The Trustees of the Trucksville United Methodist Church will hold their fall Barbecue October 6 and 7 in the Educational Facilities on Church Road. This semi-annual event is sponsored by the trustees to assist in the maintenance of the buildings and grounds of the church. Men of the church assisting at the barbecue pit are: George Gaylord, Carl Gross, Wayne Long, Walter Pichert, Brian Baker, Jack Stephenson, William Long, Russell Johnson, Wayne Harrison and Edward Bessmer.
Back Mountain winners in the Fall Classic Open Horse Show, held last week at the Luzerne Country Fairgrounds, were: Lead Line (ages 6 and under): Emily Ashton; short stirrup over cross-rails (age 8 and under): Erin Liff; short/long stirrup over fences: Megan Ross; children’s hunter horse: Melissa Valeski; limit equitation over fences: Jocelyn Kozick; pleasure division: Melissa Valeski; and tandem hunter (Lafayette Memorial trophy): Wendy Wallo and Melissa Valeski. Points earned from this show will go toward the riders’ year-end awards through the Northeastern Pennsylvania Horse Association.
30 years ago – 1985
The Junior Class of Lake-Lehman High School conducted its annual Ring Day ceremonies on Friday. Class president, Dave Womelsdorf, gave the opening address and introduced the other class officers who commented on the markings of the ring, the intrinsic value and the future significance. John Zaleskas, high school principal, commented on the traditions of Ring Day and presented rings to the class officers who, in turn, presented rings to their classmates. Class officers are: Dave Womelsdorf, president; Susan DeGennaro, vice president; Patti Rish, secretary; and Cathy Crawford, treasurer.
Miss Susan Redmond was crowned Homecoming Queen at Lake-Lehman High School this past Saturday. Homecoming ceremonies were conducted at halftime during the Lehman/Bishop O’Reilly football game which was won by the Black Knights, 7-0. Members of the 1985 Homecoming Court are: Donna Rish, Marlo Lucas, first runner-up; Carrie Konigus, Danielle Silvetti and Traci Cigarski.
40 years ago – 1975
Members of the morning session of the Nursery School of Trinity Presbyterian Church and their teachers saw cocoons made by caterpillars and are anticipating three monarchs in the next few weeks. Members of the class are: Jeff Hagan, Jenny Moran, Jay Cherup, Dodie Dodson, Kenny Kozel, Jason Crabtree, Sandra Lloyd, Matthew Jones, Anya Kaleshefski, Albert Finnarelli, Nancy Walker, Joe Smith, Jason Moran, Stephen Day and Mark Pazewski.
“Join in the Spirit of ‘76” will be the theme of the semi-formal buffet and dance to be held later this month at Gate of Heaven Auditorium. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rutkowski, chairmen, recently conferred with their committee to complete arrangements. Serving on the committee are: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McGraw, co-chairmen; Mr. and Mrs. William Kalinowski, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tirpak, Mr. and Mrs. David Larkins, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wenricks.
50 years ago – 1965
Annual election of officers was held last evening by Osage Lodge, I.O.O.F., Lehman. The following were elected to serve for the ensuing year: Noble Grand, Frederick W. Anderson; Vice Grand, Wesley Moore; Recording Secretary, Joseph Ellsworth; Financial Secretary, Robert Disque; Treasurer, Raymond Searfoss; Trustee, Everett Wilson.
Mrs. William Frey is chairman of the upcoming Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the Lake-Lehman P.T.A. The dinner will follow the Parents’ Day football game and will be held in the high school cafeteria. Committee members include: Robert Walsh, Mrs. Carl Kern, Mrs. Grover Anderson, Mrs. Gilbert Boston and Mrs. Henry Tuck.
Carverton Methodist Youth Fellowship met recently and elected its officers for the 1965-66 sessions. President, Clark Switzer; Vice-President, Charles Wasserott; Chaplain, Phillip Reid; Secretary, Penny Metz.
60 years ago – 1955
Two new artists will appear for the first time at the eighth annual Community Concert of Back Mountain talent Friday night in Westmoreland High School auditorium. A new resident of the Back Mountain area who will participate will be Mrs. Marjory P. Weiss, accomplished violinist. Another new artist will be Mary J. Williams, of Trucksville, accomplished piano soloist.
The eighth annual Fall festival of the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department will be held in the fire hall at Chase Corners later this month. The following committees have been assigned: Reception, Robert Culp, Edgar Lashford; tickets, James Roushey, chairman, Louis T. Wilcox, Dennis Bonning Sr.; solicitations, Fred Fielding, chairman, Mike Olinatz; publicity, Robert Culp; advertising, Harold Bertram, chairman; produce, Harold Bertram, chairman, Louis T. Wilcox, Ed Kropp.
70 years ago – 1945
Dallas Township Parent-Teacher Association, at the meeting last Monday, elected officers for the coming year and made plans for the annual Halloween Dance. New officers are: President, Mrs. John Girvan; vice president, Raymond Kuhnert; secretary, Miss Emily Goldsmith; treasurer, Sheldon Mosier; publicity, Mrs. Jeanne Sullivan.
Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Himmler of Lake Street were guests of honor at a party given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Baker to celebrate their wedding anniversary Friday evening. Present were Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Dungey, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shiber, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Lewis and Mrs. Sara Baker.
Movies playing at the Shaver Theatre, Shavertown, included “God is My Co-Pilot” starring Dennis Morgan, Dane Clark and Andrea King; “The Cisco Kid returns” featuring Duncan Denaldo; and “When Strangers Marry” starring Kim Hunter and Dean Jaegger.
