The Lake-Lehman girls basketball team is one of four teams to be represented by three players when the second annual Battle of the Valley All-Star Basketball Classic is played March 31 at the Lackawanna College Student Union.

Seniors from the Wyoming Valley Conference will take on the Lackawanna League in a doubleheader that begins with the girls game at 3 p.m.

Madison Borum, Corinna Scoblick and Savannah Purdy will represent the Lady Knights, who advanced to the District 2 championship game and the second round of the state tournament in Class 4A this season.

Holy Redeemer’s Sarah Kuderka, a Tunkhannock resident, is also part of the WVC girls team.

The Nanticoke and Dunmore girls and Scranton Prep boys also have three players in the game. The Dunmore girls in the game include Misericordia University recruit Gianna Delfino.

Tyler Faux from Tunkhannock will play for the WVC boys in the 5 p.m. game.

The WVC swept both games when the Battle of the Valley made its debut last year at Wilkes.

Joyce Insurance is presenting sponsor for the doubleheader, which benefits Miles for Michael and Allied Services Hospice and Palliative Care.

WRESTLING

Two state-tournament qualifying Dallas wrestlers posted first-period pins when the District 2 All-Star Wrestling Classic that was held March 16 at Hanover Area.

Shawn Henniger from Dallas from a late addition and one of the winners while leading Class 3A over Class 2A, 38-6.

“It was relaxing,” Henninger, a state qualifier who pinned Montrose’s Justin Kelley in 1:20 of the last bout at 285 pounds, told the Times Leader. “It wasn’t an upbeat, battle match. It was just out there to have some fun today and that’s all it was.

“I’ve been wrestling since I was 5 and, through the Penn League, I grew up wrestling these kids. So, a lot of us have been together since we were 5, 6 years old. It’s been a lot of fun to see these guys get better.”

Steven Newell from Dallas pinned Marc Avila from Montrose in 1:45 at 182 pounds.

Lake-Lehman’s T.J. Meehan lost to Hazleton Area’s Shane Noonan in 3:10 at 220.

Bob Long from Lake-Lehman was also selected, but did not have an opponent available at his weight.

Hanover Area coach Mike Griffith organized the event.
