WILKES-BARRE — Once Wyoming Area’s season ended about a month ago, senior Sam Greenfield turned his focus to his spring sport — lacrosse.

But Monday night, he showed he still can plays some basketball despite the layoff.

Greenfield recorded a double-double — 17 points and 10 rebounds — as the Wyoming Valley Conference defeated the Lackawanna League 115-91 in the inaugural Battle of the Valley All-Star Classic before about 400 spectators at Wilkes University.

The game used NCAA rules with 20-minute halves and a 30-second shot clock, although the latter was mostly irrelevant. Neither teams was shy at chucking up shots and neither came close to a shot-clock violation.

The WVC led wire-to-wire, with Greenfield opening the game with a 3-pointer.

“Honestly, I haven’t been on the court that much,” Greenfield said. “We had a couple practices with this team, but aside from that I’ve been playing lacrosse every day. I haven’t had much time on the court, but I can still shoot.”

Plenty of WVC players proved that. Hazleton Area’s Jeff Planutis, whose season ended Saturday in a 6A state semifinal loss, paced the team with 20 points. Holy Redeemer’s Joey Judge had 14 and Hazleton Area’s Joe Grula added 13.

Three other WVC players — Dallas’ Alex Charlton, Berwick’s Damon Beckhorn and Wyoming Valley West’s Draig Ruff — netted 11 each. Ruff also had eight rebounds. Scranton Prep’s Wes Simons led Lackawanna with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Although the game was billed as a matchup of seniors from the two leagues which make up District 2, Charlton viewed it as just another chance to play some basketball.

“I don’t really pay attention to that stuff too much,” Charlton said. “It was just fun to go out and complete and let go. It was awesome.”

The WVC certainly had the depth and size advantage and those two factors started to show in the waning minutes of the first half.

Greenfield tossed in a rebound and scored on a baseline drive as the WVC went on a 7-0 run to take a 39-28 lead with five minutes until intermission. Charlton capped the burst with a dunk off a pass from Samec. Lackawanna closed within 49-41 by halftime, but the WVC opened the second half with another 7-0 run.

Midway through the second half, the WVC was in complete control with an 83-62 lead. A 9-0 run, led by Planutis, turned a competitive ame into a rout.

For many of the WVC players, there is another game next week — the Dr. George Moses Senior All-Star Classic on Feb. 6 at Holy Redeemer High School.
