Massive wrestling tournaments and small four-team gatherings in basketball, each split over two days, are a stable of the break between Christmas and New Year’s for high school sports teams.

The 39th annual Tunkhannock Kiwanis Wrestling Tournament could see the host Tigers fighting for their second title in three seasons.

The tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, beginning at 11 a.m., and Thursday, with action starting at 10 a.m.

Tunkhannock placed third out of 26 teams last year and returns all four of its tournament finalists from that effort.

Tom Traver is back after winning the title at 132 pounds. Dave Evans (106), David Gavek (113) and Sam Rice (195) all finished second.

Both Dallas and Lake-Lehman are headed back to the Buckskin Classic Friday and Saturday at Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster.

Dallas finished 14th and Lake-Lehman was 18th out of 26 teams last season.

Steve Newell is the top returning Dallas wrestler from that tournament after placing fourth at 160 pounds in 2016.

Lake-Lehman’s Kaleb Konigus was eighth at 285.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lake-Lehman and Dallas are both in holiday tournaments.

The Black Knights play the host team Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament, which concludes Thursday.

Dallas is headed to the Freedom Tournament in Bethlehem Thursday and Friday.

The Mountaineers lost close games to Southern Lehigh and host Bethlehem Freedom in last year’s tournament.
