20 years ago – 1995

Sandy Whitesell of Sweet Valley recently won the grand prize of 2,000 quarters at Franklin First Savings Bank’s new Dallas office at the intersection of Route 309 and Upper Demunds Road. Ms. Whitesell opened a treasure chest with a randomly chosen key and picked the Grand Prize Certificate from numerous envelopes inside.

Irem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its charter this year. The Mosque on North Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre is the fraternal home of the nearly 5,000 Shrine Masons from 17 counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The celebration will be highlighted by the “Ceremonial Ball” on the pavilion of Irem Temple Country Club in Dallas. Members of the planning committee are: Paul G. Nicholson, Dallas, Potentate, Honorary Chairman; William H. Bartle, String Band, Chairman; John Michael, Chanter; Donald S. Anthony, Dallas, Past Potentate, Chanter, current recorder; Scott B. Shuster, Harveys Lake, Imperial Representative, Chief Aide, Brass Band; and Fritz Chamberlain, co-director of Public Relations.

30 Years Ago – 1985

Alderson United Methodist Women held a surprise birthday party last week in the church social room honoring Amelia Davis and Sue Dodd on their 80th birthdays. Present were Mabel Ackerman, Doris Anderson, Marguerite Cauda, Ann Coulton, Mildred Garinger, Esther Grey, Alice Holdsworth, Helen Hunsinger, Sally Kennard, Hilda Leinthall, Lucy Manusky, Darla Marsh, Dorothy Marsh, Betty Mintzer, Eleanor Puterbaugh, Ethel Roden, Bernie Stine, Margaret Shrinko, Peg Truska, Barbara Wall and Iva Wall.

For 12 4-H’ers in Luzerne County, last Saturday was a special day. They were selected to represent the county in the East-Northeast region 4-H Fashion Revue held in Nanticoke, at the Luzerne County Community College Conference Center. The 4-H’ers made the outfits they modeled as part of their clothing projects. Those taking part in the regional revue were: Christy Tomascik, Victoria Podwika, Pamela Brubaker, Stacey Mensigner, Brenda Barna, Jodi, Wendy and Tracey Whitebreak, Kristen Youngman, Barbara Babcock, Laurie Welsh and Bernadette Grosz.

Golfers Jack Barbose and Bill Davies shot their way to the winning slot in the Dallas Area Tuesday Evening Golf League. Both are from Shavertown and birdied their way past 14 other teams to win the league championship played at Twin Oaks Golf Course, Orange. Runners up were Ed Janosik and Fred Kwasnik.

40 years ago – 1975

Outstanding players at Ruby Carmon’s Back Mountain Sports Camp during the recent sessions are Joann Hoover, outstanding beginner; Mary Elgaway, outstanding back; Holly Taylor, outstanding back; Sandy Hayduk, outstanding line; and Lori Swaintek, outstanding beginner.

Noxen Junior Softball League recently awarded its championship team at a trophy award day. Members of the team, which had a record of 12 wins and two losses, are: Tom Scouten, Butch Eckhart, Sid May, Jeff May, Bill Keefe, Mike Galka, Bob Bellas, Jim Bellas, Joe Luketic, Herb Strohl, John Bellas, Carl Weaver, Dwight Barbacci and Dean Mouse.

50 years ago – 1965

Dallas Lions Club met to install officers for the coming year recently. Officers are Jim Agnew, president, Bob Boyer, 1st vice president, Charlie Gordon, 2nd vice president, John Shinal, 3rd vice president, Ed Buckley, treasurer, Tom Reese, financial secretary, Ralph Hood, secretary, Don Holcomb, tail twister, Mike Crisci, lion tamer, John Hilburt, director, and Dick Myers, director.

Cadette Girl Scouts of Troop 644, Dallas, recently returned from a four-day troop encampment at Tamaroo, Camp Onawandah. Highlights of the outing included a hootenanny in which other troops were invited, a water carnival complete with a variety or ridiculous stunts, and evening splash party in chilly temperatures, the making of colorful gimp bracelets, and on the final evening, a Scout’s Own during which each girl reflected on the true meaning of Girl Scouting. Participants included Nancy Crispell, Jane Mitchell, Judi Stasko, Sharon Yalick, Shirley Brown, Kathy Connolly, Priscilla Reese, Beth Burke, Diane Hozempa, Connie Havir, Chris Demmy and Peggy Bayliss.

60 years ago – 1955

A large audience, many of them from Storyland, attended the Tom Thumb wedding at Orange Church Hall under the sponsorship of the Cheerio Class. The wedding, directed by Mrs. Hugh Gebheart, was acclaimed one of the prettiest of the season. Members of the wedding party were: Bride, Jane Mitchell; bride-groom, Robert Sickler; minister, Robert Gardner; best man, Allan Reese; maid of honor, Diane Evans; ring bearer, Curtis Reese; father of the bride, Arthur Baird; mother of the bride, Sharon Bedford; mother of the groom, Connie Sickler.

Mrs. Leroy Brown. Lehman, has been appointed general of the Back Mountain team of the 1955 Membership Enrollment of the Wilkes-Barre YWCA according to an announcement by Mrs. J. Warren Yarnal, general chairman of the Enrollment.

70 years ago – 1945

The 4-H Club of Ruggles held a corn and wiener roast at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Traver recently. Attending were Mrs. Ferne Smith, Carl Faye, Connie and Jerry Smith, Walter and John Bronson, Margaret, Phillip and Guida Sorber, Laura Mae Keiper, Marion, Carrie and Claude Wilkes, Sterling Kocher and son, Luther, Mrs. Lawrence Conell and Richard and Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Farver and Treva, Charlotte and Marilyn.

Two local people, K.G. Laycock of Shavertown and Mrs. William Powell of Shrineview, won distinction at the Anthracite Masters Individual Bridge Tournament in Scranton on Sunday. Out of twenty-eight contestants, Mr. Laycock was top winner, being awarded four master points for his victory, and Mrs. Powell came in fourth.
