Dallas High School students have been selected to attend district band and orchestra. They are: Todd Kern, Christine Shaively, Tanya Spurlin, Kim Wall, Jonathan Humphrey, Kristen Faerber, Jennifer Lyons, Todd Butcher, Tim Mansfield, Mike Dobranski, Charles Martin, Paul Carlson and Joe Sallitt.
The Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, recently commended the Dallas Kiwanis for their generous donation to support the “Giving Tree’” which provides special holiday gifts for residents at the Center. In recognition of their dedicated giving to the community the year through, the organization was awarded a “certificate of Community Service.” Kiwanis members present at the presentation were: George McCutcheon, Roy Stair, Walter Kozemchak, Bill Gately, Tex Wilson and John Navich.
30 YEARS AGO — 1987
Twenty-one members from the “Atlantic Coast Champions” Lake-Lehman High School Band were selected to participate in the District IX Festival held at Valley View High School this weekend. Honored were: Julie Folmer, Trina Cigarski, Albert Cigarski, MaryAnn Kasko, Kelly McNulty, Kathy McAvoy, Michelle Phares, Duayne Austin, Missy Hontz, Barry Bernstein, Jeff Cairo, Connie Belkowski, Brian Titus, Danny Smith, Frank Riggins, Christine Gavlick, Kim Weidner, Kim Sevenski, Ben Bigus, Mike Lubinski and Mike Bigus.
Six new girls have been invested into Brownie Troop 649, Lehman. They are Beth Hartshorne, Robyn Weber, Jamie Sabol, Sarah Hadzor, April Derhammer and Jill Obuhosky.
40 YEARS AGO — 1977
Carol A. Cartier of Dallas, a first-year student at Luzerne County Community College, spent much of the recent holiday break participating in a Circle K community service project. Carol, a graduate of Bishop O’Reilly High School, is an education major at the local college and an active member of its Circle K.
Several Back Mountain students recently participated in a five-week seminar on “Drafting and Design” at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus. Among senior representing ten area high schools were: Dallas – Glenn Yeeles, Mark Pettit, Robert Eipper, Joe Perry, Pat White and Penny Sprall; Lake-Lehman – Karen Holdsworth.
Back Mountain resident John Hibbard, president of Keystone Junior College, Factoryville, recently was named “Newsmaker of the Year for 1976” for his accomplishments in education by a Scranton Sunday newspaper. Hibbard was selected from some 200 applicants for the presidency of Keystone after initially filling the position on an interim basis while a member of the board.
50 YEARS AGO — 1967
Peggy Petroskas, Harveys Lake, has been cast as a dancer in the second production this season of the Bloomsburg Players, “The Trojan Women.” Peggy arranged the choreography for the Greek tragedy which is directed by Mr. Michael J. McHale, of the Theatre Department. Miss Petroskas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Petroskas, Lakeside Drive.
Shavertown can claim one of the oldest residents in the Back Mountain as Mrs. Emma Phillips, Lincoln Drive, observed her 99th birthday last Wednesday. Mother of Mrs. Edward Robitski, who has resided with the non-agenarian all of her married life, Mrs. Phillips is revered by her many friends and acquaintances and possesses of exceeding good humor.
60 YEARS AGO — 1957
Five men, one from each school district of the Dallas Area Schools jointure, were named to the Authority Board for construction of a new Senior High School at Tuesday night’s session. Designated as members of the board were: Raymon Hedden, Dallas Borough; Harry Swepston, Dallas Township; Howard Wiener, Kingston Township; Hugh Gebheart, Franklin Township; Samuel Davis, Monroe Township.
Mrs. William Carroll was installed as president and Mrs. John McEnrue as vice president by Father Francis Kane at the meeting of Altar and Rosary Society of Gate of Heaven Church held in the kindergarten room of the church.
George Holowich, 33, Harveys Lake, was shot in the leg by a companion, Forrest Sorber, 61, while hunting snowshoe rabbits, when Mr. Sorber tripped on waist-high brush and knocked his gun off safety. Holowich was taken to General Hospital Saturday morning, where he is reported comfortable.
70 YEARS AGO — 1947
Fred W. Anderson, Carverton, was installed as president of Kiwanis Club at an impressive installation program conducted Wednesday night at Irem Temple Country Club by Dr. J.P. Kuschel of Pittston, past lieutenant governor of the eleventh district of Pennsylvania. Other officers installed were Albert Schaffer, first vice president; Clarence Shaver, jr., second vice president; John A Parsons, secretary; David J. Joseph, treasurer; and directors L.J. Troxell, John Henninger, Ralph Hazletine, Melvin Mosier, James Lenahan and James A. Oliver.
Dallas Junior Woman’s Club celebrated its third anniversary with a dinner at Irem Temple Country Club, Tuesday evening. New members were welcomed by the executive board at a candle light service. New members taken into the club were: Mrs. Ethel Allen, Mrs. Nora Austin, Mrs. Betty Casterline, Mrs. Mable Harter, Mrs. Jeanne Fordercy, Mrs. Edith Anderson, Mrs. Florence Bennallack, Mrs. Doris Clemow, Mrs. Alberta Cross, Miss Dorothy Jean Considine, Miss Jean Franklin, Miss Romayne Harvey, Miss Doris
