20 Years Ago — 1995

Fourth graders Meredith Lacey, Jennifer Konopki, Megan Barney, Sylene Marmo, Ashley Redmond, Kaitlyn Musto and Angela Duris carried a banner identifying their class as “Jones’s Jailbirds” at the Dallas Elementary School’s walk-a-thon last month.

Dallas resident Jay McCarroll, a junior fashion design major at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, is in England this semester, studying at the London College of fashions. This venture was made possible by PCT&S’s Study Abroad Program which encourages students to add an international dimension to their education while experiencing the culture of another country first hand.

John Reap, a senior at Bishop O’Reilly High School in Kingston, has been named a Commended Student in the 1996 National Merit Scholarship Program. John is the son of Mrs. Catherine Reap of Shavertown.

30 Years Ago — 1985

A book sale was held in conjunction with the 40th birthday party conducted at the Back Mountain Memorial Library this past Saturday. Some of the guests who chose books to purchase were: Eleanor Fleming, Priscilla Liput, Amy Miers, Charlotte Olgy, Clarence Michael, Debby Miers, Nicole Pisaneschi and Devin Michael.

Members of Lehman Girl Scout Troop 706 recently conducted a paper products and can drive to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen in Wilkes-Barre. Mandy Jones and Becky James were among the girls who participated.

Members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship will conduct a paint sale next Saturday at Pineno’s Porch Sale, Market Street, Lehman. Members include Kim Watkins, Sheryl Clark, Earl Weidner, Jon Pineno and Kim Weidner.

40 Years Ago — 1975

“Up with People” will present a “Bicentennial Musical Explosion” on Oct. 28 at Dallas Junior High School. The cast of 50 ages 17 to 25 represent most of the United States. The performance is being sponsored by the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club. Members of the planning committee include Mrs. Charles Hillard, Mrs. William Davies, Mrs. Evan Bonawitz, Mrs. Donald Lukasavage, Mrs. Sheldon Munn, Mrs. Robert Richardson, Mrs. Charles Parente, Mrs. Edward Thompson, Mrs. William Mannix, Mrs. Harry Bernardi, Mrs. Hank Wasilewski, Mrs. Robert Eyet, Mrs. Jack Barbose, Mrs. John Randolph Jr., Mrs. Robert Stair, Mrs. Alan Landis, Mrs. Lawrence Starz, Mrs. Joseph Hudak, Mrs. John Birkenhead, Mrs. Richard Wisinski, Mrs. Harold Smith, Mrs. John Vozniak and Mrs. Henry Nardoni.

Dana Ziegler was named 1975 Homecoming Queen at the Dallas-Hanover game last Saturday. Her escort was Phil Gregory.

50 Years Ago — 1965

Harveys Lake Women’s Service Club will hold a Square and Round Dance this Saturday at O’Connell’s Twin Lakes. Music will be furnished by Hudak’s Merrymakers. Mrs. Malcolm Nelson is general chairman, assisted by Mrs. Robert Pilger. Other committee chairmen are Mrs. Allen Sorchik, honorary chairman; Mrs. Willard Sutton, finance; Mrs. Lee Bicking, orchestra; Mrs. Howard Jones, prizes; Mrs. Clarence Swire, reservations; Mrs. Michael Clark, tickets, Mrs. C. Wesley Boyle, publicity.

At local Acme markets, fresh whole chickens sold for 26 cents a pound; a four pound bag of apples was 29 cents; a one pound bag of Eight O’Clock coffee was 69 cents; and a three pound box of Tide laundry detergent sold for 75 cents.

60 Years Ago — 1955

Back Mountain Little League Champions for the fifth time in six years, the boys of the Lehman-Jackson team received trophies Monday night before a large gathering of parents, teachers and friends at the PTA meeting in Lehman-Jackson-Ross High School auditorium. Members of the championship team are Donald Malak, Bennie Rusiloski, Stanley Rusiloski, Donald Watson, Harry Cutting, Richard McKeel, Robert Rogers, Larry Thomas, Albert Niezgoda, Robert Ross, Thomas Kupstas, Larry Stash, Richard Disque and Richard Rogers.

The Dallas-Franklin-Monroe chapter of Future Homemakers of America is sending six representatives to the Anuual Region D FHA meeting at Tunkhannock High School on Saturday. Girls making the trip are Nancy Boone, Marie Shupp, Dorothy Kubasti, Jean Cobleigh, Pat Hilgert and Jennie Lee Conden.

Dallas Methodist Couples Club plans a ham supper Nov. 5. In charge are Mr. and Mrs. William Baker Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Davies, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Edwards.

70 Years Ago — 1945

Continued interest in the activities of Trucksville Volunteer Fire Company is manifested with the announcement of the acceptance of seven more members. During the membership drive in the Spring, more than one hundred and forty new members were enrolled, to bring the total membership to one of the highest points in the Company’s history. At the meeting last week, the following new members were accepted: Paul Hughey, Harold Shappelle, Ezra Hoover, Fred Greenly, Richard Seymour, Sterling Riceman and Walter Palmer.

W.S.C.S. of Dallas Methodist Church will hold a Rummage Sale at Luzerne this weekend. Volunteers are: Mrs. James York, Mrs. Stanley Rinehimer, Mrs. Gerald Dettmore, Mrs. Eugene Fiske, Mrs. Nelson Whipp, Mrs. T.B. Robinson and Mrs. Scott. Mrs. Oswald Griffiths is chairman.
