Only yesterday: Dawn Covert crowned Spring Prom Queen at Lake Lehman High School in 1967

20 YEARS AGO —1997

The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania at its State Convention announced that the Back Mountain Garden Bloomers Club of Dallas, staging the NPA Flower Show for the past four years, was a Standard Flower Show State and National Award winner. The Garden Club was awarded The Green and Gold Superior Flower Show Award Ribbon (first place in the state) and a National Council of State Garden Clubs Flower Show Achievement Award, the “purple rosette” (a first place National Award). Members of the club are: Florence Hallstead, Audrey Angelella, Lora Marcolina Freifeld, Linda Thoma, Diane Kopcha Katlic, Phyllis Mundy, Beverly Johnston, Corrine Pawling, Petsye Huyghe, Beverly Turner, Claudette Banks, Mae Rome and Lucile Parker.

Marla Karalunas has completed training as a Welcome Wagon Representative and will soon be greeting families moving into the Back Mountain with her trademark Welcome Wagon basket filled with civic and cultural information as well as free gifts and special offers from local businesses and professionals. The announcement was made by Susan Gross, Welcome Wagon International, Inc.’s national vice president of sales.

30 YEARS AGO —1987

Brownie Troop 694 of Gate of Heaven Church recently held an investiture ceremony welcoming 12 new Girl Scouts. New Girl Scouts are: Anna Appel, Melissa Stanchak, Kathleen Harkins, Katie O’Brien, Erica Tower, Gussie Malpass, Erin Barry, Samantha Abod, Maureen Paley, Jennifer Moran, Audrey Marut and Colleen Quigley.

The Meadows Apartments in Dallas will hold their Fourth Annual Spring Festival next Thursday. There will be handmade Arts & Crafts, ceramics, Home Baked Goods, Rummage and Plants. Members of the Arts & Crafts Committee include Eleanor Cragle, Dorothy Derr, Tess Polachek, Eva Jenkins, Sarah Clark, Minnie Hazeltine, Ethel Roden, Ruth Muchler, Ruth Foley, Theta Dickson, Peg Williams, Cora Dougal, Dorothy Williams and Elizabeth Wormack.

40 YEARS AGO —1977

Three members of the Back Mountain Jay-C-ettes recently completed the CPR course, bringing the total number of members completing the course to six. Sandy Mannear, Margaret Dwinchick and Carole Chapple recently completed the course. Former graduates are Cindy Cave, Glenda Pomrinke and Sharon McDermott.

Brownie Troop 650 honored their fathers at a father-daughter banquet at Trinity United Presbyterian Church recently. Scouts hosting their fathers were: Megan Thomas, Ann Marie Dana, Beth Scott, Leigh Pawling, Amy Urbanis, Erin Chaney, Beth Ann Stecher, Stefanie Michael, Jennifer Ondish, Lynn Huey, Kim Watkins, Karen Niskey, Crissy Ertley, Jennifer Turner, Amy Rogers, Karen Vloedman, Cindy Stecker, Kathy Fader, Cheryl Reabuck and Jennifer Williams.

50 YEARS AGO —1967

A mathematics contest sponsored by the Luzerne County Council of Mathematics Teachers was held last month in the Wilkes College Gym. The test was subdivided into two divisions, 12th and 11th grades. Students from all Luzerne County high schools, public and private, were invited to compete. Dallas Senior High School was represented by four seniors and five juniors. Scoring in the top ten for Dallas Senior High, 12th grade, were Ruth Higgins and James Knecht, while in the 11th grade division were Richard Fedock, James Gosart and Larry Gilbert.

Dawn Covert, a senior, was crowned Spring Prom Queen at Lake Lehman High School April 27 when the junior class played host to the seniors at the annual formal. Miss Covert’s escort was Richard Bombick. Comprising the queen’s court were five maids-in-waiting, all six girls nominated by the senior class and selected by the entire student body.

60 YEARS AGO —1957

Among sixty-four Luzerne County men appointed to jobs on the Northeastern Extension of Pennsylvania turnpike are three Back Mountain men. They are Bernard J. Murphy, Meadowcrest, Trucksville, senior inspector, salary $4,862; Thomas J. Nichols, Meadowcrest, Trucksville, assistant district materials engineer, salary $6,162; and Harry C. Sickler, Dallas, inspector, salary $3,588.

Troop 147, Girl Scouts of St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown, held their Easter party and hat show Tuesday evening when each girl modeled her version of an Easter bonnet. Prizes were won by Kathy Monahan, prettiest; Charlene Makar, most original; Alice Dorosky, funniest.

Mrs. Byron Kester, president, entertained members of the Fidelis Class of Orange Methodist Church at her home last Wednesday evening. Hostesses were Mrs. Kester and Mrs. Mae Schoonover. Present were Mesdames Henry Phillips, Ira Frantz, Howard Coolbaugh, Hildegard Reese, George Berlew, William Rozelle, John Perry, Florence Ross, Mary Emmanuel, Lillian Henderson, Myrtle Vopleus, William Perrego, Arthur Gay, Laird Stanton, Nora Dymond, Mabel Bell, Robert Moore and the hostesses.

70 YEARS AGO —1947

Lehman High School sophomores in Mr. Grossman’s room attended a showing of “The Razor’s Edge” at Kingston Thursday evening. The group won the movie party through its efforts in the Lehman PTA membership drive last autumn; being the first class in which each student enrolled at least one member. Those attending were: Alice Culp, Charlotte Culp, Naomi Harrison, Albina Pall, Ruth Pembleton, Audrey Sayre, Clara Swire, Albert Ashton, Evan Brown, William Golightly, Edward Kosakowski, Phillip Scavone, William Simms, Richard Thomas, Ronald Thomas and Burl Updyke.

Troop 54 Girl Scouts enjoyed a cooking party at the home of their leader, Mrs. Jack Barnes of Machell Avenue Wednesday. Present were: Anne Mae Schaffer, Barbara Ferry,

Barbara Ide, Joan Kear, Joyce Robbins, Betty Jackson, Jeanne Deremer, Marcella Tibus, Joan Oliver, Janet Haycox, Nancy Schooley and Frances Siley.

Annual planting of trees for Dallas Township Forest was begun Monday when students of the school planted 6,000 trees on the former Sam Hess farm. Land was donated by Dallas Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs.
