20 YEARS AGO — 1997

A new public artwork graces the concrete slab in front of a Main Street, Dallas art studio. Created by the Lawson Scholars ’97 and sponsored by Sue Hand’s Imagery, the mural depicts historical Main Street, Dallas, circa 1900 as it would appear if it were squeezed out of a tube of paint. This year’s Lawson Scholars are an elite group of area high school artists chosen from over 30 applicants. This past summer they participated in art classes taught by four instructors at Sue Hand’s Imagery. Back Mountain students who participated in this summer’s program were: Paula Franklin, Hunlock Creek; Nila Pardini, Dallas; and Mike Sudal, Shavertown.

Three students of Robert Costigan at Rising Sun Martial Arts in Dallas took first and second place at the Coal Kickin’ Tournament held earlier this month in Tamaqua, PA. Jared Semanek, 10, took home a first place trophy for white belt peewee fighting; Jordan Fisher, 9, won second for white belt peewee fighting; and Randal Everetts, 16, won first on the lightbelt fighting division.

30 YEARS AGO — 1987

Maria C. Schleich of Dallas, a senior marketing major at King’s College, recently completed a 14-week internship at Walt Disney World in Florida through the Experimental Learning Program at King’s and the Walt Disney World College Internship Program. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Rudolph Schleich of RD 4 Dallas, she is a 1984 graduate of Lake-Lehman High School. Her internship consisted of daily duties in the area of register operations, stock and cash control and merchandising along with attending weekly business seminars which discussed the daily operation and marketing of the Disney World complex.

Brenda King was crowned 1987 Dallas Homecoming Queen during festivities held at the Dallas football field Saturday afternoon. Ms. King was escorted by Don Burke. First runner-up was Jody Gruver who was escorted by Mark Krohn. The Homecoming Queen and her court reigned over a Dallas victory over GAR in front of a Homecoming Day crowd.

Brownie Troop 641 recently held its Investiture Ceremony where new girls were welcomed into the troop and returning girls were rededicated. Members of the troop are Stephanie Pineno, Michelle Alters, Amanda Rittenhouse, Karen Bowersox, Sandy Lowery, Karen Cole, Joanne Shoemaker, Rebecca Kaufman, Shelly Lowery, Kristi Snyder, Geri Yankoski, Bobbi Stogoski, Stacey Varone, Missy Rakes and Tanya Kosakowski.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

Penn State’s Wilkes-Barre Campus is hosting an Open House on the Lehman Campus this Thursday evening. The Open House, to which parents and friends of the students have been invited, will include scientific and technical displays and an informal reception where visitors can meet local PSU faculty members. One of the displays will be an electronic display designed by electrical engineering students including Phil Corby, Mike Attanasio, Alan Levandoski, Doug Williams, Bill Ruck, Ed Harding, Joe Stec, Len Shutta and Mike Sullivan.

Members of the Dallas American Legion joined by students, veterans, staff members and former classmates of the late Pfc. Daniel S. Walko, dedicated the Veteran Patio and Bulletin Board in his memory, Monday, at Penn State’s Wilkes-Barre campus. Walko, a graduate of the local campus, was killed on duty in Vietnam.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

Letters of Commendation honoring them for their high performance on the 1967 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test have been awarded to two students at Dallas Senior High School, Principal Thomas H. Jenkins has announced. Commended students are Ruth Besecker and John Anderson. They are among the 40,000 students who scored in the upper 2 percent of those who will graduate from high school in 1968.

Reverend Charles F. Gomer, Jr., pastor of the Trucksville Methodist Church, installed officers of the Junior and Senior High Youth Fellowship in the morning worship hour last Sunday. The officers are: Joann Gensel, Bonnie Long, Paula Richards, Holly Phillips, Barbara Long, Nancy Mathers, Bob Kleiner, Lee Eckart, Clifford Engler and Jim Pichart.

Three of the Dallas Post Office employees were recently recognized by the Post Office Department for Superior Performance, according to an announcement by Postmaster Edward Buckley. Each employee received a certificate signed by Regional Director, J.J. Doherty, of the Philadelphia Region, along with a check for $250. Recognized were Edmund Labatch, Andrew Sokol and Edward McDade.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

Three new members for the Book Club were accepted at Wednesday’s meeting in the Back Mountain Memorial Library Annex. Presented by Mrs. Warren Unger, membership chairman, they are: Mrs. Carl Schultheis, Mrs. William Applegate and Mrs. Cornelius Dominic.

John Beagle is suffering from first, second and third degree burns at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, as a result of a gas explosion at his Tastee-Freeze plant on Memorial Highway. The blast, which touched off the devastating fire Monday, destroyed a business property on which insurance had been allowed to lapse. The explosion rocked Fernbrook and hurled Mr. Beagle through a plate glass window.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

A spirited election attended by fifty members Monday night at the Legion Home on Huntsville resulted in the election of Frank Ferry as Post Commander. This will be his fourth term. Outgoing Commander is Donald Grose. Other officers were: Harold Brobst, vice commander; Leonard Harvey, second vice commander; Arthur Dungey, finance officer; Clare Winters, chaplain; Primo Berrettini, service officer; Joe Lavelle and Wilson Granger, sergeants-at-arms and Steve Pavlick, historian.

Lehman Community and School will hold an old-fashioned Halloween Party in the school auditorium Wednesday night at 8. The grand march will take place at 8:40 when $25 in cash prizes will be awarded. Chairman is Robert Martin who will be assisted by the following committee: Joseph Ellsworth, Virginia King, Ruth Shellhamer, Mrs. Dorothy Travis, Mrs. Earl Weidner, Mary Battle and Arthur Harrison.

A number of local women attended the Regional Conference of W.S.C.S. of Methodist Churches at Elm Park Church, Scranton, on Thursday. They were: Mrs. Stanley Davies, Mrs. David Evans, Mrs. O.L. Harvey, Mrs. Carlton reed, Mrs. E.A. Fiske, Mrs. Edgar Brace, Mrs. Floyd Ide, Mrs. Richard Robbins, Mrs. Charles James, Mrs. John Benner and Mrs. W.H. Baker.
