Hope” is being sold by volunteers for $3.50 a bunch. Mrs. Shea and her husband Charles and children Matthew and Molly live in Shavertown.

C-Tec Corporation recently awarded Marie T. Lacek for outstanding performance during 1987. The company recognized Lacek and 10 other employees for their accomplishments during the year. Lacek is a manager of special projects at Commonwealth Telephone Company, a subsidiary of C-Tec, and has been employed by the Company since 1978. She resides at Harveys Lake.

Dallas High School’s 1987 Varsity baseball team was the recipient of the Frank Pisarchik Sportsmanship Award given annually by the PIAA Wyoming Valley Umpires Chapter to the team exemplifying sportsmanship and good attitude. In eight years, no player or coach was ejected from a Dallas game and it is the second time in school history that the team has received the award. Coach is Jack Wolensky.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

Rose Sutcavage, chairman of the Dallas Junior Women’s Club craft contest, announced that judges selected the contest winners last month at her home. Judges for the contest were Robbin Rogers, home economics teacher, Lake-Lehman; Mrs. Darling Sickler, home economics teacher, Lake-Lehman; and Mrs. Mary Ann Wolensky, ceramic shop owner.

Members of Mrs. Ellen Boyer’s ninth grade German class, Dallas Township High School, took part in the King’s College Foreign Language Festival earlier this month. Suzanne Santarelli, Nancy Marchlinski and Pam Krispin sang German folk songs and Suzanne played the guitar. Other members of the class did an exhibit of various German legends.

Angels – well, that’s the name of the showgirls in the cast of Anything Goes, but their behavior is not altogether “angelic” as they fill the stage with song and dance when they accompany Reno Sweeney on the cruise in the Dallas Senior High School musical comedy. Playing the showgirls are: Cindy Steinkirchner, Lee Ann Curtis, Suzanne Williams and Roya Fahmy.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

A young man from Dallas will accompany the Lehigh University Glee Club on its nine-day vacation and concert tour of Puerto Rico. Scott Alexander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Alexander of Pioneer Avenue is one of sixty members of the choral group which will leave tomorrow for the trip. The glee club will perform major concerts, for which members have prepared selections in Spanish, for appearances in San Juan, Ponce and Mayaguez.

Robert A. Griffith of Trucksville, Hallmark Art Contest winner, and Kay Noolan Kale, Dallas Art Contest winner, were presented monetary awards at a recent meeting of the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club. Mr. Griffith entitled his drawing, “Charcoal Indian,” while Mrs. Kale labeled her watercolor, “Landscape.”

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

Proper methods of showing dogs and what to look for when judging were discussed at the meeting of Back Mountain Kennel Club held in the Library Annex Wednesday night. Mrs. Alva Jones showed a sable and white collie, Mrs. Edward Eber, a promising black-tan dachshund. Thomas B. Robinson was judge and Dr. William Wichs asked questions.

Brownie Troop 163 of Noxen entertained Troop 105 of Shavertown at a party at Veterans’ Hall, Noxen, Tuesday evening. Present were: Pamela Cully, Pamela Lesser, Linda Nicol, Linda Wimmer, Barbara Houck, Barbara Brown, Sharon Jones, Eleanor Jones, Judy O’Hara, Sally Otto, Susie Davis, Susan Day, Reba Heidel, Mary Louise Daley, Ida Gillespie, Mrs. Lee Hauck, Mrs. Jack Appel and Mrs. Walter Andrews.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

John Fowler Sr. of Orange recently exhibited four Modern Game Bantams at the New York Poultry Exposition in the New York Armory where he won three firsts, one second and an American Bantam Association Award. Mr. Fowler is a life member of the American Poultry Association, a member of the American Game Bantam Association and a member of the American Bantam Association. He has exhibited his Bantams at leading shows in all parts of the United States and Canada.

Miss Peggy Davis was installed as president and Mrs. Alva Eggleston, vice-president, at the meeting of Dallas Junior Woman’s Club recently. Other officers: second vice-president, Roberta Quaill; secretary, Mrs. John Jewell; assistant secretary, Doris Mae Hontz; treasurer, Miss Rita Cummings; assistant treasurer, Mrs. Stanley Shewan; and corresponding secretary, Mrs. Robert Garris.
