Dallas grad Regan Rome adds to historical achievements

Dallas graduate Regan Rome won her fourth Colonial Athletic Association Athlete of the Year award, moving the William & Mary junior within range of making conference history before she graduates.

The distance runner was honored as CAA Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year along with Scholar-Athlete of the Year when awards were given out for the sport in late June.

Rome has been recognized in both track and cross country during her career.

Matt Lane, a 2001 William & Mary graduate, used the same two-sport combination to become the only five-time Athlete of the Year in conference history.

Rome, one of 11 to be Athlete of the Year four times, became the first athlete in conference history to sweep Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in two different sports in the same calendar year. She doubled in both during cross country.

During the recently completed track and field season, Rome became the first William & Mary athlete to earn All-America honors in two track and field events in the same year since 1982. She placed sixth at the NCAA Division I Championships in the 5,000-meter run and 21st in the 10,000.

Rome won the CAA Championships in the 5,000 for the second straight year and became the first from William & Mary to earn All-America recognition in three different events during her career, adding to earlier honors in the 3,000.
