20 years ago — 1995

Kelly Lenahan, a fifth grade student from Dallas, recently had an opportunity which she’ll be able to tell her grandchildren about. She met President and Mrs. Clinton when they visited Scranton for the dedication of their godchild, Zachary Rodham. Kelly’s uncle, attorney Patrick Rogan, had received an invitation to the ceremony and reception and was allowed to bring one guest. Naturally he invited his favorite niece.

Recently the gifted students from Dallas Middle School attended the renaissance faire in Mt. Hope, PA and competed against other middle school pupils in various contests throughout the day. They won awards in every event that they entered. The aim of the heraldry contest was to design a banner reflecting the school’s philosophy. The banner, designed by the team of Matt Eyet, Shana Baker, Andrew George, John Bednarz, Lindsay Carpenter, Bethany Brown, Emily Fritz and Seth Yeager placed second in the competition.

30 years ago — 1985

David Mathers of Trucksville was presented with the Eagle Scout Award, the highest award in Scouting, during Eagle ceremonies held Sunday evening at the Trucksville United Methodist Church Educational Building. For his Eagle Project, avid collected food, paper products and cash for the Salvation Army.

Frosting Friends of Luzerne County recently held its Second Annual Cake decorating Contest in Wilkes-Barre. Barbara Regan of Harveys Lake took many high honors including the People’s Choice and Decorator’s First place awards.

Elections were held during Cadette Troop 706 regular weekly meeting and the following girls were elected as officers: Jennifer Cook, president; Megan Lukasavage, vice president; and Amber Roese, secretary.

40 years ago — 1975

Miss Jenni Rodda, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Rodda of Dallas, is a charter officer of a new campus chapter of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. organized at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa.

Hess’s of Allentown will present its eighth international fashion show sponsored by the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club on Thursday in the Dallas Junior High School Auditorium. Mrs. Daniel Lukasavage is serving as chairman and Mrs. James Richardson as co-chairman. Serving on the publicity committee is Mrs. Richard Orlowski, chairman, assisted by Mrs. Norman Gelb, Mrs. John Kennedy, Mrs. Ronald Moran and Mrs. Jerry Paxton.

50 years ago — 1965

Joy Class of Kunkle Methodist Church will have a Smorgasboard at the Brothers Four next Tuesday. Mrs. Dorothy Dodson is in charge of reservations. Heading the decorations committee are Mrs. Eunice Mitchell and Mrs. Jean Hilbert. Mrs. Lillian Glova and Mrs. Marian Searfoss will head entertainment and games.

Someone broke into the Back Mountain Memorial Library on Monday night, but got only pennies for his trouble. The thief pulled himself up on the porch roof on the lower side, reports Police Chief Russell Honeywell, broke a window, unlocked it, went inside and closed and locked the window before scraping through the downstairs to find money. He found only pennies.

Star of last Thursday’s production at the joint dinner meeting of Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs, was John Butler, the unanimous choice of all three Dallas service organizations to receive the accolade of Citizen of the Year.

60 years ago — 1955

Joseph Mundy, Shavertown, president of the Jefferson Club, was named campaign manager for area Democratic forces at last week’s meeting of Luzerne County candidates.

Women’s of Auxiliary of Harveys Lake Post, American Legion, will hold a Rummage Sale at Donald Meeker’s Store this weekend. Chairman is Mrs. Helen Wodaski; Co-Chairman, Mrs. Shirley Strohl; assisting, Mrs. Marjorie Timko, Mrs. Warren Johnson, Mrs. Mildred Bozek, Mrs. Dorothy Lutinski, Mrs. Ann Sorchak, Mrs. Leo Yanoski.

Menu for the Country Couples ham supper Saturday evening at Dallas Methodist Church includes ham, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, baked beans, cabbage salad, rolls, pie, beverage. General chairmen are Mr. and Mrs. William Baker Jr., assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Davies and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Edwards.

70 years ago — 1945

Members of the Reynolds Class of Trucksville Methodist Church will serve a roast beef supper in the Trucksville Fire Hall on election day. Committee members, Mrs. Joseph School, Mrs. John Dykeman, Mrs. William Gregory and Mrs. Ray Finney, met at the home of Mrs. Wilson Cease Tuesday to outline plans.

Charles Mahler, ordinance specialist of the 15th Air Force who was stationed in Italy for eighteen months, has been discharged from the service. While in Italy he won nine battle stars and a Presidential citation. His group made 49 missions over Germany without losing a man or a plane.

Mary Carey was elected president and Dolly Fabian, vice-president at the meeting of Girl Scouts Senior Service Troop 38 in Trucksville Fire Hall last week. Other officers chosen were Barbara Metz, treasurer, Margaret Chalker, secretary, and Betty Smith, Senior Council Representative.
