KINGSTON — After a tough start to the season which included losses to unbeaten teams, Lake-Lehman spent the week smoothing out the rough edges. It led to a dominating performance Saturday night.
The Black Knights overwhelmed Holy Redeemer early, leading to a 56-6 victory in a non-conference football game.
“Right now, you want to get an identity and work on fundamentals,” Lehman coach Jerry Gilsky said. “This week we had an extra day of practice and were in full pads all week. We had to get better at tackling, we had to get better with this and everything else like that.
“We really took a step back and said, listen, we’ve got to get fundamentally sound.”
Lehman (2-3) rushed for 422 yards and 17.6 yards per carry in the first half. Those numbers would have been better if not for some downfield penalties that sliced off yardage.
Starting running back Jaydon Skipalis led the way with 153 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, all coming in the first half as the Black Knights built a 49-6 lead. Backup Cordyn Harris had 117 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, and was victimized on those downfield penalties several times.
In all, 14 Black Knights ran the ball for a total of 510 yards.
The second-half quarters were reduced to eight minutes with a running clock. The first half plodded along, taking 88 minutes to play because of penalties and injuries.
Redeemer (1-4) entered off a win over Susquehanna which snapped a 24-game losing streak. The Royals exited with several players injured, including quarterback Brady McDermott.
McDermott, who took over the starting role when the starter was hurt in the season opener, was injured on a sack early in the second quarter.
McDermott led Redeemer’s only scoring drive which ended with a 3-yard TD pass to Lucas Shrader at the end of the first quarter. Shrader later replaced McDermott under center.
