Brady Williams led Misericordia University to what was arguably the most impressive football victory in school history Saturday.

On Sunday, the junior quarterback was rewarded by being named Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Misericordia upset Widener University, 36-35, when Williams ran for a touchdown with four seconds left then hit Sam Gillison with a pass for the winning two-point conversion.

The upset bid appeared to have slipped away when Widener scored the last of its three straight touchdowns to rally from a 14-point deficit and move in front, 35-28, with 5:04 to play.

Williams then engineered an 11-play, 79-yard drive that resulted in his 1-yard touchdown. When the Cougars decided to go for the win, Williams had to avoid a sack before releasing the pass which Gillison pulled in with a diving catch in the back, left corner of the end zone.

The game was the MAC opener for each team.

Misericordia (1-1 overall) had been picked ninth out of 10 MAC teams in a preseason poll of conference coaches. Widener, traditionally one of the MAC’s top teams, had been regarded as a potential title contender and was picked third overall.

Williams helped create the unexpected result by both running and passing for more than 100 yards. He rushed for a team-high 122 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 143 yards and another score.

Isiah Williams caught the Brady Williams touchdown pass, Jeremy Bass recovered a teammate’s fumble in the end zone and returned an interception for the other Misericordia scores.

David Cromwell picked up 67 yards on 14 carries and Jamal Dallas had 65 on 18 carries.

Widener fell to 0-3.

Misericordia will play at Wilkes Saturday at 1 p.m. in another MAC game.
