Dallas was competitive in a difficult test in its boys volleyball debut under new coach Mike Shmakov.

The Mountaineers went on the road Tuesday and lost, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18, at Wyoming Valley West.

The Spartans went 9-3 in the Wyoming Valley Conference a year ago.

Shmakov, a former Coughlin player, took over a Dallas team that was 6-6 last season.

Jared Thompson, a second-team WVC conference all-star selection by coaches last season, led the Mountaineers with eight points. Corbin Thompson, who is back after receiving honorable mention on the all-star team, had eight digs and six points.

Lake-Lehman 0

Trek Brodginski’s 14 service aces helped Hanover Area defeat host Lake-Lehman, 25-12, 25-11, 25-17.

Sam Price had 10 service points and six digs to lead the Black Knights. Justin Lansberry and Jonathan Raspen had 12 assists each.

The match was the first for Lake-Lehman under new coach Chris Kukosky.

Dallas 1

Holy Redeemer swept doubles while winning a season opener that matched two of the top four teams in the WVC from a year ago.

Dallas suffered heavy graduation losses from a team that was second in the conference last year. The Mountaineers got their only win at second singles where John Toussaint won in straight sets.

The Royals tied Tunkhannock for third in the WVC in 2016.

Wyoming Valley West 2

Avery Newhart rallied from a first-set loss to pull out a three-set win at second singles and lift the Tigers over the Spartans in another WVC opener.

Lucas Straley won at first singles while Alex Keiser-Jared Fernandez won at second doubles for the Tigers.

The Spartans won two of the three matches that went to a third set.
