ONLY YESTERDAY: Kunkle Motors owners invited to tour SAAB headquarters in Sweden 50 years ago

20 years ago — 1995

Dallas High School will present the comedy “Terror in the Suburbs” by Frances Stuart this weekend in the school auditorium. The play is a spoof of the typical 1950s spy thrillers. The cast includes Kyle Baker, Dean Evans, Matthew Hopersberger, Amanda Ahmad, Kristen Faerber, Joy Morgan, Alison Piazza, Alison Rothstein, Tim Herbert, Jennifer Moser and Amy Samuels.

The family of the late Vern Pritchard very generously allocated money from the Vern Pritchard Memorial Fund to the Trucksville Nursery School for its Play Yard Landscaping Project. The project, completed in August by Fitch Landscaping Inc., a 40’x 60’ timber border filled with mulch and a Norway Maple tree. The landscaping enhances the use of play equipment and both the tree and landscaping enhance the beauty of the play yard now and will continue to do so in the future.

30 years ago — 1985

The Express soccer team captured first place in the U-12 Division of the Back Mountain Youth Soccer Tournament. Members of the championship team are Reagan Bombick, Nichola Reisinger, Susannah Stair, Matt Bailey, David Holdredge, Tommy Hite, John Appel, Alison Gager, Jennafer Rosentel, Stephen Brdaric, Mark Medura, Ned Palka and Matt Lawrence.

The Alter and Rosary Society of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas, is holding a quilt party on Sunday in the school auditorium. There will be 15 regular games and five specials. A handmade quilt will be awarded for each game. Planning for the event are Tessie Polachek, Betty Segrave-Daly, Barbara Strazdus, Mary Darling and Helen Williams.

Girl Scout Troop 706 will sponsor a holiday decorated dollhouse display at the Lehman Fire Hall next weekend. A variety of doll houses will be on exhibit including a colonial, a Victorian, a farmhouse and many others. Funds will be used to help the girls of the troop to meet expenses for their trip to Georgia. Troop members are: Megan Lukasavage, Charlene Cook, Mandy Jones, Jennifer Cook and Mary Cipolla.

40 years ago — 1975

Mary J. DalSanto, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis DalSanto, Wyoming, will represent Dallas High School in the Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation Leadership Seminar competition sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals and the U.S. Jaycees. A sophomore, Miss DalSanto was selected based on evidence of emerging leadership ability, cooperation with and sensitivity to human beings, relation to new pursuits, desire to learn, interest in community, and school activities after competing with other tenth grade students.

James R. Wisnieski, Kingston Township police officer, is one of 41 officers representing 32 departments who will graduate from the Municipal Police Training Course this week. The course of instruction received by Wisnieski and other officers included all phases of police work and was specifically designed to perfect the skills and techniques of the municipal law enforcement officer, according to the State Police Northeastern Training Center where the course was given.

50 years ago — 1965

In the process of re-decorating their home, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Thomas, Norton Avenue, disconnected a room radiator and placed it in a safe spot. Typical of the curiosity of a five year old, their son, Donald, went to investigate and suffered a fractured leg when the radiator toppled on him. He was taken to Nesbitt Hospital and a cast applied. Don is a kindergarten student in Dallas Schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Meeker, Kunkle, recently toured SAAB-Sweden headquarters in Linkoping, Sweden. Mr. and Mrs. Meeker, owners of Kunkle Motors, Dallas, were among some 200 U.S. dealers of the Swedish-made SAAB cars who toured Sweden to attend the annual meeting of American SAAB dealers and see SAAB’s production of both quality automobiles and high-speed jet aircraft.

60 years ago — 1955

Ray Daring, of Hislop’s Market, will build a sausage factory in the spring on a lot with 350 foot frontage recently purchased on Memorial Highway on the Howard Wardan plot. Mr. Daring, 29, studied at Syracuse this summer from May until September, learning how to make high class sausage and all its kindred, including bologna and frankfurters.

Mrs. John Dana, Carverton, has been appointed chairman of the Dallas Elementary School Card Party and Bake Sale to be held in the school Tuesday night. Assisting her will be Mesdames Carlton Davies, James Lacy, John Wardell, Jack Dungey, Wilbur Davis, Durelle Scott, Donald Bulford, Homer Moyer, Joseph Schneider, John Churry, Ralph Smith, Earl Phillips, Robert Williams.

Back Mountain women taking part I the play, “All is Not Gold That Glitters,” written and produced by Annette Evans, included Mrs. Robert Currie, Mrs. Paul Goddard, Mrs. Clarence woodruff, Mrs. Arthur James, Mrs. W.J. Daw, and Mrs. Ralph Weatherly.

70 years ago — 1945

A jolly enthusiastic crowd of more than 300 dancers circled to the right – circled to the left, promenaded, and made the American Legion Round and Square Dance Friday night at Dallas Borough High School one of the most successful financial and social events held here in a decade. A circle of dancers which extended completely around the auditorium took part in the cake walk. Winners were: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence LaBar, a chocolate cake; Phyllis Elston and David Kunkle, a coconut cake; Claire and Joan Gay, a chocolate cake.

The Senior Class of Kingston Township High School were sponsors of a Sadie Hawkins Day dance last Saturday night in the auditorium of the high school. In accordance with the custom of the day (when Daisy Mae chases Lil’ Abner) everyone was required to wear plaid shirts to be eligible for admittance. It was one big night for the girls, and the boys were present only on invitation form a girl. The spirit of the occasion was heightened when a few of the numbers were declared Tag Dances, and the girls ran and tagged those with whom they wished to dance. One hundred fifty couples attended.
