Ten swimmers and four relays from the Wyoming Valley Conference received at-large bids to the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships following their performances at the District 2 meet this weekend.

PIAA officials released the 16 time qualifiers per event Sunday for the state championships held March 15-18 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

The swimmers will join the automatic qualifiers. District champions in Class 3A and Class 2A boys received a golden ticket to PIAAs. The top two finishers in Class 2A girls claimed qualifying spots.

After swimming a time faster than the previous district record but falling short for a gold medal, Wyoming Valley West’s Logan Fluegel earned a spot to Class 3A states in the 100 butterfly. His time of 51.59 seconds was the sixth-best among the time qualifiers.

District champion Wyoming Seminary will have Yonah Wasik and Garrett Pall join their teammates in Lewisburg. Wasik qualified in both the 200 IM and 100 back. Garrett Pall will compete in the 100 butterfly.

Berwick’s Chris Michael (100 breast) and Tunkhannock’s Alex Bushre (50 free) also had their seasons extended.

After not winning any races at districts, the Dallas boys secured five at-large bids from three individual and two relay performances. Mikhail Krochta will swim in the 200 IM and 100 back. Troy Reinert’s time in the 100 butterfly ensured him a spot at states. Both the Mountaineers’ 200 medley and 400 free relays punched their ticket.

In spite of coming third at the district championships, the Wyoming Seminary girls will have nine competing spots at states. In addition to the four that already earned automatics qualifications for finishing first or second, the WVC champions will feature Haley Thier in both the 100 butterfly and 100 back. April Kupsky qualified in the 200 IM. Both the Blue Knights’ 200 medley and 200 free relays secured a spot.

Dallas’ Melissa Leonard makes her first states appearance in the 200 free. The Mountaineers’ 200 free relay will also suit up next week.

No WVC Class 3A girls swimmers were time qualifiers.

Wyoming Seminary is seeded first in two events in the boys’ psych sheets. Marcos Rico is the top spot in the 100 breast, and the Blue Knights swam the fastest time in the 200 medley relay.
