20 years ago – 1995

Several Dallas Middle School sixth grade students from the classes of Mrs. Joan Rakowski and Mrs. Maureen Richards have recently had poems accepted for publication in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans. Students who had their poetry selected for publication are: Jared Karalunas, Kevin Piekara, Amanda Russ, Nick Russon, Raegan Guelich, T.J. Daveski, Tony Demarco, Bruce Hubbard, Brad Balutis, Karen Hann, Becca Hadzor, Jennifer Fleig, Jared Flowers, Jason Race, Ryan Stredny, Bill Heffernan, Keith Sprau, Brynn Kovalick, Kim Fowler, Amy Koshinski, Megan Rogan, Dawn Ellsworth and Michael Laity.

At a recent awards program at the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School, the Michael S. Gruen Citizenship Award was presented to John Popko, son of John and Cathy Dymond-Popko, Hunlock Creek. This award is presented annually in memory of Michael Gruen, who was a sixth grade teacher at Lehman-Jackson.

30 years ago – 1985

For the last six weeks the Advanced Child Development Class of Lake-Lehman High School held a play school for three and four year olds. The children participated in arts and crafts, story time, music, snack, games, field trips within the school and other activities. Children attending: Alexandra Dulski, Crystal Zacharias, Sandi Clark, Stephanie Peneno, Chad Sorber, Michelle Alters, Carrie Race, Rebekah Brighthaupt, Danny Williams, Eddie Keller, Michelle Stolarick, Joey Solinski, Nikki Newell, Patrick Deremer, P.J. Margellina, Rhonda Forster, Andrew Gaia, Jason Pearce and Chris Rogers.

Five girls from Dallas and Lake-Lehman High Schools were selected to the Open Division in the high school Division Keystone Games hockey games which will be played at Main Campus, Penn State. Cristi Strauser ad Jill Radzinski, Dallas High School graduates will play on the Open Division team with Susie Slocum, Lake-Lehman High School. Maureen Wisnieski and Linda King, Dallas, will play on the High School Division team.

40 years ago – 1975

The Fred Waring Music Workshop is the scene this week of a lot of musical work and fun for Bill Cutter from Dallas. The workshop is held annually on the campus of East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania. Workshoppers are coached and guided in all aspects of presenting the new and old in today’s choral music. Study is concentrated in the areas of repertory, arranging, conducting, staging and lighting, sound and recording technique, church music and “tone syllables” to name only a few.

At their recent meeting, the Back Mountain Environmental Group elected Steve Klaeboe, Shavertown, chairman. The lifelong area resident has been active in many community affairs, including the Back Mountain Library Auction. The Back Mountain Environmental Group is a non-profit organization.

Three members of Cloverleaf 4-H Club are participating in an interstate 4-H exchange trip for the first time this summer. The purpose of the exchange is to gain new ideas for 4-H programs in other states. Local participants heading to Missouri are Mary Beard, Dallas; Lisa Loke, Trucksville; Brenda Chadwick, Shavertown;

50 years ago – 1965

Three boys from Dallas High School attended a two-week orientation course at Lehigh this summer to determine in what direction to bend their future education. Howard Wiener, Ernie Gay and Scott Alexander were in residence for two weeks with the Lehigh faculty as advisors.

First in Dallas Borough history, the brand new Plymouth police cruiser was delivered from the dealer to Borough Council Tuesday afternoon. Police Committee chairman Robert Moore says the car is heavier than an ordinary Plymouth sedan, is equipped with a big 270 horsepower Chrysler engine, heavy duty shocks and battery, and a number of other extras.

Irem Temple Women Golfers played for the Captain’s prize on Tuesday. It was won by Mrs. Abram Nesbitt with a net of 68. Putting prize was won by Mrs. William Wicks and Mrs. Frank Wagner.

60 years ago – 1955

James Buckley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Buckley, won a bicycle in the U.S. Keds contest sponsored through Pomeroy’s Department Store, by guessing the number of airplanes in a picture. Jimmy guessed 354. The actual number was 355.

The Ladies Missionary meeting of the Shavertown Bible Church was held Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Earl McCarty, Machell Ave., Dallas. Mrs. Claude Golightley, Jr. was the speaker. Present were: Mrs. Dayton Garnett, Mrs. Ernest Bell, Mrs. Floyd Hoover, Mrs. Peter Evelock, Mrs. Eugene Kocher, Mrs. Elmer Hoover, Mrs. Oscar Culp and Mrs. Russell Edmondson.

70 years ago – 1945

Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire Company Community Band will present its second summer concert at the Community Bandstand on Sunday evening. Janet Garinger and Prof. John Rowlands will be guest soloists, and there will be xylophone, tuba and trumpet numbers. Ralph Paul will play the Solovox between the first and second parts of the program.

Toby Creek Lodge, I.O.O.F. held a picnic at the Joseph Bulford farm last Saturday afternoon. About 100 were present to enjoy the games, singing, stunts and good eats. Contest winners were: Peanut Race – Thomas Cleasby Jr. and Barbara Davis; Cracker-Eating Contest – Wilma Robbins; Three-Legged Race: Dick Davies and Harry Johnson; Banana Eating Contest – Alberta Lohman and Peg Robbins; Rolling Pin Contest – Mrs. Lew Harris.
