District 2 alters tennis tournament plans

District 2 has made changes to its boys tennis team and singles tournaments in order to adjust for anticipated weather issues this week.

The district is going with an earlier start to Tuesday’s conclusion to the team tournament, including the semifinal involving Dallas. It is also playing the singles tournament Wednesday and Thursday, instead of Thursday and Friday.

The District 2 Class 2A team semifinals will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Kirby Park with second-seeded Dallas playing third-seeded Valley View and top-seeded Wyoming Seminary playing fourth-seeded Holy Cross.

The Class 2A final is scheduled to begin at noon, or as courts become available following the District 2-4 Class 3A semifinals.

Dallas reached the final with a 3-1, home-court win over Scranton Prep in a rematch of the last year’s district final that Dallas won, 3-2.

The defending champion Mountaineers swept singles.

Dom Rizzo defeated Matt Maurer, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.

Alex DeRome won second singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Dan Zych.

John Tousssaint won first singles, 6-4, 6-1, over Harrison Oven.

Scranton Prep’s Nick Genco-Matt Tatulli defeated Dallas’ Dan Flynn-Danny Dudick, 6-4, 6-4, at first doubles.

With the team outcome determined, the second doubles match was halted after each team won one set. Caleb Waslick-Robbie Lauer from Dallas won the first set, 6-3, but Adam Kenny-James Cawley from Dallas won the second set by the same score.

Both Dallas players were among the eight seeds decided Monday night for the District 2 singles tournament, which begins Thursday with 37 players.

Toussaint is seeded fourth and DeRome is seventh.

Wednesday’s action will continue until the four semifinalists are determined.
