DALLAS — Dallas High School LifeSmarts team brought home its third national championship trophy this year.

Senior Matt Metzloff and his LifeSmarts teammates found it hard to find a spot to put their xhampionship trophy in the school’s display case because the case is full of team accolades since 2003.

LifeSmarts is a nationally recognized school club that educates students in areas such as consumer rights, cyber security, health and wellness and more in trivia-style competitions, said Dallas High School teacher and LifeSmarts coach Kevin West.

“We won first place,” in the national competition held in California in April, Metzloff, the team captain said. “This stuff will be useful later in life.”

The teammates also placed in the following individual heats:

• Metzloff won first place in the individual environmental competition.

• Junior Raymond Perez placed first in the Health and Safety heat.

• Junior Caleb Sweitzer earned fifth place in the personal finance category.

• Sophomore Hannah Wolfe achieved second place in consumer rights and responsibility.

Vidhan Dhol, a freshman, did not place in the individual technology competition but said he would be ready for next year.

“I was very nervous at first,” Dhol said about the national competition. “It was a team effort.”

The club has up to 20 members who practice answering questions such as what does the acronym FDA mean, West said.

During the school year, students practice two to three hours a day for five days a week for accuracy and speed, West said.

A series of online timed questionnaires pit students against others locally and regionally, West said.

A state-level online competition, which consists of 100 questions, determines which school will advance to the national level, West said.

“It is timed,” Metzloff said. “The faster you answer correctly, the more points you earn.”

The top five students are chosen to participate in the national competitions, West added.

“We competed against (a school from) Kansas in the semi-finals and Hawaii in the finals,” Metzloff said.

Sweitzer and Wolfe said they befriended students from Oklahoma and other states.

“Wisconsin was our sister state, Wolfe said, adding contest officials chose the state at random.

The students’ experience would not be possible if it weren’t for the support of the school board, community and the Dallas Foundation, West said.

“The Dallas Foundation gave thousands of dollars (to the LifeSmarts Team) over the years,” West said.

The team will rest over the summer before gearing up for another season in the fall.

The 2019 LifeSmarts National Competition is scheduled to be held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
