History: Dallas was named for Alexander J. Dallas, the United States Secretary of the Treasury under President James Madison. The borough was established on the Harveys Lake branch of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and noted as a good business point. In 1889, J.J. Ryman became the prime mover in establishing a broom factory here. He then became president and general manager of a stock company known as the Dallas Broom Company. In 1890, a meeting of the directors was held at Raub’s Hotel in the borough to purchase 80 acres with a consideration being $5,000.

History: Dallas Township was established from lands taken from Kingston Township in 1817. In 1797, Ephraim McCoy, a Revolutionary solder, built the first log cabin near what is now Dallas Borough. In 1808, William Honeywell purchased 500 acres of land and built a log house. The following year he built a frame addition, the first frame structure in what would become the township. In 1813, Judge Baldwin built his sawmill on Toby Creek and in 1818 Christian Rice built his sawmill on the same creek. This mill was in use until 1875.

History: Franklin Township is one of the smallest municipalities in Luzerne County. The township was formed in 1843 from parts of Kingston, Dallas, Northmoreland and Exeter Townships when Luzerne County Court authorized its organization. It is presumed that the town was named in honor of col. John Franklin, a settler and Colonial leader and hero of the Yankee-Pennamite Wars and the Revolutionary War.

History: During the time of the Revolutionary War, a local settler named Benjamin Harvey, returning home from British imprisonment in Canada, accidentally discovered Pennsylvania’s largest natural lake. During its most prosperous days, the lake was a bustling public playground with stately hotels, swimming areas, steamboats and even its own amusement park. Today, Harveys Lake is mainly a private residential area, but is still visited by people from all over Luzerne County and surrounding areas.

History: Jackson Township was established in 1844 from land taken from Plymouth and was named for President Andrew Jackson. In 1795, the first road was cut out and stretched from Wilkes-Barre to Bradford County. Also in 1795, the first settlement was made by Palmer Ransom. Henry Cease is given credit for being the first settler in the western part of the township. He settled at Harveys Creek in 1830. Jesse Brown was the first person buried in Jackson Township after being killed by a falling tree in 1796. He was buried in the woods east of Huntsville. This is now the cemetery’s location.

History: Kingston Township is one of 11 of the Susquehanna townships into which Luzerne County was divided in 1790 and also one of the original formed under the authority of Connecticut and the Susquehanna Land Company. It has been diminished from its original size by the removal of land that is now Dallas and parts of Franklin and Lake Townships.

History: Lake Township was created in 1841 by taking land from both Lehman and Monroe townships. It received its name, Lake, because Harveys Lake, the largest natural lake in the state, lies inside the township’s boundaries. Daniel Lee settled at the head of Pike’s Creek in 1806 and the marsh was then called Lee’s Pond after him. The first road through the township was chopped out around 1875 to induce settlement.

History: Lehman Township was established in 1829 and was named in honor of Dr. William Lehman. In 1801, the first frame house was built by William Fuller. In 1837, the first mill was erected by Lewis Hoyt. In 1848, the first store was opened by Daniel Urquhart and Edward Shott near where the Lehman Center Schoolhouse once stood. The first post office was also kept inside Urquhart and Shott’s store.

History: Tunkhannock Borough was organized in 1841 along the Susquehannna River and its tributaries. There is evidence that has been found of the former existence of Indian towns in the same area.
